Irene Ranaldi is an urban sociologist and independent researcher based in Rome. She was the first in Italy to publish a study on gentrification comparing her own neighborhood, Testaccio, with Astoria in New York. Her work draws from historical archives and years of field research, focusing on the social transformations of urban districts and the shifting boundaries between city centers and peripheries.

This is a scenic, cultural, countryside hike: guided, unhurried, accessible -- following established footpaths and country trails in the heart of Chianti. Art and nature meet in a landscape shaped by hills, vineyards, and small country roads. 

Elena leads the day at an easy pace, beginning with a visit to the old Abbey, a place marked by silence and striking beauty. You explore the church, ancient refectory, monumental kitchen, and Renaissance garden, gaining a sense of how the site has evolved over time and why it remains central to the area’s identity.

The path continues on foot toward a small chapel regarded as a miraculous place, where a brief stop introduces an ancient legend tied to the surrounding hills. You progress through gentle ups and downs with panoramic pauses that frame the countryside.

You will also visit a community garden and learn how its crops are used to produce teas and herbal remedies.

Over a relaxed, home-cooked lunch in the home of a local family, you will have the opportunity to hear about everyday life in this sometimes harsh environment. The afternoon is spent with a grassroots social project, experiencing firsthand how locals are working to improve their community. Chile

This full-day bird watching excursion is led by a naturalist guide and conservationist who surveys the local population of avifauna and knows all the best spots to encounter resident and migratory species. After leaving San Pedro, you first drive south towards Jere Canyon (Quebrada de Jere) where tamarugo conebills, oasis hummingbirds, white-winged doves, and plain-mantled tit-spinetails dwell. There are brief stops along the way in oases frequented by birds. The morning concludes at the Atacama Salt Flat's Chaxa Lagoon, where you will encounter three of the world's six flamingo species.

Upon return to San Pedro, you'll enjoy a relaxed lunch with Valeria in a local restaurant before driving north to highland canyons and wetlands. At the Machuca, Putana and Jauna wetlands, you will scout for the diademed sandpiper plover: any birder's crown jewel in the Altiplano. Vicuñas and vizcachas are usually spotted, and there is always the hope of spying Andean cats and culpeo foxes.

This avifauna safari is designed exclusively for birders, ornithophiles, and twitchers at all stages on their mission to encounter the world's rarest and most unique species. It all starts with the host, Valeria, who is a fountain of knowledge about the Atacama's fauna and whose passion for the desert's fragile ecosystems is unbridled. Valeria knows that birding requires patience, so her tour is delivered at a leisurely pace with plenty of time for you, the birder, to experience the joy of mindful discovery. 

While locating the diademed sandpiper plover is a major component of the experience, all birds encountered in this region have their charms. At the Chaxa Lagoon, you will have the pleasure of seeing the Andean, Chilean, and James flamingos wading side by side for the shrimp responsible for their rosy feathers. This is also a hotspot for puna plovers and Andean avocets. Visiting quieter canyons and wetlands allows for a mindful connection with birds and studying their behaviors.

Valeria Heindl is a passionate naturalist and conservationist who has resided in San Pedro de Atacama for over a decade. While operating her tour business, she has fostered deep roots in the community. Most recently, Valeria has participated in the Flamingo and Shore Birds Survey, the Diademed Sandpiper Plover Survey, and an ongoing CONAF raptor monitoring project in the Moon Valley. She has also deepened her knowledge by attending ROC (La Red de Observadores de Aves y Vida Silvestre de Chile) courses in Bird Physiology, Pelagic Birds, and Shore Birds Conservation. Portugal

This captivating seasonal walking tour in the Algarve's Barrocal region showcases the spectacular wild orchids that flourish here. Portugal boasts around 70 orchid species, with a significant variety found in this region, known for its botanical diversity and ecological significance. 

From February to April, the orchids begin to bloom, with the peak season between March and April. On this easy trail, you'll have the opportunity to discover several rare species, such as Bee Orchid, Bumblebee Orchid, and Woodcock Orchid, known for their unique adaptations and beauty.

The tour is designed to educate participants about the critical importance of orchid conservation. By understanding these plants' roles in their ecosystems and the challenges they face, you contribute to their ongoing preservation for future generations. Available only during the flowering season, this experience is both a visual delight and an engaging conversation about one of nature's most fascinating creations.

This is a food-and-neighborhood experience through Istanbul, tracing the daily routes locals take every day. It begins at the Spice Bazaar, where shelves of saffron, sumac, and dried figs recall the city’s trading past. From there, you’ll board a ferry across the Bosphorus and explore three villages on the Asian side—each with its own rhythm.

In Üsküdar, snack on street simit and stuffed mussels while browsing produce stands that locals frequent. Then hop into a dolmuş (mini-bus) to reach Çengelköy, a waterfront village known for its pickled cucumbers, tea gardens, and hillside lanes. From there, head to Kuzguncuk, where wooden houses lean into each other and synagogues sit beside churches. At every stop, you’ll sample what’s fresh: gözleme off the griddle, olives, cheeses, pickles, baklava, and tea. The route ends in a family-run café, tucked behind grapevines. You'll get a taste of the local commute—eating your way through 4 neighborhoods while hopping between ferries and minibuses.

 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Makgadikgadi means 'dry, dry', but the bush men and women know how to live in harmony with the land. Family and cultural ties are strong.

Our plan: To walk through the magnificent Quiraing and climb to the base of the Needle, a 120 ft jagged pinnacle, for views of the Outer Hebrides.

Highlights from the photo-hike: ☀️Awe-inspiring view of Loch Cleat (above). 💦 Scrambling over the steep cliffs on springy heather. 🐾 Checking out the structures that have been named — The Needle, The Prison, The Table — and naming those that haven’t. ⚡️Noting the exact moment when the weather turns on us. ❄️ Getting shrouded in mist and fog, and unwittingly playing hide-and-seek at the top of the ridge (this is, after all, where locals hid their sheep from raiding Vikings). 💨 Howling winds over 50 mph trying to gust us off the slopes. 💧Rain coming down in full force. ☁️ Feeling my spine tingle as clouds swirl around me in this unreal landscape.
