What is this?

Experience Porto's historic tile heritage on this visual walking tour through the city's top landmarks and azulejo façades. Visit the Cathedral and the São Bento railway station where more than 20,000 azulejos depict key moments of Portuguese history. You’ll also discover some of the city’s most photographed spots, such as Capela das Almas, and venture down quieter streets to uncover lesser-known façades that reveal how this craft lives beyond monuments. In Porto, azulejos are an essential part of the city’s identity. Alongside an art historian, you trace the evolution of azulejo from devotional and narrative panels to 20th- and 21st-century ceramic works integrated into the modern city. The experience includes a visit to a local tile shop and a materials bank, where you gain insight into traditional techniques that are still used today. You also visit a historic mid-20th-century café decorated with original art, offering time to pause, reflect, and absorb the atmosphere of old Porto.

What makes this unique?

Azulejos are inseparable from Porto's identity, and this one-of-a-kind experience uses them to reveal both the city's history and its most iconic landmarks. Rather than simply stopping at famous façades, you'll discover how the stories depicted across churches, stations, cafés, and public buildings connect to one another, revealing the people, events, and traditions that shaped Porto over the centuries. Led by art historian Olga, you'll gain insights rarely found on conventional walking tours, learning to read tiles as historical documents and a depiction of an era. You also encounter discreet façades that reveal how azulejos continue to evolve. Olga gets you access inside a materials bank, where original azulejos are catalogued, preserved, and recirculated so historic buildings can be properly maintained and a working tile studio — where visitors can explore current-day tiles and even see artists painting them. Through this experience, you’ll see azulejo as living material culture.
