What is this?

This full-day photography tour moves through the built heritage and vernacular architecture of Trás-os-Montes — from the 12th-century walls of Bragança Citadel down to the small dovecotes, watermills, and stone houses that have shaped the region's villages for centuries. You travel by 4x4 with António, working with morning and late-afternoon light to capture buildings from different eras. The route includes the medieval castle and walled citadel of Bragança and the Romanesque Domus Municipalis. From there, you move into the surrounding countryside: medieval bridges and small churches in landscapes slowly reclaimed by nature, the distinctive horseshoe-shaped pombais (traditional dovecotes) dotting the Trás-os-Montes hills, and watermills hidden on the banks of mountain rivers. You'll see a working mountain village made of schist and granite houses, where the medieval rural organization remains largely intact, and stop for lunch to sample traditional Trás-os-Montes dishes.

What makes this unique?

Trás-os-Montes is one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions of Iberia, with Celtic, Roman, and medieval layers still visible in its built fabric. Bragança Castle, completed in the 12th century, sits atop a 680-meter hill on what was once a pre-Roman Celtic settlement and later a Roman fortification. This region is special for heritage photography. The pombais — small white horseshoe-shaped dovecotes built from local stone — are a distinctive Trás-os-Montes vernacular feature, found nowhere else in the same density. They once supplied villages with squab meat and fertilizer; most are now abandoned. Watermills, medieval bridges, churches partly overtaken by vegetation, and the schist-and-granite villages built around shared ovens and washhouses make this one of the densest vernacular landscapes in southern Europe. Living in Montesinho since 2010, António knows the people and the landscape particularly well, and can tailor the experience to each photographer's eye and technique.

What is the profile of the host?

António Sá is a freelance photographer and journalist, working across travel, ethnography and nature with hundreds of articles published in the Portuguese and international press. His assignments have taken him to Borneo, Alaska, Iceland, Mongolia, China, Namibia, and across Portugal. In 2007 he led the National Geographic Channel project Portugal in Focus, a documentary on Portugal's UNESCO World Heritage sites. António also teaches photography workshops and leads photo tours.  Since 2010 António has lived in Lagomar, inside Parque Natural de Montesinho. He is a naturalist whose deep knowledge of the region's landscapes, ecology, and human communities has built relationships that give visitors access to places and people most travelers never reach on their own. From here, he guides visitors through the Trás-os-Montes region at the rhythm of the seasons — work he treats less as commerce than as a way to share a place he loves.

What to bring?

Bring your own photographic equipment: camera body, lenses, extra batteries, and memory cards with sufficient space for a full day of shooting. Wear clothing appropriate to the season — Trás-os-Montes weather changes quickly, and the experience runs year-round across varying conditions.

Where is this located?
