A short guided hike of roughly two hours will take you to a series of caves featuring rustic paintings and traces of human habitation dating back over 10,000 years. They depict the early domestication period of the Zapotec people, when their ancestors first settled here as hunter-gatherers. These caverns are part of a larger network of over 200 caves in Yagul, where the earliest remnants of domesticated corn—a tiny and now obsolete variety known as teocintle—were discovered. This entire area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

As these caves are protected and the town operates under Indigenous law, it’s required that we travel with a local guide provided by the pueblo’s government office.

After the hike, we’ll continue the corn theme with lunch at a local restaurant, sampling one of the most iconic corn-based dishes in Oaxaca: the tlayuda. We’ll share a variety of styles, along with a refreshing non-alcoholic agua fresca.

This hike is a chance to appreciate the splendor of the Oaxacan countryside and gain insight into the earliest Zapotec people who settled in this land. Your host, a long-time Oaxaca resident with strong connections to this community, will arrange the hike with a guide from the local government office to ensure the experience complies with Indigenous law for this protected area. Participants can specify whether they would like the tour in English or Spanish. This offers unmatched insight into the history and ecology of the region.

You’ll then explore the magic of corn firsthand by trying one of Oaxaca’s most iconic delicacies—the tlayuda. Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Japan

This exploration of three lesser-known, evocative temple gardens in Kyoto offers a deep understanding of Japanese dry landscape design — where every stone, every line of raked gravel, carries meaning. Led by certified garden designer and author Ayumi Ikushima, the experience opens a thoughtful path into the philosophy and form of Zen gardens.

You’ll begin at the Crane and Turtle Garden where Ayumi introduces the foundational principles of Japanese garden design: symbolism, placement, interplay between nature and intention. 

A short walk takes you to a second temple where the garden reflects nature in miniature — a landscape composed to invite observation. You’ll learn to see and photograph the space mindfully.

Your final stop is a larger temple with a modern take on the tradition. A resident monk leads a meditation in view of the garden, offering how stillness and landscape are meant to interact. Then, you'll sit with Ayumi over tea and seasonal sweets to reflect and ask questions.

Many of Kyoto’s most famous temples now draw crowds so dense they verge on the tourist-trap, where authenticity gives way to speed and spectacle. This experience instead leads you through contemplative spaces where the spirit of the garden remains intact. Your exploration begins at San Niccolò Tower, where Elena welcomes you at the historic Porta San Niccolò. From here, you ascend gently toward Piazzale Michelangelo, taking in sweeping views of Florence and the Arno. Chile

This full-day experience immerses you in the Atacama's most dramatic scenery: its geysers, high-altitude wetlands, and volcanic highlands. Unlike most tours to El Tatio (Los Géisers del Tatio) which depart before dawn, Valeria's experience takes place once the crowds have thinned and the late-morning light draws out the remarkable hues of the minerals. Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish.
