Mexico

This off-the-beaten-track archaeological experience is designed for visitors to Mérida who want to explore lesser-known Maya heritage sites in the Yucatán, paired with a cenote visit.

You begin in the beautiful hills of the Puuc region at Oxkintok, an ancient Maya site known for its distinctive architecture, including a hieroglyphic stairway and underground tunnel system known as Tzat Tun Tzat, or “the Labyrinth,” which can sometimes be entered depending on conditions. Compared to better-known Puuc sites, Oxkintok remains quieter and less restored, allowing space to observe its layout and features without crowds.

From there, you continue to a cave, where ceramics and burials remain in situ. Zac explains how natural caves functioned within Maya culture — as ritual spaces, burial sites, and places closely connected to the natural and spiritual world.

The day concludes with lunch at a traditional restaurant, followed by time to swim at Cenote San Tito, before returning to Mérida.

Although Oxkintok lacks the single monumental pyramid found at larger Maya sites, its labyrinthine plazas, epic entrance arch, and underground structures are woven uniquely into the surrounding landscape. The place feels markedly different from more visited Puuc centers, offering the rare chance to spend time at a Maya city in  tranquility.

The visit continues at a group of cenotes located on land associated with a small, long-established Maya household. Access is private and requires prior coordination with the owners, something visitors aren’t able to arrange independently. This allows for a quieter, more respectful encounter with the landscape.

Zac’s experiences are shaped by the inclusion of both academic perspectives and local knowledge – “insider” and “outsider” voices. Alongside archaeological context, you hear how people who live in the region understand Maya heritage today — how these places are remembered, used, and talked about beyond textbooks and site signage.

The day continues with a meal centered on local Yucatec flavors, followed by time to swim in the crystal clear waters of a cenote. After a day of archaeological and cultural exploration, this stop offers a slower pace and a chance to rest in the natural landscape. You’ll have time to enjoy the setting, cool off in the water, and take in the surroundings before returning. 

Unlike cenotes in more heavily visited areas, the cenotes in this part of Yucatán are family-owned and privately managed. Access is quieter and more controlled, creating a calmer, more intimate experience than those found along standard tourist routes.

As you explore the site, you see a monumental arch, a hieroglyphic staircase, and sculptural elements that reflect its early development. Surrounding Oxkintok are dozens of small caves, many of which were used by the ancient Maya for ritual purposes.

The site itself sits in a unique landscape--the start of the hill country--and the views are some of the best in the peninsula. As a less-visited Maya site, Oxkintok offers the rare chance to slow down and spend time with the place rather than moving quickly between highlights. Experience Porto's historic tile heritage on this visual walking tour through the city's iconic azulejo façades. You begin downtown at São Bento railway station, where more than 20,000 azulejos depict key moments of Portuguese history. From there, you explore prominent religious buildings, including the beloved Capela das Almas, while also pausing along side streets to find lesser-known façades that reveal how this craft lives beyond monuments.

In Porto, azulejos are an essential part of the city’s history. Alongside an art historian, you trace the evolution of azulejo from devotional and narrative panels to 20th- and 21st-century ceramic works integrated into the modern city. The experience includes a visit to a local tile shop and a materials bank, where you gain insight into traditional techniques that are still used today. This is a sensory immersion in the heart of Cuglieri, an authentic Sardinian village rich in traditions and natural beauty. You will walk for about an hour through its narrow paved streets, breathing the scent of wild herbs while discovering hidden corners and breathtaking views from the Basilica of Santa Maria della Neve, the highest point of the town. After the botanic walk, you will experiment with cyanotype, an ancient sun-print technique to transform the collected herbs and flowers into a unique work of art, exploring a new connection between you and the soul of the place. The workshop is guided step by step by Eva, and you can bring your work home. After the creative experience, a taste adventure awaits you: the local panadas and a glass of wine.

You'll reconnect with nature and yourself by exploring the Sardinian landscape surrounding a traditional village and experimenting with your creativity through an ancient, sustainable artistic technique powered by the sun. The cyanotype technique, dating back to the 19th century, allows you to print on paper or fabric using sunlight and natural chemicals. An intense Prussian Blue emerges as the image gradually appears under the sun’s rays.

Botanical cyanotype does not require technical skills but unleashes your creativity through an intuitive interaction with Sardinian nature. All materials used are sourced from the surrounding landscape, collected during a walk through the stone-paved village and its nearby fields.

You will experience a profound connection with local nature, guided by a passionate plant enthusiast. The artistic process itself is contemplative, inviting you to handle natural materials with care while patiently waiting for the sun to imprint its magic on the canvas.

Grace is personally connected to porteño street artists, giving her a thorough comprehension of their techniques, motivations, and backstories. She has been present at several installations in Palermo Soho and maintains regular contact with the local street art community — the walk is peppered with anecdotes and over coffee, you will pore over visuals from her personal archive. Myanmar (Burma)

On a foggy morning as the sun rose over Lake Inle, my boatman took me to the rendezvous point deep inside Inle Lake. Three fishermen sat in their boats with little fires to warm them up. They had promised me the previous evening to do a demonstration of their fishing technique. 

The quintessential pose of the Inle fisherman involves standing at the end of the boat on one leg with the other wrapped around his oar. Inle is a shallow lake and standing wouldn’t let they see the reeds below, they explain. Plus they use their body to propel the boat, leaving their hands free to collect their fishing net. 

Then they throw the cone-shape nets into the water, pressing on it with their foot so it sinks to the bottom where the fish are and traps them in.

Philippines

This was my first time visiting Gigantes Islands, and I was struck by the raw beauty of its cliffs and crystal-clear waters that surround its secluded beaches. There are several islands that you can hop in to and my favorite one is what the locals call the “mini boracay” because the sand sure feels like that in Boracay. Other islands are as equally awesome like the Bantigue sandbar, and Cabugay. We also explored the local neighborhood and sure has its own interesting stories. For one, I discovered that due to the abundance of scallops in the island, there’s a neighborhood that stands on a land area that’s made up of scallop shells that is meters thick! Just imagine how much scallops shells that would’ve taken. There’s a lot to explore but if you just want something that’s relaxed, you can just have a good beer by the beach from sunset til night. 

Gigantes Islands

As you enter the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, and wander through its halls and chambers, know that you're walking in the footsteps of Doges and councilors who shaped the destiny of the Serenissima Republic. The palace stands proudly as a symbol of Venice's glorious past: Gothic grandeur meets Renaissance elegance. Key highlights:

1: The palace has opulent façades adorned with intricate carvings, statues, and frescoes. Originally a 9th-century structure, the palace underwent numerous renovations, especially under Doge Francesco Foscari in the 15th century, reflecting Gothic and Renaissance influences.

2: Inside, the Hall of the Great Council, built between 1340 and 1355, impresses with its size and harmonious proportions. Here, the greatest artists of their time, including Tintoretto and Veronese, contributed to its decoration. The highlight is Tintoretto's 'Paradise,' the world's largest oil painting, which fills the entire wall behind the Doge's throne.

3: The “Stairs of Gold” lead to the opulent state apartments. Only the Council and Doge's guests of honor were allowed to use these stairs. Each room, including the Doge's private quarters and the ornate Sala del Collegio, tells a story through its lavish decoration and artworks.

4: The council chambers, where policy decisions were made, are sumptuously decorated with paintings by Titian, Veronese, and other masters. 
5: The iconic Bridge of Sighs connects the palace to the prisons. The bridge got its name from the sighs of prisoners catching their last glimpse of Venice before their imprisonment.

The Doge's Palace

Antelope Canyon may be the most famous of Utah’s slot canyons,  but if you want to avoid the large crowds, go to Buckskin Gulch - harder to reach but possibly, more enjoyable.

Wire Pass, a gorge carved through the Cockscomb by Coyote Wash, is the most popular entry route into Buckskin Gulch. It takes 1.7 miles to get to the slot canyon from the trailhead. Wire Pass is short, less than half a mile, but its slot canyon is even more confined than Buckskin, and makes for spectacular photos.

Buckskin Gulch twists its way for another 13 surreal miles, but we turn back after a couple of miles to head back to the trailhead. We’ve stopped every few feet to capture various angles of the rock and light - and literally run out of time. You could certainly do a wonderful all-day hike here.

Through the Wire

Naples, Italy, is home to the legendary Castel dell’Ovo, the city’s oldest standing fortress, dramatically set on the small island of Megaride in the Gulf of Naples. Dating back to the 12th century, this historic castle offers breathtaking sea views, mysterious ancient halls, and a rich blend of myth and history. According to legend, the poet Virgil placed a magical egg ("uovo") within its foundations, and the city's fate was believed to be tied to its survival. Today, the castle is a must-visit site, perfect for exploring Naples’ maritime past and capturing stunning photographs.


1. At the top of the fortress, panoramic terraces offer stunning views of the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius, and the city skyline. The breathtaking scenery makes this a favorite spot for photography.

2. Inside the castle, ancient halls, courtyards, and stone passageways provide a glimpse into medieval military architecture. Walking through these timeworn spaces evokes the fortress's long and storied history.

3. Along the castle’s base, picturesque fishing boats and waterfront restaurants create a charming contrast to the imposing stone walls. This area, known as Borgo Marinari, is famous for fresh seafood and lively dining.

4. Throughout the year, temporary art exhibitions and cultural events are hosted within the castle’s halls, offering visitors an ever-changing experience alongside its historical charm.

5. Surrounding the fortress, a scenic promenade along the seafront makes for a perfect post-visit stroll, allowing visitors to take in the beauty of Naples’ coastline.
