You drive to L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, surrounded by a moat of flowing water. Renowned for its brocantes - over 300 antique dealers trading year-round - it draws collectors, designers, and food lovers. Much more than a flea market, professional dealers tastefully set out chandeliers, linens, paintings, furniture and fragments of domestic history along canal-side streets. The town dates to the 12th century, when fishermen built huts on stilts above marshland. By the 18th century, canals lined with giant water wheels powered silk factories and paper mills. 

Midday, you pause for lunch, then continue to Avignon, UNESCO World Heritage city and capital of the Vaucluse. Within its medieval walls, streets narrow beneath pale stone façades and open onto shaded squares. The Palais des Papes rises above the rooftops. You explore the historic center, old streets such as Rue des Teinturiers, the cathedral, and historic gardens overlooking Rhône Valley, the Vaucluse and the Luberon before returning.

From Venice to Burano, it's a 20-25 minute ride by private water taxi (can be booked via your hotel) or a 45 minute ride on the public vaporetto (runs from 5 AM onwards, check exact time with hotel).

You'll discover the flora and fauna of the Venetian lagoon by following unique itineraries known only to local fishermen, far from the typical tourist routes. Traditionally used to decorate manuscripts, textiles, and ceramics, Ebru has been cherished in Turkey since the Ottoman era, blending artistic expression with meditative practice.

Set in a tranquil Istanbul gallery, this hands-on session begins with an introduction to Ebru’s rich history and cultural significance. You’ll observe a live demonstration by a master artist, learning the techniques of working with fabric—how to prepare the base, control the pigments, and create balanced, flowing designs. Using natural earth pigments, you’ll craft a vibrant scarf, watching colors float, swirl, and settle into intricate shapes before being transferred onto fabric. By the end of the session, you’ll take home a unique wearable piece of Turkish heritage.

Explore two of Florence’s most iconic churches on a journey through painting, sculpture, and architecture that reveals how two great preaching orders shaped the city’s spiritual and artistic legacy.

Santa Croce, the Franciscan basilica, houses masterpieces by Cimabue, Giotto, Donatello, Brunelleschi and others, and holds the tombs of Galileo, Michelangelo, and Machiavelli. Its vast spaces and narrative frescoes reflect a humble, human-focused approach to faith.

After a relaxing break with a sandwich and a glass of wine, we’ll cross the heart of Florence to reach Santa Maria Novella. This Dominican church is a treasure of early Renaissance art, featuring works by Giotto, Brunelleschi, and Ghirlandaio. Capileira is known for its handmade woven textiles, or jarapas, produced in small family workshops that carry on an old Alpujarran craft tradition. This is where the tour starts and ends. Burano is a charming and colorful island in the Venetian Lagoon, known for its brightly painted houses and long-standing tradition of lace-making. Located about 7 kilometers from Venice, a 25 minute water taxi (to be arranged via your Venice hotel) or a 40-minute vaporetto (water bus) ride can transport you to this picturesque locale from Venice. Historically, Burano was a fishing village, and this heritage is evident in its culture and cuisine, with seafood being a prominent feature in local dishes.  You can also stay overnight at Venissa or Casa Burano. It's amazing to wake up early on the island before the tourists get here and wander around.

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. So I pick up my camera instead and wander through Boston’s most historic neighborhood to celebrate its annual Halloween tradition.
