Gaucho Ride into Andes Sunset

Saddle up for a thrilling horseback trek in the Andes Mountains, carefully timed to coincide with sunset. As the last of the light fades, you will return to the gaucho estate to continue the evening, socializing with your host over a traditional Argentine asado (barbecue) featuring roasted vegetables, salads, fresh bread, and Mendocino wine. After dinner, gather around the bonfire with a glass of wine and enjoy a brief folk guitar session — a traditional gaucho touch that brings the night to life under a sky heavy with stars. This experience includes pickup and return to your hotel in the city of Mendoza. Upon arrival at the mountain ranch, you’ll get acquainted with your horse and receive a brief safety lesson: novices through to experienced riders are accommodated. Diego, your bilingual gaucho guide, will lead the way into the mountains at a leisurely pace, stopping to savor the wild landscapes and capture photos along the way.

Not only does this experience provide the thrill of riding a horse through the world's longest mountain range, but it immerses you in gaucho culture from start to finish. Before embarking on the trek, you will bond with your steed and learn about the unique connection between gaucho and horse. The route traverses an area of raw natural beauty, untouched by modern developments and illuminated by sun and stars rather than city lights. Seeing these remote valleys bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun is the icing on the cake. Upon returning to the estate, you’ll settle by the fireside with a glass of Mendocino wine. The asado will then commence, inviting you to taste Argentine beef, seasonal vegetables, and freshly baked bread while conversing with Diego and hearing stories of the gaucho way of life and Criolla customs. Rather than feeling like a spectator, you’ll be welcomed into the fold and experience the spirit of the gauchos firsthand.

Diego Videla and Lucía Cubillos, husband and wife, work together to host travelers at their ranch in the foothills of the Andes near Mendoza. Their approach centers on creating immersive, experience-driven encounters that honor Criolla traditions and the culture of Argentina’s rural gauchos. Diego personally leads most horseback treks, though he occasionally entrusts one of his trusted gaucho colleagues to guide guests. He and his team of horsemen are always present at the ranch, taking great care to offer an authentic experience that fully immerses travelers in gaucho life — whether riding across remote valleys or gathering around a fireside asado to savor grilled meats, local wines, and heartfelt conversation. On some days, Lucía makes an appearance. Wear long trousers and closed-toe footwear such as sneakers or boots. Sandals and flip flops are not acceptable. Bring a hat, light jacket, and layers for the evening when temperatures drop. Sunglasses and sunscreen. Riders may carry a small bag while riding; larger items will be safe at the estate. We do not recommend carrying a bulky camera or unnecessary items on the ride.
