Andrea — an anthropologist and longtime resident of Coyoacán with family roots in Guerrero — begins with a brief walk near her studio in a neighborhood shaped by the encounter of colonial and Indigenous cultures — the roots from which mezcal emerged.

Back at her studio, you’ll taste three distinct mezcals from Guerrero, each carefully selected by Andrea. As you sip, she shares the cultural context behind each variety — from the agave species to traditional distillation methods. You’ll learn how to “kiss” the mezcal, as Spanish speakers say — a slow, attentive tasting style that reveals each glass’s unique character. Each mezcal is paired with locally inspired bites, drawing on the Guerrero heritage Andrea brings to both her cooking and design, and curated to enhance and echo the complexity of the spirits.

Andrea is an anthropologist by training, Master Mezcalier by trade, and a singer. She has fifteen years of experience promoting Guerrero State's mezcal culture and traditions, an area not typically associated with mezcal, but with plenty of flavors that are a joy to discover.

Andrea's own work in mezcal emerged from an extensive family history, where numerous memories and experiences have been intrinsically linked to the enjoyment of this spirit, always accompanied by good food and music. Since 2010, Andrea has been an integral part of the new narrative being woven around mezcal from Guerrero, actively contributing to its recognition and appreciation both nationally and internationally. 

Andrea's knowledge encompasses not only the specific culture of Guerrero, but extends to the diverse traditions that exist throughout the length and breadth of Mexico. She is certified as a Master Mezcalier and as a Leader in Food and Beverage Sensory Evaluation.

Your journey begins in Chioggia aboard a topa — a traditional flat-bottomed boat restored by your host, Damiano. Known as “Little Venice,” Chioggia has long lived in the shadow of its famous neighbor — but with its own traditions and tempo. As you glide down Canal Vena and under low bridges, daily life in the lagoon unfolds from a water-level view: fishermen docking, laundry hanging above the canals, neighbors chatting across boats. Damiano, who lives here, shares the rhythm of his hometown and points out the markers of its past and present.

From Chioggia, the topa crosses open water toward Pellestrina. Mussel farms stretch out across the lagoon; wooden stilt houses rise above the tide. Pellestrina sits on one of the barrier islands that protect the lagoon from the Adriatic — a working village shaped by water, with a low skyline and painted facades that glow under the sun. The return route traces slower canals with wide lagoon views.

When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.

Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Teos Ancient City is a peaceful archaeological site blending history and nature. Once a thriving cultural hub in ancient Ionia, it now offers well-preserved ruins, including a grand theater and the Temple of Dionysus. Its tranquil surroundings, shaded by olive groves, make it a serene spot for exploration.

Teos Ancient City

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

Croatia

This is a Gothic-Renaissance palace that once served as the seat of the Rector of the Republic of Ragusa. Today, it houses a museum displaying artifacts from Dubrovnik's history​​. Originally erected in the 15th century, this historical edifice has weathered disasters including explosions, fires, and earthquakes, notably being rebuilt after significant damages in 1435, 1463, and the devastating 1667 earthquake. Why visit:
  
1: Governance Core. Get into the heart of Dubrovnik's historical governance by exploring the Rector's office, administrative and council halls, and the courtroom. These spaces, preserved with their original grandeur, offer insights into the administrative mechanisms of the Dubrovnik Republic.

2: Within the atrium stands the monument to Miho Pracat, crafted by Piero Paolo Giacometti in 1638, honoring the revered sea captain and benefactor. As the only commoner bestowed with such an honor by the Republic, Pracat's legacy highlights the community's appreciation for civic contributions and philanthropy.

The palace's interior atrium and courtyard, celebrated for their Corinthian columns and the Baroque staircase added after the 1667 earthquake, become a stage for classical music concerts during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. 4: The Cultural History Museum housed within the palace walls showcases Dubrovnik's historical and cultural heritage through an extensive collection of artefacts, including period furniture, portraits, coins, and items from the 15th-century pharmacy "Domus Christi". 
 
To fully appreciate the palace's historical ambiance and rich exhibitions, consider visiting in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds.

The Jewel: Rector's Palace

Just a few kilometers south of Essaouira, Morocco, lies the sleepy village of Diabat, forever linked to the legendary musician Jimi Hendrix. Though his visit in 1969 was brief, Hendrix’s presence left a lasting mark on the area’s identity, blending the village’s laid-back atmosphere with a sense of rock ‘n’ roll mystique. Today, Diabat remains a peaceful retreat, known for its windswept beaches, local cafés, and rustic charm, drawing travelers and music lovers eager to connect with this slice of rock history.

1. Visit the “Hendrix House” ruins, believed by locals to have inspired the song “Castles Made of Sand”—though Hendrix’s connection remains more legend than fact, the site is a favorite for photos.

2. The nearby Bordj El Berod watchtower ruins offer a scenic backdrop and are often tied to Hendrix’s mythology, making them a must-see at sunset.

3. Diabat’s local cafés pay homage to Hendrix with murals, memorabilia, and laid-back vibes, perfect for enjoying a mint tea while soaking in the village’s history.

4. Explore the peaceful beaches and dunes, ideal for horseback riding, camel trekking, or simply relaxing with views of the Atlantic Ocean.

5. The village’s annual music events and jam sessions celebrate Hendrix’s legacy and the enduring connection between Diabat and the global music community.

Visitor Tip: The best way to reach Diabat is by foot, bicycle, or a short taxi ride from Essaouira. Visit during sunset for magical light over the ruins, and bring a camera to capture the iconic landscapes that inspired countless legends.

My enduring memory of this visit was watching a group of women unraveling their yarn 🧶 with hands moving so fast it was mesmerising to watch. 

Chinchero is a small Andean village near Urubamba. A handicrafts market is held here thrice a week - and it’s a great place to meet the local people. 

Or to haggle for textiles. Or vegetables. Or a 🐓. To learn how to distinguish between the various Andean tribes based on their different, wildly colorful hats. To catch a weaving demonstration at a local workshop. And marvel at how every color in the wool comes from a natural dye source. 

And my favorite: To make an old lady laugh by showing her pictures on my viewfinder of her own toothy grin from different angles.

Spinning a Yarn

Filopappou Hill, also known as the Hill of the Muses, is a serene and historic green space in Athens offering stunning views of the Acropolis and the city below. Rich in natural beauty and archaeological significance, the hill has been a beloved spot for locals and visitors alike. Named after the Roman-era monument to Gaius Julius Antiochus Filopappos, it combines lush walking paths, ancient ruins, and panoramic vistas for an unforgettable experience. 
1. The Filopappos Monument, a majestic Roman structure, crowns the hill, paying tribute to a benefactor of Athens and offering a historical highlight amidst the natural setting. 
2. The breathtaking views of the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the cityscape are among the best in Athens, especially at sunrise or sunset. 
3. Archaeological and historical sites, such as the ancient Prison of Socrates, add layers of intrigue and discovery to your visit. 
4. The peaceful walking trails, surrounded by pine trees and Mediterranean flora, create an ideal setting for a leisurely hike or a quiet escape from the city’s bustle. 
5. Local legends and historical significance lend the hill an air of mystique, as it has been a site of inspiration and reflection for centuries. 
Visitor Tip: Allocate 1.5 to 2.5 hours to explore the hill at a relaxed pace. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the uneven terrain. For the best experience, visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and enjoy softer light for photography.

Canada

Someone described #Churchill as “the warmest coldest tundra town”. It is a friendly, curious town. It also claims to have 300 days of northern lights. 

Basically, if you happen to be in Churchill on a clear night, prepare to wake up, dress up in layers (quickly), and be enthralled. 

Last Sunday night, when most had turned back in after what looked like an “average” aurora display, we waited and were rewarded with lovely green ribbons and curtains.
