The Nahua are one of the most prominent and impactful indigenous groups in Mesoamerica. Nahua culture is diverse, stretching across civilizations such as the Mexica (Aztecs) and Tlaxcalteca, among others.

To explore this heritage, we’ll begin at the Cuicuilco archaeological site, a thriving city between 350 and 150 CE before it was engulfed by lava from the Xitle volcano. Here, you’ll gain an understanding of Mexica archaeology and culture.

Moving downtown, you’ll dive into an introductory Náhuatl language class. This will also give you an opportunity to learn more about the Nahua people's ritual calendars, deities, and how these cultural elements supported the functioning of one of the most fascinating ancient civilizations during its peak between 1345 and 1521.

This experience offers an authentic connection to ancient Mesoamerican cultures through two immersive cycles. At Cuicuilco, one of Mexico’s earliest urban centers, travelers will walk through history, exploring its ruins while uncovering the dramatic impact of the Xitle volcano’s eruption—a pivotal event that reshaped the region’s civilization.

During Semana Santa, you watch one of Seville’s most important traditions unfold from a private balcony.

This exclusive annual experience is offered during Holy Week (March 29 – April 5, 2026) with limited availability each day.

Semana Santa in Seville dates to 16th century and blends social gathering with deep religious devotion. Solemn processions wind through narrow streets, organized by 70 of Seville’s church brotherhoods carrying large pasos — elaborate floats depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ or honoring the Virgin Mary. Candles, music, incense and the steady rhythm of processions transform the city throughout the week. In Seville, it has long been customary for local families to watch the processions from private balconies along the route.

The experience lasts about 90 minutes. From this vantage point, and depending on the day, you observe one or two processions pass below while a Sevillian host explains the traditions, symbolism and structure of the processions.

Semana Santa is a deeply rooted tradition. The pasos carried through the streets contain sculptures that are centuries old. Beneath them walk costaleros, who train throughout the year to carry the heavy structures while remaining hidden beneath the float. Around them move the nazarenos, penitents in tall hoods whose presence has been part of the procession for over five centuries. Watching from a balcony is a unique experience. From above you see the formation and choreography of the procession, and its rhythm of movement.

In Seville, balcony viewing during Semana Santa developed because the streets are extremely narrow, the processions move slowly, and crowds became difficult to navigate—even for locals. Families along the route began opening their balconies to relatives and guests. Today many of those same buildings still host balcony viewing along the official procession route. With access to one of these private balconies, you’re able to take part in this long-standing tradition.

Peru

Have you ever wondered about the daily life of an archaeologist and what they do behind the scenes? This workshop lifts the lid on the care that goes into the preservation of archaeological finds. And doing so in Cusco places you within one of the most archaeologically layered regions of the Andes.

Hosted by local archaeologist Delsi and her sister, Yessika, you gather at a workstation around an assortment of artifacts sourced from the valleys around Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You learn about the pre-Colombian cultures of the region and how archaeologists use identifiers to place ceramic relics into historical contexts. Delsi then guides you through identifying ceramic types and approximating the age of vessels using simple metrics. You learn about excavation techniques in the region and how finds are cleaned, identified, and registered.

After lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum, where the knowledge gained earlier provides a new lens for reading the objects on display.

This archaeologist-led workshop offers rare access beyond the display case, allowing you to discover ancient pottery techniques used in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. You'll hold centuries-old fragments in your palm and use a microscope to identify materials used by pre-Colombian cultures in the manufacture of pottery. This may lead to a discussion of how pigments were produced for decoration and how vessels were used. From even a small fragment of pottery, you learn how archaeologists determine which part of a vessel it came from, estimate its size, and infer its function using systematic methods. In some cases, there is time to reassemble fragments, revealing how broken pieces come back into form through careful analysis.

After a local lunch, you visit the Regional History Museum with Delsi, applying what you’ve learned to objects on display. This museum visit, with an archaeologist at your side, allows for deeper engagement with Cusco’s archaeological heritage.

Irish-born Daniel O’Shea and Peruvian-born Delsi Espinoza are the co-founders of an archaeology venture that contributes to preserving the cultural heritage of Cusco and Sacred Valley. The couple have teamed up on archaeological projects across Cusco's Southern and Sacred Valleys. They run conservation, artifact registry, and site mapping projects — primarily designed for volunteers and students. Daniel and Delsi’s Fernwayer experiences are uniquely curated for curious explorers seeking to step into the shoes of an archaeologist for a day.

Delsi, a fully licensed archaeologist from San Sebastian in Cusco, hosts this experience alongside her sister, Yessika. Since graduating from the Universidad San Antonio Abad Cusco in 2014, Delsi has led regional excavation projects, maintenance programs, and educational initiatives. She has worked directly with the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, international organizations, local municipalities, and national parks parks including Machu Picchu. 

This half-day experience is designed for travelers who want to understand Málaga as more than a seaside destination. Barcelona, Spain, is home to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), a spectacular museum showcasing one of the most comprehensive collections of Catalan art in the world. Located inside the grand Palau Nacional on Montjuïc Hill, the museum offers a journey through a thousand years of art, from Romanesque frescoes to Modernist masterpieces. With its breathtaking views over Barcelona, majestic domed halls, and an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and photography, MNAC is a must-visit for art lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

1. Inside the museum, a world-renowned collection of Romanesque frescoes from medieval Catalan churches showcases some of the most important religious artworks in Europe.

Museu Nacional de Catalunya

Nestled in the heart of Trieste, the Canal Grande is a serene waterway, offering a picturesque glimpse into the city's maritime heritage. This historic canal, surrounded by majestic buildings and bustling cafes, serves as a charming testament to Trieste's unique blend of Italian and Austrian influences. Why you should visit?
1 - The Canal Grande, designed in the 18th century, was originally a key maritime route for Trieste. Lined with neoclassical architecture, it reflects the city’s prosperous trading history. This waterway, now a peaceful haven, was once bustling with merchant ships, echoing Trieste's vibrant past.

Canal Grande in Trieste

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

Fes Medina: Bab To Bab

The Akrotiri Lighthouse, perched on the southwestern tip of Santorini, is one of the island’s most iconic and scenic landmarks. Built in 1892, this historic lighthouse is renowned for its stunning views of the Aegean Sea and dramatic sunsets. While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, the surrounding area offers a peaceful and picturesque spot to admire the rugged coastline and soak in the natural beauty of Santorini. 
1. The panoramic views from the lighthouse are breathtaking, offering sweeping vistas of the caldera, the Aegean Sea, and the cliffs of Santorini. 
2. The sunset experience here rivals that of Oia, but with far fewer crowds, making it a more tranquil and intimate spot to watch the day end. 
3. The lighthouse is a historic landmark, representing one of Greece’s oldest and most beautiful lighthouses, with its classic whitewashed design blending harmoniously with the rugged landscape. 
4. The surrounding cliffs and coastline create a dramatic backdrop, perfect for photography and quiet reflection. 
5. The area is easily accessible by car or scooter, and the short walk to the lighthouse offers lovely views along the way. 
Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 30 minutes to 1 hour at the lighthouse, especially during sunset for incredible views and photo opportunities. Bring sturdy shoes if you want to explore the rocky surroundings and stay for the golden hour to capture the lighthouse and caldera bathed in soft light.

Akrotiri Lighthouse

Set in the picturesque Maria Luisa Park within the Plaza de América, the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions is a beacon of Andalusian ethnological heritage. Housed in the Mudejar Pavilion, designed by Aníbal González for the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition, this museum offers a deep dive into the region’s traditional culture. With its rich collection ranging from ceramics to lace and embroidery, it beautifully preserves the customs, crafts, and ways of life that have shaped Andalusia over centuries. 
1. The museum houses the Díaz Velázquez collection of lace and embroidery, one of Europe’s finest, alongside treasures such as the Aguiar costumbrista paintings and the Soria collection of oriental porcelain and ivory, highlighting centuries of Andalusian craftsmanship. 
2. Its ceramics collection is one of the most comprehensive in Europe, showcasing the evolution of Andalusian ceramic art—from traditional techniques to the cultural influences that shaped the craft. 
3. Exhibits explore intangible heritage, including traditional costumes, musical instruments, and agricultural practices, offering a vivid picture of Andalusian life and its deep connection to the land. 
4. The museum itself is an architectural masterpiece, with the Mudejar Pavilion’s intricate design, exposed brickwork, and decorative ceramics embodying the essence of the Neo-Mudejar style.

Museum of Popular Arts

The Roman Amphitheater in Via del Teatro Romano, Trieste, boasts a rich history dating back to the end of the 1st century BC. This impressive structure, dating back to the 1st century AD, offers visitors a captivating glimpse into the grandeur and spectacle of Roman civilization. Key highlights:
1 - The Roman Amphitheater, carved out of rock, once seated thousands of spectators, eagerly gathered for gladiatorial combats and public spectacles. Its elliptical structure, with the remnants of tiered seating and central arena, evokes the powerful aura of ancient Roman entertainment and social life. The structure, hidden over the centuries by surrounding buildings, was rediscovered in 1814 and fully unearthed in 1938 during a demolition. 
2 - This archaeological marvel provides invaluable insights into Roman architectural genius. You can see the sophisticated design and engineering techniques used in its construction, including the intricate system of underground passages where gladiators and animals were held before contests, showcasing Roman innovation and craftsmanship.
3 - Notable for its architecture that utilizes the natural slope of the hill, the amphitheater could accommodate between 3,500 to 6,000 spectators and was built primarily of masonry, with a wooden stage. Today, the amphitheater serves as a vibrant cultural venue. It hosts various cultural events, including open-air concerts, theatrical performances, and historical reenactments, bridging the past and present and bringing ancient Rome's spirit to life for contemporary audiences.
4 - Walking through the amphitheater, you truly embark on a journey back in time. Each stone and corridor tells a story of the past, from the roar of the crowd to the bravery of gladiators, offering a tangible connection to the rich history and traditions of Roman society.

Stepping into Piazza San Marco, with the majestic Basilica at its eastern end, is unforgettable. Napoleon described it as 'the finest drawing room in Europe'. 5 top reasons to visit:
 
1: Historical Evolution: In the Piazza, imagine, Venice in the 9th century, as St. Mark's Square was first established. It wasn't until the 12th century that it expanded to its current size under Doge Sebastiano Ziani. Around you, the Byzantine Saint Mark’s Basilica stands as a testament to Venice's rich history, originally founded in 828 AD to house the relics of Saint Mark, brought from Alexandria.

2: Architectural Marvel of the Basilica: Be awe-struck by the basilica's ornate façades and the intricate mosaics that adorn its domes, the grandeur of which reflects Venice's interaction with Byzantium and the East. The basilica is a harmonious blend of Middle-Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic styles, with Islamic influences evident in its artful display of polychrome marble columns and intricate designs.

3: Artistic Treasures Within: As you enter the basilica, you’ll be greeted by the shimmering gold-ground mosaics depicting saints, prophets, and biblical scenes. Argentina

Fruity, dry, red, white, sweet, sparkling — wine is delicious, and the best way to discover what this powerful potion has to offer is to take a bike tour through the vineyards (yes, on a bike). Mendoza is the best place to choose one of the hundreds of tour operators. 

Mendoza is the most popular wine-growing province in Argentina. And Bodega Tempus Alba has a perfect climate for growing high-quality grapes, and the majestic Andes Mountains provide the backdrop for some of the most beautiful pictures of vineyards to be found anywhere in the world.

Whether you're biking or not, a proper tasting tour will give you enough wine to come home tipsy. That's why I recommend eating well before your tour and taking a break when the magic of wine goes to your head.

I also spent some time hiking in the area, exploring the small villages in the area, and eating the best Argentine empanadas around. A trip for the senses, for sure.

Vineyards and boozy tours

Colombia

Palacio de las Dueñas, a jewel of Seville's architectural heritage, presents a splendid blend of Renaissance, Gothic, and Moorish influences. Currently under the stewardship of the House of Alba, this palace has served as a residence for the Spanish nobility since its inception. Its name is derived from the neighboring monastery of Santa María de las Dueñas,. The palace, renowned for its beautiful courtyards and gardens, exotic plants, and impressive art collection, remains a symbol of Seville's Golden Age, capturing the essence of the city's aristocratic past​​​​​​. Top reasons to visit:
1. The main courtyard, enveloping visitors in lush greenery and vibrant blooms, acts as the palace's welcoming heart. Benches lining the gallery offer tranquil spots to enjoy the serene ambiance and the playful dances of birds around the central fountain​​.
2. Palacio de las Dueñas houses an extensive collection of over 1,000 artifacts, including Italian and Spanish paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries. Palacio de las Dueñas

Antalya, Turkey, is home to Hıdırlık Tower, a 2nd-century Roman-era stone tower that stands on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Located at the edge of Karaalioglu Park, this ancient structure has served as a watchtower, lighthouse, and defensive fortification over the centuries. Today, it remains one of Antalya’s best vantage points, offering breathtaking sunset views and a glimpse into the city’s rich history.


1. Panoramic views of the Mediterranean, Antalya Bay, and Taurus Mountains, making it a prime spot for sunset photography.

2. The mystery of its origins, as historians debate whether it was originally built as a tomb, a fortress, or a lighthouse.

3. Karaalioglu Park, surrounding the tower, provides scenic walking paths, shaded benches, and charming cafés with sea views.

4. The tower’s Roman construction, with its massive stone blocks and cylindrical design, offers insight into ancient engineering and Antalya’s strategic coastal location.

Hıdırlık Tower

The Delta de l’Ebre Natural Park is one of Spain’s most unique landscapes, offering wetlands, lagoons, and endless beaches teeming with wildlife. It’s a paradise for birdwatchers, nature lovers, and outdoor adventurers.
1. Over 300 bird species, including flamingos, can be spotted in this biodiversity hotspot.
2. Scenic bike trails and walking paths wind through the wetlands and rice fields.
3. The pristine beaches offer a peaceful escape and are rarely crowded.
4. Boat tours and kayaking provide unique ways to explore the park’s waterways.
5. The area is famous for its rice dishes, particularly paella, which can be enjoyed at local restaurants.

Visitor Tip: Bring binoculars for birdwatching, and don’t forget insect repellent, as the wetlands can attract mosquitoes.

Delta de l’Ebre

In Marrakech, explore the labyrinth of the medina, lined with market stalls and craftspeople, and full of secret places and contradictions. 

Anonymous, windowless, fortress-like walls enclose luxurious riads built around tiled courtyards, complete with fountains and gardens.

Happily, my wonderful guide Khadija of Morocco Private Experience, encourages my curiosity. She leads the way across the medieval labyrinth of chaotic alleyways - to the souks where centuries-old skills continue to flourish. 

I am intrigued about how all the craftspeople are clustered together by trade. We watch a metal craftsman shape a pair of gnawa cymbals. A leatherworker allows me inside his workshop for a better view. There is an entire street of ornate lantern sellers - the bronze-latticed lanterns competing with the palm-leafed roofs of the souks in throwing light-and-shadow patterns all around.
