This full-day bird watching excursion is led by a naturalist guide and conservationist who surveys the local population of avifauna and knows all the best spots to encounter resident and migratory species. After leaving San Pedro, you first drive south towards Jere Canyon (Quebrada de Jere) where tamarugo conebills, oasis hummingbirds, white-winged doves, and plain-mantled tit-spinetails dwell. Valeria Heindl is a passionate naturalist and conservationist who has resided in San Pedro de Atacama for over a decade. Just a few kilometers south of Essaouira, Morocco, lies the sleepy village of Diabat, forever linked to the legendary musician Jimi Hendrix. Though his visit in 1969 was brief, Hendrix’s presence left a lasting mark on the area’s identity, blending the village’s laid-back atmosphere with a sense of rock ‘n’ roll mystique. Today, Diabat remains a peaceful retreat, known for its windswept beaches, local cafés, and rustic charm, drawing travelers and music lovers eager to connect with this slice of rock history.

1. Visit the “Hendrix House” ruins, believed by locals to have inspired the song “Castles Made of Sand”—though Hendrix’s connection remains more legend than fact, the site is a favorite for photos.

2. The nearby Bordj El Berod watchtower ruins offer a scenic backdrop and are often tied to Hendrix’s mythology, making them a must-see at sunset.

Skala de la Ville

Naples, Italy, is home to the extraordinary Sansevero Chapel, a hidden gem of Baroque art and mystery, located in the heart of the historic center. This small yet breathtaking chapel is most famous for the Veiled Christ, a marble masterpiece by Giuseppe Sanmartino that astounds visitors with its delicate, lifelike depiction of Christ covered in a translucent shroud. The chapel, commissioned by the enigmatic Prince Raimondo di Sangro, is also filled with symbolic sculptures, intricate decorations, and scientific curiosities, making it one of the most fascinating attractions in the city.

1. In the center of the chapel, the Veiled Christ stuns visitors with its remarkable realism, as the finely sculpted marble veil appears almost weightless over Christ’s lifeless body. The level of craftsmanship makes it one of the most admired sculptures in the world.

2. Along the chapel’s walls, intriguing allegorical statues represent virtues such as Modesty and Disillusionment, each intricately carved with unique artistic techniques that showcase Baroque genius.

Veiled Christ

What does the southern end of the world look like? After five and a half l-o-n-g hours from Punta Arenas, out of the blue appears Hotel Explora Salto Chico - and it’s breathtaking. With a stunning, modern countenance, views-to-die-for of Torres del Paine (the Towers) and Cuernos del Paine (the Horns), and the sound of the Salto Chico waterfall as we linger over amazing food and excellent Chilean wine.

The Explora guides ensure they get us out of bed. My favorite experience - a day-long hike to Grey glacier. And when we get really close, our guides hop into a little boat to fetch thousand-year-old ice from the glacier for little drinks of Pisco Sour! 

Patagonia’s Parc Nacional Torres del Paine has picture postcard views everywhere. If you are a keen hiker, try the Circuit or the W. I stick to day hikes as a rule - if you are like me, try Grey Glacier, French Valley Glacier or Base of the Paine Towers.
