What is this?

Spend a full day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage town of Sintra and nearby Queluz, where royal palaces and Romantic gardens meet. With private transport from your hotel, you'll begin at Quinta da Regaleira, a former private estate featuring grottoes and underground passages amid a landscape brimming with symbolism. As you explore its winding paths, including the Initiation Well, you'll decipher the meaning behind its iconic features. From there, you'll continue into the historic center of Sintra to visit the Sintra National Palace, Portugal’s oldest continuously inhabited royal residence. Inside, you'll find medieval halls, layered with Moorish influences and Renaissance details. After the visit, you'll pause for lunch in the town center, with time to enjoy local dishes and traditional pastries. The day concludes at Palácio de Queluz, an 18th-century royal residence known for its refined interiors and formal gardens, offering a more intimate perspective on courtly life.

What makes this unique?

This experience brings together three distinct sites that reveal different expressions of Portuguese royal life and imagination across time. Rather than focusing only on Sintra’s most visited landmarks, it combines the symbolic landscape of Quinta da Regaleira, the historical tales of the Sintra National Palace, and the refined grandeur of Palácio de Queluz, one of Portugal’s least-visited royal residences. Together, they offer a broader understanding of how power and art shaped the country over the centuries and the characters who influenced it. Accompanied by an art historian who has worked in several of Portugal’s national palaces, you benefit from expert insight into why Sintra has long inspired writers, artists, and monarchs, how its misty landscape became an ideal setting for Romantic experimentation, and why Queluz is often compared to Versailles. With door-to-door transportation, you’re free to focus entirely on the sites in front of you without needing to rush through them.

What is the profile of the host?

Estela is an art historian with a master’s degree in Museology and two decades of experience working in national palaces and major international museums. Born and raised in Lisbon, she began her career in Portugal at sites such as the Palácio de Queluz before spending several years in London at institutions including Buckingham Palace and the National Portrait Gallery. Through close observation and context, she helps you understand why these palaces were created and how they reflect the ambitions, beliefs, and imagination of their time.
