Japan

Tokyo is a city of sharp contrasts — and this tour is designed to showcase Tokyo's rhythm, from forest shrine in mid-afternoon to Shibuya at night. 

You begin at a Shinto shrine in the middle of the city, surrounded by towering trees. Your guide shares the customs of shrine visits and helps you collect a Goshuin, handwritten seal pressed into paper. Beyond the torii gates, the energy changes fast. Takeshita Street hums with teenage fashion, storefronts stacked with color and sound. In Omotesando, concrete and glass architecture reflects a city reshaping itself.

From there, a short ride takes you to Zojoji Temple, where the Tokugawa family once worshipped. The temple’s wooden gate dates to 1622. Behind it, Tokyo Tower rises in red steel- a contrast of centuries in a single frame.

Dinner is in Shibuya. You cross the scramble under flickering screens and end in a back alley of tiny bars and paper lanterns, where Tokyo narrows and lets you glimpse a past behind its brightest lights.

After a short taxi drive, you arrive at Zojoji Temple, the Tokugawa shogunate’s family temple. This place has tremendous gravitas. The Sangedatsumon Gate (1622) remains bronze-fastened wood, offering shade and shadow. Beyond it rises Tokyo Tower, completed in 1958, its broadcast lights glowing like embers in steel. Within Zojoji’s grounds are mausoleums of Tokugawa shoguns and quiet memorials. You will visit a gallery showcasing a remarkable collection of painted scrolls.

From there, slip into Nonbei Yokocho, a narrow alley of tiny Showa-era bars lit by lanterns. This is where Tokyo winds down without slowing down.

Nonbei Yokocho means "Drunkard’s Alley," but its charm isn’t in the alcohol — it’s in the intimacy. These bars hold decades of history in ten square meters. With your guide, you learn the etiquette, the backstories, and the names behind the signs.

In her charming studio among the winding streets of a western Tokyo neighborhood, your host Keiko has been practicing sashiko and teaching students from all over the world the techniques used to make beautiful patchwork on clothing and other textiles.

In this three-hour experience, you’ll enjoy making a Fernwayer exclusive sashiko pouch designed by Keiko as you chat with Keiko and learn about the fascinating art of sashiko mending. The pace of the workshop is relaxed to allow for plenty of one-on-one coaching, and there is a private experience option for those who want a truly exclusive experience. You’ll leave Keiko’s workshop with a comfortable grasp on sashiko techniques, and the tools and materials needed to continue practicing at home.

Keiko’s experience immerses you in the world of sashiko. By stitching visible repairs, you connect deeply with sashiko’s wabi-sabi philosophy. 

The workshop is geared toward intermediate crafters who wish to gain a deeper knowledge of this traditional Japanese craft. You will spend over two hours working on a special sashiko pouch specially designed by Keiko for this experience, getting tips and coaching as you work. You will also have time for a short tea break to enjoy a little snack and chat with Keiko and ask any questions you might have.

Both the shared option and private workshop provide an extended timeframe compared to a typical session, and the private lesson ensures you make the most of your time with her.

Olivier, whose career once took him around the world in science and business, always kept wine as his constant passion. In 2021 he embraced the dream of becoming a vintner, dedicating himself to reviving the potential of the estate and the historic French grape Côt (Malbec).

A calçotada is a seasonal Catalan ritual (November–April) centered on the communal roasting and eating of calçots - sweeter, elongated onion-like shoot cultivated in trenches.  

You’ll depart Barcelona in private car, into the Catalan countryside. Your destination: a working garden where calçots (pronounced kal-sotz) are grown, harvested and prepared over open fire. 

Along the way, you’ll stop at the Royal Monastery of Santes Creus, a medieval Cistercian abbey built in 12th century, with Gothic cloisters, royal tombs and austere architectural purity.  

At the garden, you’ll meet the farming family and learn about the cultivation of calçots. Then comes the feast: calçots grilled until the outer layers blacken, wrapped in newspaper to steam and eaten by hand — peeling away charred exteriors and dipping each stalk into romesco (or a similar sauce). Expect to get your fingers messy, and partake in what is, by design, a convivial, generous meal. This is as farm-to-table fresh as it gets.

A calçotada is a food experience that is sociable, traditional, delicious, and playful. It’s about ritual, regional identity, rural air, fire, laughter, wine, and the earth that grew your food. The ritual of gathering friends for a gluttonous afternoon to eat them defines Catalan winter life in rural areas. While many gastronomic experiences offer tasting or cooking classes to visitors, few immerse you in a tradition still rooted in community and seasonality. 

In this private gathering, the owners will share how calçots are planted and harvested as leafless stalks. His ability to craft such detailed and expressive pieces without sight has earned him the moniker "manos que ven"—hands that see. 

Unlike many of Oaxaca’s 70+ pottery communities, where skills are passed down generationally, Maestro José is self-taught. He began by making animals from clay as a child. His greatest collaborator is his wife, Maestra Teresita, who adds the details to his sculpted forms. Their work is a living love story—quietly powerful and unlike anything else.

Their adult children now contribute their own custom pieces, and the family workshop also includes a tattoo studio upstairs—proof that creativity here takes many forms.

He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. Art to Coast in Valparaíso

3 days in Valparaíso blending street art, food, architecture, and coastal craft with local guides.

Iceland

This being a ‘chill trip’, we did not want to hike 10 hours on a glacier. Instead we trek on the Vatnajokull glacier looking for ice caves with wind on our face and ice under our feet.

Earlier, we woke up at 7 and drive in cold and windy January to Skaftafell National Park to meet Einar, our guide. 

This cave... like others ... started forming In August but you are never sure it will be stable to explore till later. In September, the loose ceiling collapsed  and this brilliant cave was formed.

These fragile and transitory structure require constant maintenance from falling rock and melting icicles. Einer enters the cave and spots a few boulders on the roof. He removes them to prevent harm to the cave and us. 

As we move around, the cave looks different as our viewing angle and the sunlight outside changes.

We are in complete awe ... and hungry. Luckily a steaming meal of lamb and potatoes is close by.

Ice Caving

Embark on a historical journey at Silves Castle, a prominent Moorish fortress in the Algarve. Silves Castle is open to visitors year-round and the town of Silves itself is rich in history, offering additional attractions such as the Gothic Silves Cathedral and the Archaeological Museum. The castle is easily accessible by car, and it's recommended to visit by this means due to limited public transportation options.

Moorish Silves Castle

Once a symbol of imperial might, El Badi Palace in Marrakesh now stands as a striking ruin, echoing the glory of a bygone era. Commissioned in the late 16th century by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur of the Saadian dynasty, this vast palace was designed to showcase Morocco’s newfound wealth and power after the triumphant Battle of the Three Kings. Though centuries of dismantling have stripped away its lavish finishes, the remaining structure still commands awe, offering a compelling glimpse into the grandeur of Saadian architecture and ambition.

1. At the heart of El Badi Palace is its historic foundation, built between 1578 and 1593 as a royal statement of wealth, inspired by Moorish and Andalusian design.

2. Within its ruined walls, the former splendor of El Badi Palace is hinted at through traces of opulence—once boasting over 350 rooms adorned with Italian marble, Sudanese gold, and intricate Moroccan tilework.

The Palácio da Bolsa in Porto, a neoclassical marvel, embodies the city's rich history and cultural significance. Originally intended as a stock exchange, this 19th-century palace has evolved into a dynamic cultural center and a must-visit tourist attraction. From its inception on October 6, 1842, the palace has stood as a symbol of Porto's economic growth and architectural ingenuity. Top 5 things to see:

Commissioned by the Associação Comercial do Porto, its construction was a response to the need for a more substantial stock exchange facility. Guatemala

The spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal overrun by miles of  unspoiled jungle are extraordinarily rich in wildlife incl. the elusive jaguar. 🐆 

It’s one of the few UNESCO World Heritage sites that combines both cultural and natural richness and the 500+ sq km contains numerous remains of the Mayan civilization scattered across wetlands, savannah and tropical jungles teaming with birds and monkeys.

It was a thrilling experience to wander in a place that was one of the great cities of the world around 700 AD and wonder how people lived at that time. 

We went late afternoon to take advantage of the magical light falling on the structures and our guide, Daveed, was very helpful in highlighting the important sites and the life at that time. We enjoyed watching the sunset from the top of Temple IV. A perfect filming location for Yavin 4 in Star Wars.

After the sunset, we walked in the fading light to the spectacular Grand Plaza, relieved in Daveed’s assurance that the 🐆 is shy of humans.

Pyramids of Tikal

Granada, Spain, is home to the Monasterio de San Jerónimo, a stunning Renaissance monastery known for its exquisite cloisters, intricate altarpiece, and historical significance. Founded in the 16th century by the Catholic Monarchs, this monastery blends Gothic and Renaissance styles, making it one of the most architecturally impressive religious sites in Andalusia. It also holds a deep connection to Spanish history, as it was the final resting place of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the renowned general known as "El Gran Capitán."

1. The main cloister, surrounded by elegant archways and lush gardens, provides a peaceful retreat and showcases the harmony of Renaissance architecture.

2. Inside the church, an opulent altarpiece adorned with gold leaf and intricate carvings stands as one of the most spectacular in Spain, celebrating the military victories of El Gran Capitán.

3. The highly detailed frescoes and stucco work throughout the monastery reflect the artistic grandeur of the Spanish Renaissance.

4. The barrel-vaulted ceiling and stunning dome in the church create a breathtaking visual effect, particularly when sunlight filters through the windows.

Monasterio de San Jerónimo

The narrow, bustling alleys illuminated by rays of light filtering through makeshift coverings are a common sight in the Medina of Fes, where the blend of shadow and light creates a mysterious and historical ambiance, perfect for exploring on foot. It's an excellent depiction of daily life within the heart of Fes, showcasing the energy and the dense social fabric of this ancient city.

The contrast between the high-heeled boots that seem to be the footwear of choice for young women in wintertime and how Fes is rooted in time is a stark contrast of the past, present, and future that all exist. Marrakech’s medina had felt medieval, but it cannot compare with the proud, faded, crumbling, stately stance of Fes. The architecture is more intricate, the medersas older, the beliefs stauncher, and the passages more secretive.

I step aside just in time as I hear the chant – “Balak, balak” (watch out, watch out) – and a mule laden with fruits saunters past. Mules aren’t officially allowed, says my guide Karima, pointing to a sign at one of the doors of the medina. She’s taken it upon herself to quiz me about Arabic words. What is ‘door’ in Arabic? That’s easy, I say, pointing to the sign at one of the medina entrances, Bab ____ (pronounced not unlike the name ‘Bob’!).

The most memorable sound? Place Seffarine, a square known for its rhythmic orchestra: metal clanging on metal, non-stop throughout the day. Under the protection of a centuries-old tree, talented craftsmen hammer and sculpt copper pots and pans in cacophonous harmony. We sipped mint tea and people-watched, entranced, for a whole hour.

Fes Medina: Bab To Bab

The Bayraklı Smyrna Ruins reveal the foundations of ancient Smyrna, one of the earliest settlements in the İzmir region, dating back to 3000 BC. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into early urbanization, with remnants of ancient walls, houses, and temples.

Large festival on Kontraktovaya Square, located in historic Podil neighborhood of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. It is decorated  with an ice rink, food court and entertainment. Also you can enjoy views from the Ferris Wheel which is also nearby.

Azerbaijan

On a sunrise photo-walk, we are at Piazza San Marco. At 5AM, it’s empty, other than for a few pigeons, and a photo enthusiast like ourselves. And we run across - with tripods - to get to the Canal looking out towards San Giorgio Maggiore Island.

Our objective? To watch and photograph gondolas swaying in the canals of Venice. It’s perfect for long exposure shots. The gondolas and docks are lit up by street lights and the sky has the perfect blend of dark and light.

We then rush over to the vaporetto stand near Europa & Regina Hotel overlooking Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, for another Gondola scene (pictured) while the light is still good.

So, how many gondolas can you get into one frame?

We head out down the Grand Canal to the Rialto Fish Market. Some sellers are packing up after a good morning, but we’re able to get some great shots of everyday life. 

We walk back over Rialto bridge (great for photos of activity on the Canal) back to the hotel for breakfast.

How Many Gondolas?

The Accademia Gallery in Florence, renowned for housing Michelangelo's David, is a treasure trove of art, history, and culture. As the second most visited museum in Florence, it offers a collection that includes a $16 million dollar violin and significant works of the Renaissance and beyond​​. 1 -  As the focal point of the Accademia, Michelangelo’s David is a representation of strength, beauty, and human achievement. Created from a single block of marble, this masterpiece symbolizes the Renaissance ideals of humanism and is renowned for its anatomical precision and the portrayal of David before his battle with Goliath.

2 - The Hall of Prisoners features unfinished works by Michelangelo, known as "Prisoners" or "Slaves". These sculptures were intended for the tomb of Pope Julius II but were never completed. They offer a unique insight into Michelangelo's process, where the figures seem to be struggling to free themselves from the marble, embodying the concept of the "unfinished" in art​​​​.

3 - The Gipsoteca is a collection of plaster casts by the 19th-century sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini. This room showcases the creative process of sculpting, with numerous busts and models used by Bartolini and his students. The Gipsoteca represents the transition from idea to finished artwork, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the sculptor's workshop​​​​.

4 - The Florentine Gothic Gallery spans three rooms, focusing on art from the 13th and 14th centuries. It features Gothic altarpieces adorned with gold, reflecting the religious fervor of the Middle Ages.
