Discover the magic of Xochimilco’s wetlands and the agricultural and culinary traditions of its floating gardens: chinampas. Learn about the area's aquatic plants while rowing through canals at dawn in a traditional cayuco. - and hearing about ancestral traditions and the coexistence between humans and nature. 

At an eco center located on a 1200 year-old chinampa you see axolotl, the mythical amphibian once considered a delicacy of Aztec gods. You'll also meet Lupita, a Xochimilco native who welcomes you with organic coffee. She explains how the first inhabitants developed milpa, an ancestral and sustainable system of crop production. You may see small offerings once placed beneath crops by Xochimilca women, honoring Chicomecóatl, the corn goddess.

During your visit, you’ll engage in small but meaningful ways with their ongoing efforts to preserve traditional farming and daily life in the region. This two-hour experience takes place in the studio of celebrated tango dancer and choreographer Gisela Vidal. Through a private workshop, you’ll explore the fundamentals of tango—from musicality and posture to the nonverbal connection between lead and follow. Gisela’s approach makes space for both technique and emotion.

After dancing, you’ll sit with Gisela over mate (herbal infusion) or wine to reflect on tango’s evolution, her global career and the emotional qualities that make tango a living art. The final part of the experience offers a window into Gisela’s creative practice as a jewelry designer. You’ll explore how tango’s gestures, shapes, and symbolism have influenced her tango-inspired jewelry—shaped by the same rhythm, elegance and emotional nuance she brings to her dance. She’ll share how her designs emerged from her years on stage as a creative response to the movement and symbolism of tango. Each guest receives a small pin designed by Gisela to mark the moment.

Gisela’s work is rooted in the idea that tango is a cultural ritual, a way of connecting across language, background and time. Her teaching is intuitive, expressive and always personal. Through carefully structured exercises and improvised practice, she helps each student find their own rhythm and presence. Growing up in Buenos Aires, Gisela Vidal danced her first tango at the age of 14. From there, she trained extensively in Tango Salon and Tango Stage style with the finest Argentinian Masters. Besides tango, Gisela has studied contemporary dance, jazz, belly dance, ballet, Argentine folk, and salsa. She has undertaken further tuition in theater and film acting, mime and clown art, and singing.

Gisela has participated in international tango festivals and major events including the opening of the Dakar 2009 in Buenos Aires. She was the choreographer and a stunt dancer for the Tango Infedele Video Clip.

During her 20-year career, Gisela has danced and coached in over 40 countries. She co-managed a tango school in Milan and coordinated the Tango Querido School in Tuscany. She launched her own jewelry business in 2018.

Marco Secchi is a Venetian, English-speaking, award-winning editorial and travel photographer, renowned for his work with Getty Images and his expertise in visual storytelling. There is no better guide and mentor than Marco for this experience.

This cooking workshop takes place in a scenic Indigenous Zapotec town and introduces you to local ingredients and techniques specific to regional tamale-making. You'll be guided by a member of a Zapotec women’s collective that supports local women and their community, along with your guide, who will assist with organization and translation.

During the workshop, you'll get hands-on experience with the ingredients and methods used by the women in this collective to create handmade tamales. Women Supporting Women is a collective founded in the 1990s by Indigenous Zapotec women—many of whom were widowed, single mothers, or unmarried, circumstances that were socially frowned upon at the time. In addition to cooking, the group also weaves wool rugs, producing handcrafted pieces sold in their workshop.

You'll leave with a deeper appreciation for Zapotec cooking traditions and a richer understanding of the historical and contemporary challenges facing this community.

Taking place in a social impact-oriented space, this workshop is located in a traditional Zapotec village relatively close to Oaxaca de Juárez. It not only offers insight into local ingredients and cooking techniques but also supports the core mission of this women-run project, which helps local women and their broader community.

Joined by a host with a long-standing relationship with the organization, you’ll be welcomed into this meaningful space and invited to learn more about local culture and food traditions from a Zapotec perspective.

Proceeds from this experience go toward maintaining the space itself—a safe, communal hub where widows, single mothers, and unmarried women can sell their handmade textiles, host workshops, and take part in personal development courses focused on finance, self-care, and marketing skills.

This 10-day Morocco journey begins and ends in Marrakesh, unfolding through coastal Essaouira and the High Atlas Mountains in between. DAY 3 – MARRAKESH TO ESSAOUIRA | Begin the morning with A Thousand and One Crafts, a guided walk through the artisan medina of Marrakesh. After lunch, travel west through argan country toward the coast. Essaouira is directly west of Marrakesh, a 2.5 to 3 hour drive, a straight shot to the Atlantic. It offers a gentle and relaxed pause after the intensity of Marrakesh. Arrive before sunset and take in the sea breeze.

This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”
