Argentina

This photography experience takes you front and backstage at an iconic tango show in the San Telmo district of Buenos Aires. Hosted by a professional photographer, the activity starts with a 30-minute introductory talk in a San Telmo cafe where you'll learn about the camera settings and techniques required for shooting moving objects in low light. After this, you will walk a short distance to the theater where the rest of the evening plays out over photography, art, dining, and conversation.

Once seated at a premium table with a clear view of the stage, you will photograph the dancers and orchestra without obstructions. Dinner is served during the show, while Bernardo mentors you through the photography and shares cultural insights into tango culture. At a convenient moment, you will access the backstage area for the opportunity to meet and photograph the tango dancers while they prepare their make-up and costumes ahead the show.

This rare-access experience puts an immersive twist on the typical Buenos Aires tango show. Hosted by a globally published photographer from Buenos Aires, you will view this splendid performance from the perspective of an artist. The experience includes a workshop in photography, addressing how to configure your camera, composition, and techniques for shooting dancers. This enables you to capture incredible photographs during the show itself which takes place in a traditional tango house in the bohemian neighbourhood of San Telmo. Mexico

This cooking workshop takes place in a scenic Indigenous Zapotec town and introduces you to local ingredients and techniques specific to regional tamale-making. You'll be guided by a member of a Zapotec women’s collective that supports local women and their community, along with your guide, who will assist with organization and translation.

During the workshop, you'll get hands-on experience with the ingredients and methods used by the women in this collective to create handmade tamales. Women Supporting Women is a collective founded in the 1990s by Indigenous Zapotec women—many of whom were widowed, single mothers, or unmarried, circumstances that were socially frowned upon at the time. In addition to cooking, the group also weaves wool rugs, producing handcrafted pieces sold in their workshop.

You'll leave with a deeper appreciation for Zapotec cooking traditions and a richer understanding of the historical and contemporary challenges facing this community.

Taking place in a social impact-oriented space, this workshop is located in a traditional Zapotec village relatively close to Oaxaca de Juárez. It not only offers insight into local ingredients and cooking techniques but also supports the core mission of this women-run project, which helps local women and their broader community.

Joined by a host with a long-standing relationship with the organization, you’ll be welcomed into this meaningful space and invited to learn more about local culture and food traditions from a Zapotec perspective.

Proceeds from this experience go toward maintaining the space itself—a safe, communal hub where widows, single mothers, and unmarried women can sell their handmade textiles, host workshops, and take part in personal development courses focused on finance, self-care, and marketing skills.

For João, the true essence of the Algarve lies in its sensory landscape and the stories attached to it.
“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. Granada's Jewish and Gypsy neighborhoods, the Realejo and Sacromonte districts, are two of the most culturally significant and historically rich areas of the city. Both neighborhoods offer a unique look into the diverse heritage that shaped Granada, with the Realejo reflecting the city’s Sephardic Jewish history, and Sacromonte being the heart of Granada’s Gypsy (Roma) culture and the birthplace of the passionate Zambra flamenco style.

Highlights of Realejo (Jewish Quarter):

1. Historical Streets: The Realejo neighborhood, once known as Garnata al-Yahud, was the vibrant Jewish quarter of Granada before the 1492 expulsion of Jews from Spain. Its narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses retain much of their medieval charm, making it a fascinating area to explore.

2. Carmen de los Mártires: One of the most beautiful Carmen-style gardens in Granada, offering peaceful surroundings and stunning views of the Alhambra and the city. 

3. Campo del Príncipe: This central square is the neighborhood’s heart, surrounded by traditional taverns where locals gather. It’s an excellent place to enjoy tapas.

Highlights of Sacromonte (Gypsy Quarter):

1. Cuevas (Caves) of Sacromonte: The cave houses of Sacromonte, dug into the hillside, are the hallmark of this Gypsy neighborhood. Many of these caves are still inhabited and have been converted into flamenco tablaos, where visitors can experience the raw passion of Zambra.

2. Sacromonte Abbey: Perched on the hillside, this abbey offers a glimpse into both religious and cultural history. The abbey complex includes underground caves where early Christians were said to have worshipped, as well as breathtaking views over Granada and the Alhambra.

At Riisitunturi National Park, ancient trees enveloped in layers of sticky snow (called ‘tykky’ in Finnish) assume fantastical shapes of monsters, ghosts, birds and families of snow people. On days like this, when sunrise and sunset happen within a two-hour window, backgrounds are brushed in pinks and yellows, and foregrounds etched with tracks of reindeer, dogs and humans. 

Snow is something more than frozen water to the Sami people. It’s a way of expressing the basis of their existence.

Best time to visit? Late December to March. Getting there from Rovaniemi takes more than 2 hours each way, but the trails are easy - we did a 4 km.

With 25+ years of crafting Jamaican traditional meals, Chef Chris gained fame when Anthony Bourdain showcased his skills on "Parts Unknown" in 2014. 

From the moment we stepped into the Cook Shop, all our senses were engaged. The local scenes, the staff busy with their preparation and the aromas from the kitchen. Then we gathered on his rooftop deck overlooking James Bond Beach in the distance – a lovely backdrop to our culinary adventure - to eat together. We savored the dishes we helped create, and Chef Chris even shared a packet of his secret curry powder for us to take home.

I am never going to climb a sand dune again. I say that vehemently (many times) as I climb Dune 45.

After 50 long, sand-filled minutes taken to trudge up, here are the lessons learned: Take slow steps. Barefoot works best. One step forward will indeed feel like two steps backward. Don’t stop. Don’t get disheartened if a sprightly guide whizzes past you in an attempt to beat his own 10 minute record. When you have reached the peak and admired the view, scream a joyful “whee-eee” and slide down the side of the dune, marveling at the roaring sound of the minor avalanche that you will create. 

Ok, can we do that again? 

Nearby is Dead Vlei / Sossusvlei. It’s a kaleidoscope of yellow and orange sands and the white of the stunning vlei. Meanwhile, the oryx are vying with each other to position themselves strategically into my shots. They seem to have no issues with climbing dunes. Then again, I don’t see them doing any joyful slides down.

Stintino, a small fishing village in northwest Sardinia, is home to La Pelosa Beach, often regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. Visitor Tip: Plan to spend half a day to a full day at La Pelosa Beach. Due to its popularity, access is limited during peak months, and visitors must book online and bring a beach mat to protect the delicate sand. Arrive early to secure your spot, especially in summer.

Stintino & La Pelosa Beach

Iceland

This being a ‘chill trip’, we did not want to hike 10 hours on a glacier. Instead we trek on the Vatnajokull glacier looking for ice caves with wind on our face and ice under our feet.

Earlier, we woke up at 7 and drive in cold and windy January to Skaftafell National Park to meet Einar, our guide. 

This cave... like others ... started forming In August but you are never sure it will be stable to explore till later. In September, the loose ceiling collapsed  and this brilliant cave was formed.

These fragile and transitory structure require constant maintenance from falling rock and melting icicles. Einer enters the cave and spots a few boulders on the roof. He removes them to prevent harm to the cave and us. 

As we move around, the cave looks different as our viewing angle and the sunlight outside changes.

We are in complete awe ... and hungry. Luckily a steaming meal of lamb and potatoes is close by.

Ice Caving

Stepping into Piazza San Marco, with the majestic Basilica at its eastern end, is unforgettable. Napoleon described it as 'the finest drawing room in Europe'. 5 top reasons to visit:
 
1: Historical Evolution: In the Piazza, imagine, Venice in the 9th century, as St. Mark's Square was first established. It wasn't until the 12th century that it expanded to its current size under Doge Sebastiano Ziani. 5: The Campanile and Clocktower: As you explore the square, don't miss the Campanile, the towering bell tower, and the St. Mark's Clocktower. The queue to climb up is usually long, but offers a magnificent view.
