What is this?
The highlight of this full-day tour is privately-arranged pre-opening access to Pena Palace, before continuing through the forested hills of Sintra to the Atlantic coast.
After a scenic drive from Lisbon, you enter this 19th-century Romantic landmark ahead of general admission. Built by King Ferdinand II atop the ruins of a former monastery, Pena blends Gothic, Moorish, Manueline and Renaissance revival influences — an architectural expression of Romantic imagination set high above Sintra.
After exploring the terraces and interiors, you pause for coffee and a pastry before continuing through Serra de Sintra to Convento dos Capuchos. Founded in 1560, this Franciscan retreat offers a contrast to Pena: cork-lined cells, narrow passageways, and architecture shaped by restraint and solitude.
From the hills, the route turns toward the Atlantic, ending in Azenhas do Mar, where whitewashed houses descend toward the sea. Here, you settle in for lunch overlooking the cliffs before returning.
What makes this unique?
This experience grants private access to Pena Palace before it opens to the public, allowing time to appreciate its details without the usual crowds. Limited to two guests, the experience allows space for shared perspective and time spent together in a place of natural and architectural beauty.
Sintra’s Atlantic microclimate often leaves mist moving through the forest around the palace at that early hour. In the stillness of the morning, its vibrant colors and dramatic hilltop setting are experienced at your own pace, in quiet. There is time for photographs and for Rita’s stories to understand how the palace embodies the Romantic movement’s fascination with fantasy and nature.
As the town begins to fill, you head deeper into the forest to the Convento dos Capuchos, a 16th-century Franciscan retreat where monks lived in simplicity. You then continue toward Azenhas do Mar, a cliffside village of whitewashed houses. Far quieter than nearby coastal hubs, it’s a fitting stop for lun
What is the profile of the host?
Your guide is a storyteller with a deep familiarity with Sintra's palaces and aristocratic history. Drawing on her background in theatre, cultural studies, and literary tourism, she approaches Sintra as a layered narrative shaped by royal life, romantic ideals, and daily rituals. She moves through historic estates with ease, weaving architecture, food, and local history into a coherent narrative that reveals Sintra in a quieter, more intimate light.
What to bring?
Bring comfortable walking shoes (for slopes and natural paths), a light jacket or sweater (hilltop temperatures vary), your camera or smartphone for pictures, a bottle of water, and sun protection (hat/sunglasses).
