Andrea — an anthropologist and longtime resident of Coyoacán with family roots in Guerrero — begins with a brief walk near her studio in a neighborhood shaped by the encounter of colonial and Indigenous cultures — the roots from which mezcal emerged.

Back at her studio, you’ll taste three distinct mezcals from Guerrero, each carefully selected by Andrea. As you sip, she shares the cultural context behind each variety — from the agave species to traditional distillation methods. You’ll learn how to “kiss” the mezcal, as Spanish speakers say — a slow, attentive tasting style that reveals each glass’s unique character. Andrea's own work in mezcal emerged from an extensive family history, where numerous memories and experiences have been intrinsically linked to the enjoyment of this spirit, always accompanied by good food and music. Since 2010, Andrea has been an integral part of the new narrative being woven around mezcal from Guerrero, actively contributing to its recognition and appreciation both nationally and internationally.

This material is essential to the history of Oaxaca—many of the region’s structures are built from it. During colonial times, the area was briefly renamed Villa de Antequera because the stone’s soft green tones reminded settlers of that Spanish city.

You’ll visit a local cantera mine and family-run workshops to see their creative process firsthand. The experience also includes a homemade meal with the family matriarch. The set menu is accompanied by non-alcoholic drinks and a cup of locally made mezcal.

Tango to Andes in Argentina

7 days in Argentina: Buenos Aires to Mendoza with tango nights, wine, mate and asado in the Andes.

The riad sends a donkey called Couscous to meet us and pick up the luggage; the taxi will only go so far into the medina. 

As our merry procession winds through the narrow, confusing alleyways, we panic slightly. No problem, says a djelleba-clad staff member, you’ll have a map and cell phone to call if you’re lost. But he graciously accompanies us to our dinner booking and explains how we should get back to the riad. We leave invisible bread crumbs along the way – kebab shop, sweets stall, bakery etc. 

After a long meal, at 11:30 pm, the souks have closed, the streets look very different, and our bread crumbs have obviously gone to bed. It takes two wrong turns and much poring over the map before we find our way back. Our sense of adventure is fully piqued. 

Inside, the restored riad is palatial, with courtyards, heated pool, tiled terraces and stylish artwork. Breakfast is whenever you want, and wherever, says the charming Afaf. 

Shall we move in permanently, we wonder.

Riad Living

This Shinto shrine has a very mystical quality, especially when it’s pitch dark, with no people around. Perfect for long 20-second exposures to capture the light and the shadows. Or “light painting” with a flashlight. 

That’s me brandishing a lightsaber and painting with it  Now imagine this as a Star Wars location for a fight scene. 

In between sets of Torii Gates, there are family shrines which are even more special, complete with miniature Torii, candlesticks and kitsune.

Street Art in Psiri

Philippines

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night.
