Italy

Venice’s history is inseparable from its bond with the water that surrounds it. This experience begins where the lagoon meets the entrance of the Grand Canal, reading the skyline of San Giorgio and Punta della Dogana as a way into the city’s past.

The navigation continues around Punta della Dogana and the Basilica della Salute, following lines that reveal stories of commerce, devotion and resilience. From here the route moves toward islands that marked important moments in the life of the Republic. San Lazzaro highlights its Armenian heritage, while Lazzaretto Nuovo, once part of the city’s quarantine system, recalls the measures that protected the Republic.

The passage through the Arsenale opens a view of Venice as a maritime power, with basins and gateways that still convey its scale. The loop around San Michele, Venice’s cemetery island, brings a different register, with its walls and cypress trees marking the city’s relationship with memory before returning toward San Marco.

Here, history, landscape, and living tradition converge. You’ll travel by private vehicle to the Guachimontones archaeological site, home to Mexico’s only circular pyramids — ceremonial structures built over 2,000 years ago by the Teuchitlán culture. Explore the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, one of Lisbon’s most important cultural institutions, with an art historian. Set within a serene modernist complex and surrounded by gardens, the museum presents over 5,000 years of art history through a refined collection assembled by the Armenian philanthropist Calouste Gulbenkian.

Rather than following a simple highlights route, this visit approaches the museum as a coherent project shaped by the collector’s vision. Corn has been a core element of the Mexican diet for thousands of years. Archaeologists have found maize cobs dating back to 4300 BC. Traditionally, the ingredient represented sustenance, fertility, and ancestral wisdom.

Türkiye

This Jun-Sep experience explores Didyma after dark, when the Temple of Apollo opens for night museum hours and the site is illuminated. Departing from Izmir (or Kuşadası) or Bodrum around 16:30, you travel by private vehicle for 90 min to Didim for an early dinner — simple dishes timed to fit the schedule — while your host frames the myths and history you’re about to see. 

From 19:30–21:30, you enter the sanctuary and walk through one of antiquity’s most imposing Ionic temples which Strabo, the Ancient Greek geographer once described as a “temple within a forest of columns.” 

Hatice — a licensed guide, storyteller and culture expert — walks you through the colossal Ionic plan, unfinished cella enclosure, Medusa reliefs, column drums and bases and the Sacred Way that once linked Didyma to Miletus. With cooler air, fewer visitors and dramatic lighting, this is an awe-inspiring visit that reveals both the monumentality and intimacy of an oracle site. Return to Izmir is around 23:00.

They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Karathona Beach

Climbing Mount Whitney was one of the most personally satisfying experiences of my 30s; the challenge and the beauty of the hike were high on my list of life experiences.

The hiking trail from Fira to Oia is one of Santorini’s most iconic experiences, offering a breathtaking journey through stunning landscapes, traditional villages, and dramatic caldera views. This 10-kilometer (6-mile) trail connects two of the island’s most picturesque towns and immerses you in Santorini’s natural beauty and charm. Whether you’re chasing sunrise or sunset, the trail is a must for adventurers and photography enthusiasts. 
1. Spectacular Caldera Views accompany you throughout the hike, with endless vistas of whitewashed villages perched on cliffs and the sparkling Aegean Sea below.

Red and Rose Valley

The perfect way to view the red pumice layers of Santorini is to walk from Oia to Ammoudi. Just 214 steps down, the going down part was easy since the reward is a meal at one of Ammoudi’s legendary fish tavernas by the sea.

We buy fresh seafood by weight - the classic order of octopus and calamari along with some fish -  and it’s grilled right then and there. The sights and smells of the sea are so familiar and similar - whether in this hidden Santorini cove or at home in San Francisco.

The walk back up to Oia is challenging on a more than full stomach. As we reach the top, we see the setting sun and that makes it all worthwhile.

Croatia

Whether you hike up, take the cable car, or drive, reaching the summit is a rewarding experience for nature lovers and photographers alike.

1. At the summit, breathtaking views of Dubrovnik’s terracotta rooftops and the deep blue Adriatic Sea make this one of the best photography spots in Croatia, especially at sunset.

2. The Dubrovnik Cable Car, a quick and scenic way to reach the top, offers stunning aerial views of the coastline and nearby islands on the way up.

Mount Srđ

Peloponnese, Greece, is home to the legendary Mycenae Archaeological Site, one of the most important ancient sites in the country and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once the heart of the powerful Mycenaean civilization (1600–1100 BCE), this ancient citadel was famously linked to King Agamemnon, the leader of the Greeks in Homer’s Iliad. Mycenae Archaeological Site

The ancient city of Pompeii is one of the most fascinating and well-preserved archaeological sites in the world. Buried under volcanic ash after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, Pompeii offers an unparalleled glimpse into daily life in a Roman city nearly 2,000 years ago. The volcanic ash remarkably preserved buildings, frescoes, mosaics, and even the casts of residents, allowing visitors to walk through the streets and experience the grandeur and tragedy of this once-thriving city.
 Highlights of Pompeii:
1. Visit the Forum, which was the social, political, and economic center of Pompeii, where people gathered for public speeches, markets, and religious activities. Surrounded by temples and public buildings, it offers incredible views of Mount Vesuvius in the distance.

Visiting the salt pans in Olhão during summer offers a unique and scenic experience, revealing a centuries-old tradition that continues to shape the Algarve’s landscape and economy. Located within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, these shimmering salt flats provide a fascinating look into the artisanal process of salt production and offer an ideal setting for observing wildlife. 

1. The salt pans are particularly striking in summer when the intense sun aids the natural evaporation process, leaving behind gleaming white salt crystals. Walking along the paths, you’ll see salt workers skillfully raking and collecting salt, a practice that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

Many tours include a tasting, allowing you to sample the distinct flavors of different salt varieties while learning about the region’s sustainable practices.

5. The Ria Formosa landscape surrounding the salt pans is beautiful in summer, with contrasting shades of blue water, white salt mounds, and vibrant greenery. The tranquil setting invites relaxation and reflection.

Bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water, as the summer sun can be intense. Comfortable walking shoes and a camera are also essential to fully enjoy this unique and photogenic landscape.

Summer Visit: Olhão Salt Pans

Cádiz, Spain, is home to El Pópulo District, the oldest neighborhood in the city and one of the most historic quarters in Europe. Dating back to the 13th century, this charming district is a maze of narrow cobbled streets, medieval archways, and beautifully aged buildings, making it a must-visit for history lovers. As the heart of ancient Cádiz, El Pópulo is home to key landmarks, lively plazas, and hidden local gems that reflect the city’s rich maritime heritage and Andalusian character.
