You continue to Plaza Principal and enter Palacio de Gobierno where Fernando Castro Pacheco’s dramatic murals trace Yucatán’s history. Ana Isabel Ramos is a designer, illustrator, artist, and children’s book author living in Lisbon, Portugal. A native of this city, Ana has made Lisbon her home after living on three different continents. Having first-hand experience of being a foreigner when living abroad, Ana knows how long it can take to get to know a new place and believes sketching is a shortcut to it.

She has been sketching all her life and as a daily practice since the beginning of 2021. This consistent routine has helped change her relationship with time and space. She believes sketching slows everything down and affords a different connection with the people around us and the place we’re at.

When she’s not taking you to the best spots in Lisbon to sketch, she works with women to help them connect to their inner wisdom and creativity to get clarity and live life more fully, embracing their artistic side. In 2024, she published her first children’s book “Livro do Não”, which she illustrated with embroidery.

Morocco

This is a moderately challenging private trek to the revered Muslim shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, starting from Imlil. This trek takes you through the traditional village of Aremd and ascends to 2350m (7710ft) at Sidi Chamarouch, positioned by a picturesque waterfall. 

While the shrine itself is not accessible to non-Muslims, the area around it offers a peaceful reflective spot for a picnic and stunning views across the Atlas Mountains and up towards the summit of Toubkal. Overall, the Sidi Chamarouch trek offers a profound glimpse into the Amazigh (Berber) spirituality, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural tapestry.  

On this trek, you'll follow the same scenic route both to and from Sidi Chamarouch as it's part of the trail leading to the Toubkal Summit. This Experience is of medium difficulty and may, therefore, be unsuitable for young children. We strongly recommend hiring a mule that children can ride if tired. See “What to Bring” for details.

This trek offers a serene yet adventurous journey to the Sidi Chamarouch shrine, a site of deep spiritual and cultural significance in the High Atlas Mountains. Known as the King of Jinns, this pre-Islamic marabout shrine is revered in local legend and spirituality, located near Imlil under the gaze of Mount Toubkal. 

The path features diverse landscapes—from lush terraced fields to traditional Berber villages—providing hikers of all levels a culturally rich experience. As you enter the Palazzo Ducale in Venice, and wander through its halls and chambers, know that you're walking in the footsteps of Doges and councilors who shaped the destiny of the Serenissima Republic. The palace stands proudly as a symbol of Venice's glorious past: Gothic grandeur meets Renaissance elegance. Key highlights:

1: The palace has opulent façades adorned with intricate carvings, statues, and frescoes. Originally a 9th-century structure, the palace underwent numerous renovations, especially under Doge Francesco Foscari in the 15th century, reflecting Gothic and Renaissance influences.

2: Inside, the Hall of the Great Council, built between 1340 and 1355, impresses with its size and harmonious proportions. Here, the greatest artists of their time, including Tintoretto and Veronese, contributed to its decoration. The highlight is Tintoretto's 'Paradise,' the world's largest oil painting, which fills the entire wall behind the Doge's throne.

3: The “Stairs of Gold” lead to the opulent state apartments. Only the Council and Doge's guests of honor were allowed to use these stairs. Each room, including the Doge's private quarters and the ornate Sala del Collegio, tells a story through its lavish decoration and artworks.

The Doge's Palace

Someone described #Churchill as “the warmest coldest tundra town”. It is a friendly, curious town. It also claims to have 300 days of northern lights. 

Basically, if you happen to be in Churchill on a clear night, prepare to wake up, dress up in layers (quickly), and be enthralled. 

Last Sunday night, when most had turned back in after what looked like an “average” aurora display, we waited and were rewarded with lovely green ribbons and curtains.

Dancing Dragons Across The Sky

A slow-paced night photo walk. On foot over odd shaped cobblestones. 

It does not start well as it starts raining even as we take a cab to Pantheon to meet our local photographer and lose a wallet in the cab. We miraculously get It back (another story) and we start our walk .. lethargic, in deference to summer, but still aware of art and life.

We walk from the Pantheon through Piazza Navona to Ponte Vittorio Emmanuel for views over to the Vatican.  The streets are wet, and Piazza Navona is teeming with Romans doing la passeggiata, an evening ritual I wish we could reapply in other cities. 

Later, joining the locals in their celebration of Summer along River Tiber (Lungo il Tivera Roma) well into midnight, it is easy to forget all about work and settle more definitively into a vacation frame-of-mind. 

Afterwards, a stroll to Campidoglio for priceless views of the illuminated Roman Forum, seems like just the thing to do.

To Rome, With Love
