What is this?
This 6 km guided hike crosses the undisturbed landscapes of Guadiana Valley Natural Park in southeast Portugal — the heart of the Iberian lynx's recovery, an important wildlife landscape. Pedro takes you on public paths through scrubland, open holm oak groves, rolling pastures. The Guadiana River runs through the territory.
This is not a wildlife-spotting hike. As Pedro puts it, lynxes are not trees — observing a wild animal, even where it is abundant, always carries a margin of uncertainty. The walk is built around experiencing the landscape that sustains the lynx. You learn to identify tracks, recognize habitats, and understand the balance that exists in this terrain that has made this corner of the Alentejo one of the few places where the Iberian lynx has come back from near-extinction.
The hike offers excellent opportunities for photography, with wide horizons, changing light, and a diversity of flora and fauna. You conclude with local snacks in a small traditional tavern.
What makes this unique?
Guadiana Valley has an unusual arrangement that has made the lynx's return possible. This is a rare opportunity to observe this working landscape where conservation and traditional hunting coexist — the area is a cinegética, a managed hunting zone that plays a role in maintaining ecological balance, the hunters here are part of why the rabbits thrive which is essential for the lynx to survive.
Pedro has been observing this terrain for decades — first as a beekeeper, then as a guide — and knows its rhythms in a way few people do. He guides you through terrain with little human presence, offering access to landscapes that remain largely untouched.
While sightings of the lynx are rare, this very uncertainty adds to the authenticity of the experience, encouraging observation, patience, attentiveness to the environment. By the end, the lynx may or may not have appeared. But you'll understand the country it lives in, and the unusual coalition of people and practices that brought it back.
