Japan

Step inside a working Buddhist temple in Osaka and spend several hours following the rhythms of a monk’s day. You’ll meet your hosts - a practicing monk who also works as an architect, and Zane, who has spent ten years in Japan studying religious and cultural traditions. Then you’ll change into the traditional robes of a monk and begin a series of mindful rituals.

First, a guided meditation and the practice of shakyo: hand-copying sutras in the form of kanji characters using brush and ink. This is a daily ritual for monks, intended to steady the mind before service. Later, you'll assist with the daily temple tasks, from preparing for festivals to sweeping the temple grounds.

Midday, you’ll share a shojin ryori meal: a simple, seasonal vegetarian lunch prepared in the Buddhist tradition. Zane provides translation, insights and context throughout.

At the end of the day, you’ll receive either a goshuin (temple stamp) or omamori (amulet)—a small marker of your day as a monk in Osaka.

Most introductions to monastic life in Japan take place in rural retreats. This temple is an active religious site in the grid of central Osaka. The experience is co-led by a temple monk who also works as an architect. He is passionate about blending modern design with tradition and along with his wife, who was born into a temple family, works to promote Japanese culture by creating various events such as tea ceremonies. 

Your co-host is Zane, a resident of Japan for 10 years originally from New York. His passion for learning about traditional Japanese culture and sharing it with overseas visitors has led him to close collaborations with Japanese people to share unique experiences for visitors to Japan. Zane also practices Japanese calligraphy and has a workshop in Kyoto.

I am completely fascinated by Buddhist prayer wheels. Our guide tells us that we should walk clockwise, turning the wheel and chanting, “Om Mani Padme Hum”. “Will that give me extra strength to climb up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery tomorrow?”, I ask him. “Absolutely”, he says earnestly. Well, at least one of us has faith, I think to myself.

Paro Taktsang - or Tiger’s Nest monastery - hangs off a cliff at a dizzying 10,240 feet over the Paro Valley. It’s a 5 hour climb, punctuated with lunch. Not too tough, as it turns out. I must be fitter than I think. But the guide reminds me - “See, I told you so”. 

The hike (including getting to the trailhead) takes about 6-7 hours, depending on how much time you spend at the monastery. 4 miles round trip on a wide dirt trail. At the halfway point is a cafeteria - and for most people, getting to this point is the toughest part of the hike. Beyond this, both the scenery and the difficulty of the climb are in your favor.

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

We arrive by RIB boat from Longyearbyen, dressed in survival suits, across a choppy Arctic Sea, with puffins and seals for company.

Isfjord Radio on Cape Linné, is an abandoned strategic communications station, with a decidedly interesting past, now converted into a stylish expedition lodge. 

Nothing could have prepared me for the extreme sense of isolation and wilderness. 

Imagine sitting all alone at latitude 79 degrees north and watching polar bears prowling outside the kitchen window. Two days ago, that is exactly what the staff at Isfjord Radio did.  After all, Svalbard’s travel slogan reads: “3000 polar bears, 2500 humans”. 

Hiking into the middle of nowhere, or along the coast looking for 1500-kilo walruses, is done with licensed guides, a couple of mandatory rifles for protection and huskies for company. It is a beautiful, stark landscape, filled with mystery and a sense of the unknown. 

Which direction should we head? Anywhere you want to go, comes the reply.

Visiting Quito, a detour should be made to the “ACTUAL Equator” museum. Only a 50 meters from where it was thought the equator passed, this used science to actually find the equator. The tour guide explains a bit about Ecuador and then shows why this is the center of the earth, with a few fun examples. The water really does flush in the opposite direction in the Southern Hemisphere and apparently this is due to the Earth’s centripetal force.

Spend your morning exploring the charming town of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its stunning architecture and rich history. Located about 27 km from Split, Trogir is connected to the mainland by a picturesque footbridge, making it an easy and scenic destination.

Begin your visit with a leisurely stroll through the narrow, cobblestone streets of Trogir’s old town. This medieval gem is filled with beautifully preserved buildings showcasing Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. The town's layout, largely unchanged since its origins, offers a unique glimpse into the past.

Start at the Trogir Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. Lawrence. This 13th-century masterpiece features an intricate Romanesque portal carved by Master Radovan and a stunning bell tower that offers panoramic views of the town and surrounding sea. Spend about 30 to 45 minutes exploring the cathedral and its treasures.

Next, head to the Kamerlengo Fortress, a striking 15th-century fortification that once protected the town. Wander around its sturdy walls and climb the towers for breathtaking views of Trogir and the Adriatic Sea. Allocate another 30 minutes to an hour for this visit.

As you explore, take time to enjoy the quaint squares and lively waterfront promenade, where you can savor a morning coffee at one of the local cafés. The blend of historical ambiance and coastal charm makes Trogir a perfect destination for a relaxed and enriching morning.

Charming Trogir

You can't spend holidays in Barcelona without also visiting the Sagrada Familia. It's probably the city's biggest attraction – and for a good reason. 

La Sagrada, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to the 19th century but is still under construction (some expect it to be finished by 2026, but in my view, 2030 is a safer bet). We opted for a walking tour to the monumental building with high pinnacles, numerous squiggles, and 3-dimensional interior design. Later, during the tour, we discovered the works of art by Sagrada’s architect Gaudi, including Casa Batllo and Casa Mila (La Pedrera). 

The Sagrada Familia is located a little northeast of the city center and is easily reached by metro, bus, or cab. We stayed about 5 hours in this part of the city – as we visited not only the church but also the surrounding area and had some fresh fish to eat in the nearby restaurants. You’ll also find many souvenirs – including miniature La Sagradas, a great gift to bring home!

Walking Tour: Sagrada Familia

Chile’s Piedras Rojas (Red Rocks) is a breathtaking natural wonder in the Atacama Desert, known for its striking red rock formations, turquoise lagoons, and dramatic Andean landscapes. Located at an altitude of over 4,000 meters (13,100 feet) near the Argentine border, this otherworldly destination offers some of the most vivid contrasts in color found in the region, making it a paradise for photographers and nature lovers alike.


1. The stunning red volcanic rocks, rich in iron oxide, create an intense contrast against the blue skies and aquamarine waters of the nearby salt flats.

2. Laguna Tuyajto and Salar de Aguas Calientes, two adjacent salt flats, offer a surreal, mirror-like effect with crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding Andes.

3. Panoramic views of the Andean volcanoes, including Cerro Medano and Cerro Caichinque, provide an unforgettable backdrop for landscape photography.

4. Peaceful and remote atmosphere, far from the more touristy areas of San Pedro de Atacama, allowing for quiet reflection and exploration.

Visitor Tip: Due to the high altitude, take time to acclimate before visiting and bring warm layers, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The area is best reached by 4x4 vehicle, and guided tours are recommended to navigate the rugged terrain safely.
