This is an exhilarating and demanding ascent to the Toubkal Refuge, starting from the village of Imlil. This demanding trek spans a total climb of 2500 meters (8,202 feet) to 3207 meters (10,522 feet) at the refuge, suitable for those with good fitness levels but does not require technical climbing skills. 

The trek passes the spiritual landmark of Sidi Chamarouch, a Muslim pilgrimage spot located in a very scenic place, before the steep climb to the refuge, set just below the summit of Mount Toubkal. The Monastery of Saint Mary of the Victory, also known as the Monastery of Batalha (“Battle”), was built in fulfillment of a vow by King John I—the first monarch of the Aviz Dynasty, Portugal’s second royal dynasty—to commemorate the Portuguese victory over the Castilians at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385, which secured Portugal's independence from Spain. It is considered the most significant example of Gothic architecture in Portugal.

Due to its artistic, cultural, and historical importance, the Monastery of Batalha was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Built by the Dominican Order, the monastery is a masterpiece of Gothic art in Portugal and reflects the stylistic evolution that took place over the two centuries of its construction. The complex is notable for its striking features of Flamboyant Gothic and Manueline styles. The experience is heightened by the light filtering through the stained-glass windows, casting colorful patterns on the bare stone walls of the church.

One of the highlights inside is the Chapel of the Founder (“Capela do Fundador”), the first royal pantheon built in Portugal. It houses the grand medieval tomb of King João I and Queen Philippa of Lancaster—depicted holding hands as a symbol of the strong alliance between Portugal and England—as well as the tomb of Prince Henry the Navigator. Adjacent to the church is the half-finished structure known as the “Unfinished Chapels” ("Capelas Imperfeitas"), commissioned by King Duarte of Portugal to serve as his royal mausoleum.

The Alcobaça Monastery is one of the most important religious buildings in medieval Portugal, closely linked to the birth of the kingdom and the first dynasty of Portuguese monarchs.

The monastery was established in the mid-12th century by Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, as a gift to the Cistercian Order’s leader, Bernard of Clairvaux—one of the most powerful European figures of the time—in exchange for spiritual, economic, and political support.

Alcobaça was built according to Cistercian principles: simple, austere architectural lines, without interior decoration or images. Nevertheless, by the early 14th century, it had become the richest and most influential monastery in Portugal, largely due to the Cistercians’ innovations in agricultural technology and land management. The church and its surrounding structures are considered the best-preserved example of Cistercian architecture in Europe.

The church and monastery were the first Gothic buildings in Portugal. Construction of the complex was completed in the 13th century, although it received several later artistic additions in the Manueline and Baroque styles—such as the 16th-century cloisters and sacristy, and later, the 18th-century church towers, elaborate altarpieces, sculptures, and tile panels.

Inside the church are the unique Gothic tombs of King Pedro I and his mistress, Inês de Castro—central figures in a tragic love story that culminated in the murder of Inês by Pedro’s father, King Afonso IV.

Its historical and artistic significance was recognized in 1989, when it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 13th-century Monastery of Coz was occupied by Cistercian nuns and was one of the few female monasteries in Portugal, dependent on the nearby Alcobaça Monastery. Mostly destroyed after the extinction of religious orders in Portugal in 1834, the church—originally from the 16th century—is the only part of the monastery that has been preserved. It features rich Baroque decoration, including beautiful blue and white tile panels, gilded altars, a large carved and gilded grille, and painted wooden ceilings.

The first impression of the Monastery of Coz reveals a building that appears to be in ruins—particularly the surrounding cloisters—and the only remaining structure has a simple, austere façade. But once inside the church and sacristy, you'll experience an architectural journey through various artistic styles, materials, and techniques, reflecting what was once a rich and powerful community of nuns who worked with and supported the nearby (male) Monastery of Alcobaça.

The monastery is slowly being restored and remains one of the most overlooked and precious hidden gems in the region.

In the mist-covered Blue Mountains of Jamaica lies the enchanting Holywell Park, a hidden gem that whispers stories of nature's wonders. Amidst the lush greenery, we embarked on a long walk with a local guide, seeking tranquility. We wandered through the verdant trails, each turn unveiling a canvas of vibrant ferns, towering trees, and melodious bird songs that filled the air.

Holywell Recreational Park, situated about 3,000 feet above sea level and roughly an hour's drive from Kingston, is a haven for nature enthusiasts. The park, part of the Blue and John Crow Mountains, is a lush sanctuary that boasts several species of ferns among other flora like wild raspberries, cheeseberries, epiphytes, nasturtiums, impatients, and notable trees including the Blue Mahoe (Jamaica’s national tree), Caribbean Pine, and Milkwood. The park also supports various species of endemic birds. It offers a range of trails with varying difficulties, from easy to moderate, and can take anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes to complete, providing an immersive nature experience amidst the cooler mountain temperatures.

Initially a medieval fortress, it now boasts the Renaissance grandeur of the Salone dei Cinquecento. A living testament to the city's political, artistic, and architectural evolution. Top reasons to visit:
1- The construction of Palazzo Vecchio, attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, began in 1299. Built over the ruins of the Uberti Ghibelline towers and atop a Roman theater, the palace exemplifies the triumph of the Guelph faction. It has served as the seat of the city council, composed of the Guilds of Florence, and even housed Duke Walter VI of Brienne. The architectural design, initially severe and medieval, concealed sumptuous halls and residential apartments​​.
2 - Created during the Republic of Fra' Girolamo Savonarola in 1494, the Salone dei Cinquecento is the most significant room in Palazzo Vecchio. Originally basic and almost devoid of decoration, it was later chosen by Piero Soderini for grand murals by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, depicting the Republic's victories. Although these works were never completed, their initiation marked a high point in Renaissance art. When the Medici returned to power in 1540, they transformed the Salone into a symbol of ducal authority. Giorgio Vasari was tasked with its renovation, elevating the ceiling and adding a coffered structure with forty-two panels. The room's decor glorified the Medici family, replacing the original allegory of Florence with a depiction of Duke Cosimo himself​​​​​​.

As you enter the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, and wander through its halls and chambers, know that you're walking in the footsteps of Doges and councilors who shaped the destiny of the Serenissima Republic. The palace stands proudly as a symbol of Venice's glorious past: Gothic grandeur meets Renaissance elegance. Key highlights:

1: The palace has opulent façades adorned with intricate carvings, statues, and frescoes. Originally a 9th-century structure, the palace underwent numerous renovations, especially under Doge Francesco Foscari in the 15th century, reflecting Gothic and Renaissance influences.

2: Inside, the Hall of the Great Council, built between 1340 and 1355, impresses with its size and harmonious proportions. Here, the greatest artists of their time, including Tintoretto and Veronese, contributed to its decoration. The highlight is Tintoretto's 'Paradise,' the world's largest oil painting, which fills the entire wall behind the Doge's throne.

3: The “Stairs of Gold” lead to the opulent state apartments. Only the Council and Doge's guests of honor were allowed to use these stairs. Each room, including the Doge's private quarters and the ornate Sala del Collegio, tells a story through its lavish decoration and artworks.

4: The council chambers, where policy decisions were made, are sumptuously decorated with paintings by Titian, Veronese, and other masters. 
5: The iconic Bridge of Sighs connects the palace to the prisons. The bridge got its name from the sighs of prisoners catching their last glimpse of Venice before their imprisonment.

The Doge's Palace

Pyrgos is a trendy hilltop medieval village. It’s full of little winding, narrow streets constructed haphazardly on the hills alongside multi-colored houses and doors. We lose our way several times and keep looping back to the same point .. using that as an excuse to check out yet another local art gallery constructed unobtrusively into the hillside. 

During the 15th and 16th century, the locals defended themselves from pirates by erecting kastelias .. fortified buildings. Pyrgos has the best example of these medieval buildings on the island. It also has the oldest churches.

We stop at a home with a large blue door .. and the views are stunning but give an impression that Santorini is flat and covered by vineyards instead of being a caldera. 

The one fascinating feature of homes here is a long, deep chimney for ventilation. And the strong winds make howling noises through the chimneys.

In Pyrgos, we visited vineyards ... but that’s a different story.

The Guadalquivir River Walk in Seville offers a peaceful yet vibrant way to experience the city’s charm while enjoying scenic views along one of Spain’s most historic rivers. Stretching along the banks of the Guadalquivir, this popular promenade links some of Seville’s most famous attractions, offering a blend of history, culture, and leisure activities. The river itself played a key role in Seville’s development, once serving as the main conduit for trade with the New World. Today, the walk is a favorite for both locals and tourists looking for relaxation and a touch of Seville’s past.

Highlights of the Guadalquivir River Walk:

1. Torre del Oro: Begin your walk near this iconic 13th-century tower. Its golden glow and rich history make it a perfect starting point. From here, enjoy views of the river and the surrounding monuments.

2. Triana Bridge and Market: Cross the picturesque Puente de Triana to visit the traditional Triana neighborhood, known for its flamenco roots and lively market. The market is a great spot for fresh produce, local crafts, and authentic tapas.

Guadalquivir River Walk

Portugal’s Elvas Fortifications, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, form one of the largest and best-preserved defensive complexes in Europe. Located near the Spanish border in the Alentejo region, Elvas played a crucial role in Portugal’s military history, particularly during the Restoration War (1640–1668). 3. The Walls of Elvas, an extensive network of Vauban-style ramparts, bastions, and moats, encircle the historic town and are considered a masterpiece of European military architecture.

4. The Amoreira Aqueduct, a stunning 16th-century structure with 843 arches, was built to provide water to the fortified city and remains one of the region’s most impressive sights.

5. Historic center of Elvas, with its charming whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and landmarks like the Elvas Cathedral and Military Museum, offers a glimpse into the town’s rich past.

Visitor Tip: Visit at sunset for the best lighting over the fortresses and surrounding countryside. Wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the fortifications involves walking over uneven terrain.

Elvas Fortifications

Athens, Greece, is home to Syntagma Square, the city’s most iconic public square and a focal point of modern Greek history and political life. Located in front of the Hellenic Parliament, this bustling hub has been the site of major historical events, peaceful protests, and national celebrations. Surrounded by luxury hotels, cafés, and shopping streets, Syntagma Square serves as the perfect starting point for exploring the heart of Athens.

1. The Changing of the Guard ceremony, performed by the Evzones in traditional dress at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, is a must-see ritual that takes place every hour.

2. The grand Hellenic Parliament building, formerly the Old Royal Palace, stands as a symbol of Greece’s modern democracy and political history.

3. The square’s fountain and tree-lined paths create a lively atmosphere where both locals and tourists gather for relaxation, people-watching, and street performances.

4. Syntagma Square is a gateway to Ermou Street, one of Athens’ premier shopping streets, featuring everything from international brands to local boutiques.

5. The square’s central location provides easy access to major attractions, including the National Garden of Athens, Plaka district, and Zappeion Hall.

Visitor Tip: Visit on a Sunday morning at 11:00 AM for the full ceremonial Changing of the Guard. In the evening, the square comes alive with lights, making it a great spot for nighttime photography.

Syntagma Square

Svalbard & Jan Mayen

We arrive by RIB boat from Longyearbyen, dressed in survival suits, across a choppy Arctic Sea, with puffins and seals for company.

Isfjord Radio on Cape Linné, is an abandoned strategic communications station, with a decidedly interesting past, now converted into a stylish expedition lodge. 

Nothing could have prepared me for the extreme sense of isolation and wilderness. 

Imagine sitting all alone at latitude 79 degrees north and watching polar bears prowling outside the kitchen window. Two days ago, that is exactly what the staff at Isfjord Radio did.  After all, Svalbard’s travel slogan reads: “3000 polar bears, 2500 humans”. 

Hiking into the middle of nowhere, or along the coast looking for 1500-kilo walruses, is done with licensed guides, a couple of mandatory rifles for protection and huskies for company. It is a beautiful, stark landscape, filled with mystery and a sense of the unknown. 

Which direction should we head? Anywhere you want to go, comes the reply.

Extreme Wilderness

The Chora Church, now the Kariye Mosque, is a breathtaking testament to Byzantine artistry and architecture, tucked away in the quiet Edirnekapı neighborhood of Istanbul. Originally built as a monastery church, this historic gem captivates visitors with its magnificent mosaics and frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Though less frequented than Istanbul’s more famous sites, it offers an intimate and awe-inspiring glimpse into Byzantine art at its zenith.

1. Stunning Mosaics: Marvel at the intricately detailed mosaics that adorn the church’s walls and ceilings. Highlights include the vibrant depictions of the Nativity, the Last Judgment, and the Virgin Mary’s life.
2. Masterful Frescoes: In the side chapels, the frescoes are equally mesmerizing, showcasing rich colors and dynamic compositions that bring biblical stories vividly to life.
3. Architectural Beauty: The church’s compact yet elegant structure is a fine example of Byzantine architecture, with its domes, arches, and harmonious proportions.
4. Quiet Ambiance: Located off the main tourist trails, the Chora Church offers a serene and reflective atmosphere, ideal for those seeking a deeper connection with Istanbul’s history.
5. Restoration Insight: Although ongoing conservation efforts mean some areas might be restricted, they offer a fascinating look at the meticulous work of preserving centuries-old art.

Visitor Tip: Check the current status of the mosaics before visiting, as some may be covered due to its functioning as a mosque. Arrive early to enjoy the peaceful setting and consider pairing your visit with a stroll through the nearby historic Balat and Fener neighborhoods.

Kariye Mosque

The Caves in Negril offers a unique and exhilarating experience for those seeking adventure in a breathtakingly beautiful setting. Perched atop honeycomb cliffs formed by volcanic activity, The Caves is a gateway to thrilling cliff diving and cave swimming experiences.

The natural structure of the cliffs at The Caves makes them an ideal location for cliff diving. The walls of the resort are a veritable museum of ancient fossilized marine life and provide a variety of diving spots. 

As guests at The Caves, we were encouraged to take early morning dives from the cliffs, with jumps ranging from 8 ft to 30 ft, and there's even a jump inside a cave for the more daring. 

Despite the excitement of cliff diving, it's important to approach this activity with caution. The heights can be intimidating, and the water can appear menacing, especially when the weather is not ideal. So be careful and always go with a companion.
