Your journey begins in Chioggia aboard a topa — a traditional flat-bottomed boat restored by your host, Damiano. Known as “Little Venice,” Chioggia has long lived in the shadow of its famous neighbor — but with its own traditions and tempo. As you glide down Canal Vena and under low bridges, daily life in the lagoon unfolds from a water-level view: fishermen docking, laundry hanging above the canals, neighbors chatting across boats. From Chioggia, the topa crosses open water toward Pellestrina. Mussel farms stretch out across the lagoon; wooden stilt houses rise above the tide. The return route traces slower canals with wide lagoon views.

Chile

This full-day bird watching excursion is led by a naturalist guide and conservationist who surveys the local population of avifauna and knows all the best spots to encounter resident and migratory species. After leaving San Pedro, you first drive south towards Jere Canyon (Quebrada de Jere) where tamarugo conebills, oasis hummingbirds, white-winged doves, and plain-mantled tit-spinetails dwell. There are brief stops along the way in oases frequented by birds. The morning concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat's Chaxa Lagoon, where you will encounter three of the world's six flamingo species.

Upon return to San Pedro, you'll enjoy a relaxed lunch with Valeria in a local restaurant before driving north to highland canyons and wetlands. At the Machuca, Putana and Jauna wetlands, you will scout for the diademed sandpiper plover: any birder's crown jewel in the Altiplano. Vicuñas and vizcachas are usually spotted, and there is always the hope of spying Andean cats and culpeo foxes.

Valeria Heindl is a passionate naturalist and conservationist who has resided in San Pedro de Atacama for over a decade.  “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. Figueres, Spain, is home to the world-famous Dalí Theatre-Museum (Teatre-Museu Dalí), an extraordinary tribute to the life and work of surrealist master Salvador Dalí. Designed by Dalí himself on the site of his hometown’s former theater, this immersive museum is as much a surrealist masterpiece as the art inside it. With its giant eggs on the roof, a Mae West room, and mind-bending installations, the museum offers visitors an unforgettable dive into Dalí’s eccentric and imaginative world.

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Benagil Cave, located near the small fishing village of Benagil on the southern coast of Portugal, is one of the Algarve's most breathtaking natural attractions. This spectacular sea cave, renowned for its unique formation and stunning natural light, is accessible only by water, making it a thrilling destination for visitors. Here are the top highlights:

The top of the elevator offers spectacular views of the city and the sea, making it a must-visit spot for photographers and history lovers alike.
1. This quaint street boasts cobblestone paths and colorful facades that exude old-world charm.
2. It is named after the famous Turkish-Jewish singer and artist, Dario Moreno, adding cultural significance to the area.
3. The historic Asansör, built in 1907, is an iconic elevator that connects two levels of the city.

5. The cafes at the top provide a delightful spot to enjoy a drink with stunning cityscapes as a backdrop.
