This is a rare opportunity to learn about the ancient cultural significance and rich history of candle making in an Indigenous Zapotec community. You'll experience the creative process of a master artisan who is at the heart of reviving this traditional art form in this community. 

You'll learn how these intricate works are made and even try your hand at beeswax flower making. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. Ehren Seeland is a Oaxaca-based creative with a background in art and design and journalism, who travels the globe for professional and personal pursuits. A long-term resident of Oaxaca with family ties to the city, her passion for regional produce, traditional skills, and social impact makes her a fantastic host for the culturally curious and socially minded traveler.

Through all of her projects—including Hecho, a marketplace of artisan-made goods from natural materials—Ehren maintains an active focus on supporting Mexican ancestral traditions through handmade product development, including textiles, pottery, homewares, and other works. Her projects also place special emphasis on supporting women and indigenous communities.

Japan

The city of Iwatsuki, just outside of Tokyo, is one of Japan's major centers for Ningyo doll production. Much more than simple toys, the dolls are celebrated as works of arts created by master artisans preserving an important aspect of Japanese heritage. Your guide, Hiro, will introduce you to the world of Japanese dolls starting with a curated tour of a doll museum, where he will explain the history of ningyo dolls and their production process. 

After the museum, you'll enjoy lunch at a long-established restaurant with a vast doll collection heading to a master’s workshop, where you will learn the traditional technique of "kimekomi," pressing fabric into grooves carved in the doll's body to create clothing. Your teacher is a master artisan who has been maintaining the craft as part of many generations of craftspeople in Iwatsuki. Take your work home with you as a special souvenir.

Finally, you'll visit a local doll shop for more up-close viewing and shopping for ningyo dolls.

Just across the water from Piazza San Marco lies San Giorgio Maggiore, once known as Cypress Island. Palladio’s luminous church seems to float on the lagoon, housing Tintoretto’s dramatic canvases. The bell tower rises beside it, offering views that sweep from the Basilica della Salute to the distant Lido. In the surrounding park, sculptures from a past Biennale punctuate the greenery.

The route then continues along the clifftop Route des Crêtes to Cap Canaille, where the cliffs rise to nearly 400 meters above the sea. From the viewpoints, the coastline opens onto broad views across the bay of La Ciotat and the island of Île Verte.

A visit to a local Cassis winemaker introduces you to the white wines for which this small appellation is best known. Following the coastal road back to Marseille, the day ends at the Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, with wide views over the harbor, Fort Saint-Jean, and the Old Port.

This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Built as the residence of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria and his wife Charlotte, this castle blends Gothic, Medieval, and Renaissance elements, offering visitors a glimpse into a royal past. 1 - The castle, designed by Austrian engineer Carl Junker, stands as a testament to the eclectic style of its era. It features more than 20 rooms including Maximilian’s bedroom, designed like a ship’s cabin, and the grand Throne Room. Motovun Hilltop Town

Nafplio, Greece, is home to the scenic Arvanitia Promenade, a stunning coastal walkway that stretches for about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) along the base of Akronafplia Castle. This leisurely path connects Nafplio’s Old Town with Arvanitia Beach, offering breathtaking views of the Argolic Gulf and the surrounding cliffs. Lined with palm trees, fragrant flowers, and dramatic sea views, the promenade is a favorite for both locals and visitors looking for a relaxing walk, a scenic jog, or the perfect photo opportunity.

Arvanitia Promenade

Argentina

Buenos Aires is one of the southernmost capitals in the world and also an exciting city. Although there are many ways to explore Argentine city life, biking is the most fun.

Biking is free in Buenos Aires, at least for a few hours. Using an app I downloaded to my phone, I spent the next few days biking around the Botanical Gardens, the best museums, art galleries, El Caminito, the riverfront, and the city's largest flea market (on weekends only!). While you’re at it, you can also visit one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world in Recoleta.

The bike paths are well developed, and if you follow the signs, you'll find the main points quickly. Be careful, helmets are not available. If you want to be on the safe side, rent one in one of the bike rentals.

Cycling through Buenos Aires

Hawaii’s Big Island has a lot to offer, including the view from the Southern most point in all of the United States. Unfortunately, there is no real marker for the location. The waters are gorgeous and there is a place to jump in from a height.

The Akrotiri Lighthouse, perched on the southwestern tip of Santorini, is one of the island’s most iconic and scenic landmarks. Built in 1892, this historic lighthouse is renowned for its stunning views of the Aegean Sea and dramatic sunsets. While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, the surrounding area offers a peaceful and picturesque spot to admire the rugged coastline and soak in the natural beauty of Santorini. 
1. The panoramic views from the lighthouse are breathtaking, offering sweeping vistas of the caldera, the Aegean Sea, and the cliffs of Santorini. 
2. The sunset experience here rivals that of Oia, but with far fewer crowds, making it a more tranquil and intimate spot to watch the day end.
