Ana Isabel Ramos is a designer, illustrator, artist, and children’s book author living in Lisbon, Portugal. A native of this city, Ana has made Lisbon her home after living on three different continents. Having first-hand experience of being a foreigner when living abroad, Ana knows how long it can take to get to know a new place and believes sketching is a shortcut to it.

She has been sketching all her life and as a daily practice since the beginning of 2021. This consistent routine has helped change her relationship with time and space. She believes sketching slows everything down and affords a different connection with the people around us and the place we’re at.

When she’s not taking you to the best spots in Lisbon to sketch, she works with women to help them connect to their inner wisdom and creativity to get clarity and live life more fully, embracing their artistic side. You'll start your experience at a tiny, 8-seat yakitori shop that is only open for a few hours each night. Established by a husband and wife team nearly 40 years ago, the wife took over running the shop on her own when her husband's health declined several years ago. A long established clientele and 6 consecutive appearances on the annual Top 100 yakitori shops in Tokyo keeps the shop full nearly every night, but also makes it difficult for newcomers to join in.

Your host Aya is a long-time customer of the shop who will introduce you to the owner and customers alike as you enjoy a full course yakitori meal, drinks, and friendly interaction with the regulars. The shop closes at 9:00pm, at which point you and the remaining regular customers help shut down the shop before heading to the nearby Golden Gai area to enjoy a few rounds of drinks and lively conversation.

Establishments like this yakitori shop, with excellent quality food, a long list of regular customers, and few seats can be nearly impossible for visitors to Japan to enjoy on their own. What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

A road trip through Spain is literally the best option for those looking for a local, less touristic experience. You can basically rent a car anywhere you want – we started in Barcelona, heading down the coast, and taking stops in Ebro Delta and Denia and other sleepy beach towns down the road. One of our highlights was the Spanish town of Cartagena – a historical hub with beautiful angled roads, traditional culture to explore (expect to be invited to some Cerveza by the locals), and history lessons about Phoenician traders, Roman soldiers, and Christian Reconquistas. If you have some days left, visiting Andalusia is a must. It's by far the most beautiful region in Spain and is known for its majestic horse breed, pristine beaches, hot weather, and super friendly culture. 
All in all, it took us two weeks to get down the coast – but you can make it in a week as well – though you might have less time to explore, sunbathe, and learn about the history of Spain

Colombia

Nafplio, Greece, is home to a maze of charming Old Town alleys that wind through the heart of one of the country’s most picturesque cities. Known for its neoclassical architecture, vibrant bougainvillea, and cobbled streets, these alleys reflect Nafplio’s rich history as the first capital of modern Greece. Every turn reveals something new—whether it’s a hidden café, a boutique shop, or a sunlit square—making the Old Town a must-visit for travelers seeking authentic Greek charm and unforgettable photo opportunities.

1. Colorful neoclassical buildings adorned with wrought-iron balconies and draped in flowering vines create a picture-perfect setting for photography.

2. Hidden among the alleys are local artisan shops selling handmade jewelry, leather goods, and traditional komboloi (Greek worry beads).

3. Cozy cafés and tavernas offer the perfect spots to enjoy a coffee or sample Greek delicacies like loukoumades (honey-soaked doughnuts) and baklava.

4. The Syntagma Square, located within the Old Town, is surrounded by historic landmarks like the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio and the Trianon Mosque.

5. Scenic walking paths lead to breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the harbor, the Bourtzi Fortress, and the distant Palamidi Castle.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning for quieter streets and soft natural light, perfect for capturing the beauty of the alleys before the crowds arrive. Wear comfortable shoes, as the cobblestone paths can be uneven.

Georgia

Tbilisi made me excited, because of the lovely atmosphere, amazing people and perfect weather. It is inspired me from the center to the outskirts. I would like to continue exploring Georgia and it’s culture.

San Pedro de Atacama is an oasis within the driest desert in the world at the very north of Chile. At more than 8000 feet above sea level, it sits in the center of a ring of volcanoes, the most famous of them being Licancabur. A couple of them still spew smoke.

Volcano climbing, consequently, is a very popular activity here ('why climb the volcanoes?’ - I ask. ‘Because you can!’- says the guide) and we are quickly put on a 4-day program to acclimatize ourselves to the altitude - with progressively higher altitude hikes to prepare us for the final climb. My favorite part of the hikes is the opportunity to capture the colors of the altiplano! That and the thrill of walking through the Mars like topography of the Atacama desert.

Climb Licancabur if you are an experienced climber, Toco or Corona for one day climbs. And you will have bragging rights forever for having climbed a volcano!

Volcano Climbing

The Brancacci Chapel, tucked away in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, is renowned for its frescoes. 1 - The Brancacci Chapel's walls are adorned with frescoes that revolutionized Renaissance art. Masaccio's 'Expulsion from the Garden of Eden' and 'The Tribute Money' are particularly notable for their use of perspective and chiaroscuro, techniques that added a new dimension and realism to painting. These works had a profound influence on later artists, including Michelangelo and Raphael.
2 - The frescoes are a result of the collaboration between Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi. While Masolino initiated the project with a softer, more Gothic style, Masaccio's contributions introduced a more naturalistic approach. Lippi, completing the chapel after Masaccio's untimely death, brought his unique touch, bridging the gap between the early and high Renaissance styles.
3 - A Tale of Redemption: The frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel depict scenes from the life of St. Peter, serving as a visual narrative of sin and redemption. In the heart of Fes, the Chouara and Sidi Moussa tanneries stand as enduring relics of the Middle Ages, their practices largely unchanged since that era. Here, the ancient art of leather tanning transforms raw hides into beautifully supple fabrics through a strikingly colorful yet arduous process. As you navigate the narrow alleys leading to the tanneries, the air grows thick with a pungent aroma, a hallmark of this traditional craft. Things to look for:

1. The Chouara Tannery, perhaps the most famous in Fes, alongside Sidi Moussa, offers a rare glimpse into the labor-intensive process of leather production. Hundreds of workers from multiple generations of families toil from sunrise to sunset. They labor over open vats filled with a vivid mosaic of natural dyes and pigeon dung, an essential component in softening the leather. This spectacle of color and effort unfolds beneath the Moroccan sun, casting a palette that feels almost surreal against the earthy tones of the Medina.

2. Visitors are handed a sprig of mint to ward off the overwhelming smells. The sensory overload is part of the experience!

3. Guides explain the dyeing process, pointing out the use of natural ingredients like saffron, poppy flower, indigo, and henna. 

4. After dyeing, the leathers are laid out to dry on the nearby rooftops, creating an iconic and photogenic scene that defines the visual landscape of the tanneries.
