Once a nameless patch between Via Prenestina and Via Casilina, Pigneto only began appearing on maps in the early 2000s, following a wave of street art, pedestrian renewal, and urban transformation. But its roots go back much further.

Born in the late 19th century as housing for railway workers and artisans employed in nearby factories, tram depots, and waste facilities, the neighborhood soon became a backdrop for Italian neorealist cinema.

Walking through its early workers’ blocks and the charming “villini” district—small villas built by a railway cooperative between 1921 and 1924—you’ll uncover traces of a layered past.

Gardens and Art Nouveau façades tell a different story from the one often associated with Pigneto today. Now a hub of nightlife and alternative culture, the neighborhood blends its working-class origins with a bohemian spirit. Although historically popular in working-class areas of Osaka, tachinomi have more recently appeared around Kyoto, some with a twist of the local culture ingrained in their Osaka roots.

This adventurous hike is a 5km (3 mile) circuit (moderate difficulty) in the canyons of Atacama Desert's Salt Mountain Range (Cordillera de la Sal). A 50-minute drive delivers you amid this wilderness area beyond highly-trafficked Moon Valley. While the scenery is comparable with those Martian landscapes, this trek sits off the radar and cultivates a deeper connection with this remote region in northern Chile. Guided by Valeria, a naturalist and conservationist, you'll be urged to absorb the stunning nature and geology—and study 1000-year-old petroglyphs.
 
Bear in mind this excursion is suitable only for those with a decent level of fitness and physical mobility. The route involves one steep descent with loose terrain, a few river crossings, and wading through the cold-water river in the slot canyon. Hiking poles are provided and you'll need to rely on your hands for rocky obstacles. Typically taking 3.5 hours to complete the loop, Valeria will pace the trek to suit your capabilities.

Hiking in the world's driest non-polar desert at a 2,500 m.a.s.l. is no walk in the park! It is, however, the quest of a lifetime—and it's made all the better when you have a local naturalist handling the route, keeping you safe, and sharing intricate information about the ecosystem and its communities. Along the course of this moderate hike, Valeria will pause to educate you on the slot canyon and share insight on the region's wildlife—you may even encounter native and migratory birds.

After taking in the Andes and the dunes of the Salt Mountain Range from afar, you'll descend into the canyon and let the Rio Grande guide the way. This eventually turns into a stunning slot canyon which you'll pass by wading through the river (depth ranges from ankle to hips level)—it's the perfect antidote to those scorching summer temperatures. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Nestled in the historic Santa Cruz district, it’s a paragon of Andalusian architecture, blending Gothic, Mudéjar, and Renaissance styles into a stunning palatial residence. It’s a 16th-century edifice that serves as a living museum, showcasing the grandeur of Sevillian nobility. Today, it remains a semi-private residence, partly inhabited by the 18th Duchess of Medinaceli and her family. Here are the Top things to check out:
1. Enter through a Renaissance-style marble gate to discover a courtyard adorned with a collection of busts from Roman emperors to Spanish kings, set against the backdrop of exquisite azulejo tiles. We arrive by RIB boat from Longyearbyen, dressed in survival suits, across a choppy Arctic Sea, with puffins and seals for company.

Isfjord Radio on Cape Linné, is an abandoned strategic communications station, with a decidedly interesting past, now converted into a stylish expedition lodge. 

Nothing could have prepared me for the extreme sense of isolation and wilderness. 

Imagine sitting all alone at latitude 79 degrees north and watching polar bears prowling outside the kitchen window. Two days ago, that is exactly what the staff at Isfjord Radio did.  After all, Svalbard’s travel slogan reads: “3000 polar bears, 2500 humans”. 

Hiking into the middle of nowhere, or along the coast looking for 1500-kilo walruses, is done with licensed guides, a couple of mandatory rifles for protection and huskies for company. It is a beautiful, stark landscape, filled with mystery and a sense of the unknown. 

Which direction should we head? Anywhere you want to go, comes the reply.

Extreme Wilderness
