What is this?

This hiking experience is through the high country of Montesinho, in Trás-os-Montes, between 1,200-1,500 meters of altitude, along the border between Portugal and Spain. The route follows unmarked trails through a landscape of gentle hills, vast horizons, and shrubby vegetation broken by small birch groves and enormous granite blocks balanced in place by glacial time. You travel by 4x4 to the trailhead, then walk approximately 5 kilometers at a medium-low difficulty — unhurried, with stops to listen, look, and take in the silence. Along the way you pass stone border markers — some built, some carved into granite outcrops — placed to demarcate one of the world's oldest international borders, first defined in 1297. The landscape changes with the season. In April, the hills are covered in flowers. In autumn, mist drifts low over the heath. In winter, snow sometimes covers everything. The hike ends with lunch at a mountain village restaurant, featuring traditional Trás-os-Montes cuisine.

What makes this unique?

The high country of Montesinho is one of the most genuinely remote stretches of mountain in southern Europe — a landscape where you see scattered stone border markers and wind turbines, and hear the sounds of wind and water, or the call of a circling eagle. At this elevation, the view is a "sea" of shrubby vegetation, birch groves, and granite outcrops that have been left almost entirely to themselves. Together with adjacent Spanish protected areas, Montesinho forms part of the Meseta Ibérica Transboundary Biosphere Reserve. The area is crossed by the Iberian wolf and its main wild prey — wild boar, red deer, roe deer — though sightings are rare. You may see their tracks, hear stories from António about recent sightings, and walk through the same country they cross at night. António has lived inside Montesinho since 2010 and knows these trails well - across seasons and weather conditions. The hike runs year-round because António can customize the route based on the day's conditions.

What is the profile of the host?

António Sá is a freelance photographer and journalist, working across travel, ethnography and nature with hundreds of articles published in the Portuguese and international press. His assignments have taken him to Borneo, Alaska, Iceland, Mongolia, China, Namibia, and across Portugal. In 2007 he led the National Geographic Channel project Portugal in Focus, a documentary on Portugal's UNESCO World Heritage sites. António also teaches photography workshops and leads photo tours.  Since 2010 António has lived in Lagomar, inside Parque Natural de Montesinho. He is a naturalist whose deep knowledge of the region's landscapes, ecology, and human communities has built relationships that give visitors access to places and people most travelers never reach on their own. From here, he guides visitors through the Trás-os-Montes region at the rhythm of the seasons — work he treats less as commerce than as a way to share a place he loves.

What to bring?

Wear clothing suitable for the season — Montesinho's high country can change weather quickly, and conditions at 1,200-1,500 m elevation are typically cooler and windier than lower in the park. Hiking boots are essential; the trails are unmarked and the terrain is uneven. Bring a bottle of water.

Where is this located?
