You will meet Jaime at the main entrance of the Museo Reina Sofía National Art Center. Look for the two glass elevators on the exterior of the building. Nearby, there is a tall, vertical sculpture that makes the meeting point easy to identify. The name pf the square is Plaza de Juan Goytisolo.

Jaime is an art historian trained at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), with further studies at the Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia. He spent several years working in cultural management within one of Madrid’s most prestigious private art collections, where he developed a close understanding of how art, architecture, and history are interpreted and presented.

Today, Jaime is a professional guide in Madrid, combining academic rigor with on-the-ground observation of the city’s evolving urban fabric. He continues to work across the tourism and cultural sectors, bringing historical context to the streets, buildings, and monuments that shape Madrid’s identity. Jaime speaks Spanish, English, and Italian, and is a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) under UNESCO.

This full-day tour begins in Bilbao and takes you by private car through the landscapes, towns and cultural memory of Basque Country — from industrial past to prehistoric art, from coastline to forest.

You start at the Bizkaia Bridge in Getxo, a UNESCO World Heritage site and symbol of the region’s industrial legacy. From there, continue inland to Guernica, the town made famous by Picasso's legendary anti-war painting - find out how the area was impacted by the Civil War.

In the town of Getxo (which the bridge takes you to) you will see examples of 19th mansions, built by the wealth accumulated by the area's industrial magnates.

Next, you'll be driven to Guernica, the subject of Picasso's anti-war and anti-fascist painting which hangs in Madrid's Reina Sofia. Here, you'll be taken on a walking tour through the town and into the assembly house. This provides the perfect excuse to find out more about Basque culture, history, and language.

Bilbao History 101

The Bay of Biscay is famous for its beautiful coastline, beaches, and food. At Mundaka you'll stop off for a panaromic view, which changes dramatically between low tide and high tide. You'll then be taken to the historic town of Bermeo for a walking tour.

Heading inland you'll find two examples of Basque artistry. Santimamiñe is a cave that contains Paleolithic paintings and engravings dating back 14,000. These depictions of bison, horses, and deer give us a glimpse into a prehistoric world. This cave is only accessible April-October. Meanwhile, nearby, in the Bosque de Oma you'll find pine tress painted by Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola in the 1980s.  The geometric shapes, eyes, animals, and colorful forms you'll find here change depending on where you're standing, playing with your perspective in the forest.

This journey captures the essence of the Basque Coast in a way that blends scenery, culture, and cuisine. Mundaka is legendary for being home to one of the longest left-hand breaks in the world, making it a pilgrimage site for wave-riders. Yet the experience doesn’t stop at natural beauty—the town of Bermeo adds a vibrant cultural layer.

The cave and forest add another dimension completely. Here, you'll see art 14,000 years old, as well as paintings on living tress. Before being taken back to Bilbao, you'll go to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, an islet connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge, home to a 10th century hermitage. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe was made famous thanks to its use as a location for the Season 8 of Games of Thrones.

This region is legendary for its cuisine. M'Angel will take you to a hand-picked spot, either inland or by the coast, depending on the season, where you'll enjoy beautiful wines and regions dishes of the highest quality. 

You'll get to enjoy some choice regional wines and pintxos at a txakoli winery. Txakoli wine tends to be white and is known for its citrusy and herby palate.

In Oaxaca are so many different indigenous groups spread across numerous villages, and each of them is known for their unique works of art, from rugs to pottery, flowers, and paintings.

Street art in Oaxaca tells stories about Mexico, their struggles for independence and economic development, and against military dictatorship and US American influence. You can learn a lot from indigenous rights to natural disasters through street art in Oaxaca by walking through the streets and analyzing each mural.

Colombia

Tharros, located on the Sinis Peninsula in western Sardinia, is an ancient archaeological site that offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s rich history. Founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BCE and later inhabited by Carthaginians and Romans, Tharros is a stunning open-air museum surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. With its well-preserved ruins, scenic coastal setting, and proximity to pristine beaches, Tharros is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. 
1. The archaeological ruins include remnants of Roman baths, streets, temples, and houses, offering insight into life in this once-thriving ancient city. 
2. The two standing columns, overlooking the sea, are among the most iconic features of the site, creating a striking contrast against the blue waters.

Visitor Tip: Plan to spend 1.5 to 2.5 hours exploring Tharros and its surroundings. Wear sturdy shoes, bring sunscreen, and visit in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Combine your trip with a swim at nearby beaches like Is Arutas or San Giovanni di Sinis.

Tharros Sinis Peninsula

Buenos Aires is one of the southernmost capitals in the world and also an exciting city. Although there are many ways to explore Argentine city life, biking is the most fun.

Biking is free in Buenos Aires, at least for a few hours. Using an app I downloaded to my phone, I spent the next few days biking around the Botanical Gardens, the best museums, art galleries, El Caminito, the riverfront, and the city's largest flea market (on weekends only!). While you’re at it, you can also visit one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world in Recoleta.

The bike paths are well developed, and if you follow the signs, you'll find the main points quickly. Be careful, helmets are not available. If you want to be on the safe side, rent one in one of the bike rentals.

Cycling through Buenos Aires

Nafplio, Greece, is home to the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation Museum, one of the most renowned museums dedicated to preserving and showcasing Greek folk art, culture, and traditions. Founded in 1974 by Ioanna Papantoniou, a celebrated stage and costume designer, the museum has won the European Museum of the Year Award and features a rich collection of traditional costumes, textiles, tools, and everyday objects from across the Peloponnese. 5. The museum shop features handcrafted textiles, books, and locally made gifts, perfect for those looking to take home a piece of Greek folk culture.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid crowds and allow time to explore nearby Syntagma Square. Don’t miss the temporary exhibitions, which often feature modern interpretations of Greek folk art.

Jamaica

Jake’s is a Jamaican treasure. In fact, where it’s located is actually called Treasure Beach. 

Getting there from Montego Bay Airport takes a full two and a half hours on rough country roads - more than three if you stop at the jerk chicken place as we did. We stayed in a colorful bohemian cottage on the sea and tasted our first Ackee and Codfish - Jamaica’s breakfast dish - here. 

The evenings are for crooning to live music - reggae or calypso — before falling asleep to the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks literally at your feet.

Peru

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Portugal’s Elvas Fortifications, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, form one of the largest and best-preserved defensive complexes in Europe. Located near the Spanish border in the Alentejo region, Elvas played a crucial role in Portugal’s military history, particularly during the Restoration War (1640–1668). The star-shaped fortresses, massive city walls, and underground tunnels showcase the brilliance of 17th-century military engineering, making Elvas a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and photographers alike.

1. Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça, an imposing hilltop fortress, offers breathtaking panoramic views and a fascinating history as a former prison and military outpost.

2. Forte de Santa Luzia, another well-preserved star-shaped fort, features an underground passage connecting it to the city, once used for secret troop movements.

3. The Walls of Elvas, an extensive network of Vauban-style ramparts, bastions, and moats, encircle the historic town and are considered a masterpiece of European military architecture.

4. The Amoreira Aqueduct, a stunning 16th-century structure with 843 arches, was built to provide water to the fortified city and remains one of the region’s most impressive sights.

5. Historic center of Elvas, with its charming whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and landmarks like the Elvas Cathedral and Military Museum, offers a glimpse into the town’s rich past.

Visitor Tip: Visit at sunset for the best lighting over the fortresses and surrounding countryside. Wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the fortifications involves walking over uneven terrain.
