This 1.5-hour experience takes place at CasaPlan—a collaborative workspace for artists living in the city of Valparaíso and the wider Fifth Region of Chile. Located in El Plan (the flat part of the city), CasaPlan features a printmaking workshop, two galleries dedicated to contemporary Chilean art, and a cafe. Hosted by one of CasaPlan's resident mixed-media artists, Marcela Rodriguez, you will enjoy a private tour of the printmaking workshop, witness a lithography demonstration, and engage with creatives over their latest projects. 

Traditionally using limestone slabs, lithography is a printing technique that works on the immiscibility of oil and water. Marcela will also accompany you to the two visual art shows—explaining the concept behind each installation. In the instance that one of the artists exhibited is available in the workshop, Marcela will facilitate a cultural exchange with them. The experience includes coffee/tea and a slice of cake in the cafe and a print to take home.

CasaPlan is a cultural hub in Valparaíso that brings together art, food, education, and hospitality in a beautiful historic space. It was founded by the female artist Javiera Moreira and the architect Antonia Jarpa to serve as a printmaking workshop where established artists nurture emerging creatives through courses and residency programs. Being located on the periphery of Valparaíso's typical tourist trail means the venue retains a community vibe and is primarily visited by artists and local residents. 

Although cafe-goers glimpse the artists at work in the open-concept studio, Marcela's experience is the only means of interaction. As one one the few bilingual creatives, Marcela can facilitate conversations with the resident artists and lead a fascinating dialogue about Chile's modern art scene. Marcela will also escort you to the two art shows which often exhibit work by CasaPlan's resident artists. She will provide insightful commentary on the pieces, to be continued over coffee.

Meet Marcela in CasaPlan on Avenida Brasil, in Valparaíso, Chile. Upon arrival, make yourself known to a member of staff at the cafe and they will call Marcela from the workshop.

Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist who grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis in the US and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico, at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at CasaPlan in Valparaíso.

Spain

This experience begins in Sacromonte, the hillside district where the cave-dwellings of Granada’s Roma community shaped a culture found nowhere else in Spain. With Gabriela, you walk through this historic neighborhood and visit the Cave Museum, stepping inside reconstructed cave-homes that show how people lived, cooked, forged iron, wove baskets.

From the terraces, you see an iconic golden view of the Alhambra. Gabriela shares stories about the origins of the Roma community here, their role in Granada’s culture, and how Sacromonte became the cradle of the zambra, a flamenco style born in these caves.

The evening continues in the city center with an intimate flamenco show performed in a small tablao, where the focus is on artistry. Here, you witness the expressive singing, guitar and dance that define Granada’s identity. After the show, enjoy a drink and tapas.This experience blends history, community, and performance into a single evening that reflects the true spirit of Granada.

Sacromonte was the birthplace of the zambra — flamenco was shaped inside the caves you’ll walk through. Few visitors understand the neighborhood’s cultural weight: how Roma families kept traditions, how weddings gave rise to the barefoot dance of the zambra, or how the cave acoustics influenced the music.

In the Museum, you see spaces that recreate daily life: loom rooms, forges, kitchens, animal shelters. This gives you context most flamenco tours never include. From the hill’s terraces, you see the Alhambra from a beloved viewpoint.

The flamenco show is chosen carefully by Gabriela: intimate (no more than 20 people), authentic, performed by professional artists who treat each night as a personal expression, not a zambra cave show popularized by tourism. When possible, you may meet performers after the show — a chance to ask questions, feel the compás, or understand how music is passed down from generation to generation. You may even try the palmas (clapping) or a simple dance step.

This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Sant’Antioco Island

Trieste, Italy, is home to the Risiera di San Sabba, a former rice mill turned Nazi concentration camp during World War II. Today, the site operates as a museum and memorial, honoring the thousands of political prisoners, partisans, and Jewish victims who were imprisoned, tortured, and deported from this location. Risiera di San Sabba

Each evening, we wait for sunset to happen ... in fact the whole town stops whatever they are doing and gathers near the edges of the cliffs In Oia. 

It’s a ritual that we quickly make our own. We time our dinner, walks and activities so that we can get a prime seat to watch the performance. On the odd day that we miss it ... being on the wrong side of the caldera ... we feel we’ve missed a significant event in our day.

Each evening, the sun obliges and puts in a grand performance. 

The setting sun can look rather different in a cloudless sky. Santorini rarely has a cloud. Maybe one every two days ... making the sunset even more glorious. Flaws build character.

Cloudless Sunset

Art Galleries of Essaouira

In Santorini, we discover and fall in love with Vinsanto, the local dessert wine. So we drive up to Hatzidakis - a charming and intimate local winery - to check out the local grapes. The vines grow low to the ground and close to the road and we almost drive into them while looking for parking. 

The grapes are grown in an unusual way, not in arbors but low to the ground, in baskets made of vine stalks themselves. They are organic and are watered mostly by dew as the island has low water supply.

The tasting room is cave-like and we take home several bottkes of the small batch Vinsanto they produce.
