What is this?

Experience the Douro Valley by both river and hillside in this relaxed full-day trip combining scenic cruising, panoramic viewpoints, vineyard culture, and the lesser-known botanical traditions of the region. You begin aboard a silent, solar-powered boat, gliding through the heart of the valley while your hosts introduce you to local wines and the stories behind the producers who shape the landscape. Then step ashore for a short ride into the hills. Your destination is a working Quinta (estate) known not only for wine, but also for small-batch gin and culinary ingredients sourced directly from the land. Once there, you explore the vineyards, taste an estate-distilled gin tonic, and visit buildings on the property tracing the evolution of the property — from early viticulture to diversified production. After a picnic lunch in a romantic setting overlooking the Douro River, you drive towards a viewpoint over the hills, then finish at a stylish bar for final tastings of port wine.

What makes this unique?

This experience invites you to slow down and make the most of your day in the Douro. You'll arrive at a working estate via the river, just as people once did before roads reached the valley's secluded vineyards. Aboard the silent solar-powered boat, there is no engine to interrupt the journey—only birdsong and the gentle flow of the Douro. You’ll then explore a remarkable estate where botanical gardens and vines grow side by side. Carlos and Paulo have created an itinerary with time to linger, reflect, and simply enjoy the surroundings. They share stories of the region and introduce you to producers they know personally before giving you the freedom to enjoy a secluded picnic overlooking the river. Here, you're encouraged to savor the moment, sipping on estate wines and local produce while taking in the landscape around you. More photo opportunities arise later, when you visit a viewpoint and café with prime views of the valley, offering you a different perspective.

What is the profile of the host?

Carlos de Oliveira and Paulo Baptista have deep roots in the Douro Valley and Alvão Natural Park. As locals, they know the hidden roads, family-run estates, and stories that don’t appear on maps. Their mission is to reveal the authentic side of the Douro—beyond the usual tourist paths—through experiences that are personal, soulful, and grounded in place. With a passion for both tradition and sustainability, they blend cultural insight with refined hospitality, guiding you in their 100% electric Kombi through moments that reflect the true spirit of the region. From meaningful encounters with producers to quiet scenic corners known only to locals, Carlos and Paulo craft each journey with care and intention. Their storytelling, local knowledge, and respect for Douro’s heritage make them the ideal hosts for anyone seeking a deeper, more genuine connection to this remarkable landscape.

What to bring?

Comfortable walking shoes for uneven vineyard terrain, weather-appropriate layers (river breezes can be cool), sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a camera or smartphone.

Where is this located?

Where will we meet?

Carlos and Paulo are based in Vila Real, so it's the natural meeting point, letting them focus on the tour rather than driving hours to and from Porto (better for the environment too). From Porto, an Uber to Vila Real —1 hour — is simplest (book the night before). A pick-up in Pinhão or Régua station, or a Douro hotel, is also possible. They'll confirm the exact meeting point after booking.
