What is this?
This is an expertly executed combination of Madrid's Prado and Reina Sofía museums connected by a walk of UNESCO-listed Paisaje de la Luz with tapas in Barrio de las Letras: ~2.5 hours in the Prado, an hour for tapas, and 1.5 hours in the Reina Sofía.
The Prado holds thousands of paintings across three floors. Ángel or Mario curate a route that emphasises the greats: Bosch, Titian, Velázquez, Goya — and add on other interesting works you would miss without an art historian to guide you. At Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights, the commentary on that triptych alone sets the tone for the rest of the tour. The narration of Spain's history through paint as if it were happening here and now: kings great and despised, a procession of Habsburg princesses, and Madrid's defiant stand against Napoleon's troops in Goya's Third of May.
After tapas, the Reina Sofía delivers Picasso's Guernica, a devastating witness to the Spanish Civil War, as well as contemporary masterpieces by Miró and Dalí.
What makes this unique?
Visiting both Prado and Reina Sofía museums in a day could be overwhelming, and hard to organize. Ángel or Mario make it work by focusing on works that they weave into the greatest stories about Spain's history told through art.
Both are art history professors and culture teachers, who’ve spent their careers translating Spain's knotty art history into something vivid and human. They connect the dots and share the stories. You don't just look at Guernica; you understand its importance in the story of the Civil War. You don't admire Velázquez from a distance; you become an instant student of his genius. The politics, the rivalries, the private lives behind each canvas, told with real detail, humor and infectious enthusiasm make the experience intimate, personalized, and genuinely fun.
The walk between the museums includes tapas at one or two tabernas depending on the day and your appetite. These are places with real color and character in the writers' quarter (Barrio de las Letras).
What is the profile of the host?
Ángel González is an art historian, professor, and devoted Madrileño with 23 years of teaching experience across history, culture, art, and architecture. He discovered his true calling not in grading students but sharing Spain's stories with curious people through his areas of expertise. Warm, witty, and deeply knowledgeable, Ángel's humor infuses charm into every conversation, whether unraveling Spanish culture or discussing art masterpieces.
Mario Pérez is a genuine Madrileño. With over two decades of guiding experience and degrees in History and Art History, Mario is a seasoned traveler who has immersed in diverse cultures. He carries the same approach as Ángel in his tours — curation, storytelling, and the belief that a great tour should leave you understanding a country and its culture. He believes travel is the ultimate teacher, capable of transforming lives and creating a better world.
What to bring?
Comfortable walking shoes — this is a five-hour tour across two large museums and the streets between them.
A bottle of water is advisable. Weather-appropriate clothing (Madrid can be hot in summer, chilly in winter).
Both museums require bags to be checked at the entrance, so travel light.
No photography in the Prado; photos are fine at the Reina Sofía, except possibly in front of Guernica.
Where is this located?
Where will we meet?
You'll meet Ángel or Mario beside the Goya statue outside the Prado's Puerta de Goya, on Calle Ruiz de Alarcón directly across from the Ritz Hotel. It's a short walk from most central Madrid hotels. If you're coming by Metro, Banco de España (Line 2) is closest, about a 5-minute walk.
