This exclusive experience offers rare access to the spiritual and musical traditions of Gnawa, hosted in an atmospheric riad or a zaouia—used by Gnawa as a sacred gathering place. It begins with a guided conversation led by a Maâlem (master musician) and his ensemble, tracing Gnawa’s fusion of West African, Berber and Islamic influences. You’ll learn about the spiritual meanings behind each song—how colors are chosen to express emotion—and the symbolism of traditional instruments like guembri, qraqeb, and tbel.

Built to trace Bordeaux’s role in the Atlantic slave trade, this historic walk begins in Place de la Bourse, continues to the Grand Théâtre, along Cours de Verdun and into Place des Quinconces, then reaches the quays.

While crossing the city center, the narrative spans the late seventeenth to the nineteenth century, when the city armed 508 expeditions linked to about 150,000 Africans deported to the Americas. Facades, street names and public art expose merchants, shipowners, and fortunes amassed through the exploitation of enslaved people.

At each stop Hubert unpacks how a voyage was outfitted, who financed it, where profits went and what awaited the enslaved across the ocean, then turns to Girondin deputies and abolition. A brief coffee stop softens the pace. On the riverfront, the focus shifts to memory today, from plaques to the statue of Modeste Testas, and to how the city confronts this painful past.

What sets this experience apart is immersion in a painful history that shaped Bordeaux. You'll transform discarded paper into handmade creations and experiment with vibrant local pigments like cochineal, Palo de Campeche, and Añil—dyes deeply woven into Mexico’s history, from ancestral craft to colonial exploitation. As you work with these natural colors, you'll gain insight into their ecological and cultural significance, connecting past traditions with modern sustainability.

Here, you'll be inspired by the natural fibers and materials around you, as well as your host’s expertise in art and design. This is a special opportunity to become acquainted with traditional natural dyes—sidelined by European colonialists—such as cochineal, Palo de Campeche, and Añil, working alongside practitioners dedicated to preserving sustainable textile crafts.

Paper Crafts & Ancestral Dyes

This experience is designed for a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6 people. All materials are included in the workshop, providing you with everything you need to create approximately 20 small handmade sheets of paper. You will also receive a small craft memento. We’ll provide a healthy snack along with coffee, tea, and water.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty—creativity can be messy! Don’t worry, we’ll also provide aprons and gloves if needed to keep you extra comfortable during the workshop. Please be aware that the workshop is located in an old CDMX building and access is via a steep staircase.

We will meet at the store "Donde Clara" on Calle Ámsterdam and then go through a secret passage to access the rooftop of the store. The access includes a steep metal staircase. 

This experience maker, Clara, is passionate about regeneration, craftsmanship, and preserving ancestral knowledge. She has spent years working with local artisans and creative communities, learning their techniques while exploring ways to merge creativity with environmental stewardship. Driven by a deep curiosity for self-sufficiency, Clara studies the origins of materials and the processes of cultivating and transforming fibers and dyes. She is fascinated by their social, economic, and environmental impact, believing that understanding them leads to more intentional, responsible creativity.

Clara shares hosting duties with her right-hand, Mariana, whose natural curiosity drives her exploration of material-focused creative practices. Together, they turn every workshop into an open space for experimentation, discovery, and rethinking how we create, and have collective knowledge about the city's related upcycling and craft scene which will no doubt inspire you to explore further.

Meet Pierre in the heart of Bordeaux and start your experience with a walk through the historic Saint-Michel district, where you’ll stop at a local café to get to know the neighborhood. Over coffee or tea, Pierre will share stories from his daily life and explain how his studio fits into this historic and lively area.

Back at the atelier, you’ll explore the origins of photography and learn about wet plate collodion—a 19th-century technique that uses glass or metal plates, chemical baths, and a large format camera. Pierre will guide you step by step as you coat, sensitize, expose, and develop your own image.

Watching your portrait come to life is a striking visual moment: deep contrasts, delicate textures, and a vintage feel that’s hard to find elsewhere. While your image slowly appears, Pierre shares family stories and his personal view of Bordeaux and photography. You can also choose to shoot outdoors and include a glimpse of the city in your portrait.

The uniqueness of this experience lies in the physicality of the process and the one-of-a-kind result. Wet plate collodion photography doesn’t aim to imitate the past—it uses an early technique to craft images that are singular, dense, and deeply present. Each portrait is shaped by light and chemistry, with a richness of tones and details that can’t be replicated.

Fixing Time in Saint-Michel

Pierre Wetzel is a Bordeaux-based photographer known for his dedication to wet plate collodion, a 19th-century photographic process that he has mastered over years of experimentation. He lives and works in the Saint-Michel district, where he runs his studio and regularly collaborates on community-based art projects that connect photography with local stories and social engagement.

Wander through the enchanting atmosphere of Milan’s Navigli district, where the shimmering waters of the Naviglio Grande reflect colorful canal-side houses and charming pedestrian bridges. As the day transitions into evening, the golden hour light bounces off the rippling canal, creating postcard-worthy images.

Emanuele, a professional photographer with a keen eye for urban storytelling, guides you through this vibrant setting. He offers hands-on tips for framing candlelit restaurant facades, glinting café windows, and couples strolling under lamplight. His expertise ensures your shots transcend simple documentation and speak to the soul of the district.

As twilight deepens, the Navigli come alive with local nightlife: lively bars, laughter spilling onto cobblestones, music drifting through open doorways. By the end, you’ll have a portfolio of images that reveal the romantic, electric poetry of Milan’s canals at their most captivating moment.

As daylight fades and the Navigli take on their most cinematic light, reflections ripple across the canals’ surfaces, doubling the facades, windows, and bridges in constantly shifting compositions. Nestled in the heart of Santorini’s charming Megalochori village, this immersive experience takes place in a restored 1950s cave house—dug into volcanic rock and full of character. Hosts Paula and George welcome you into their “stone kitchen” to roll up your sleeves and take part in a hands-on preparation of a classic Greek feast, side by side with your hosts.

Guided by Paula and George, you’ll chop, roll, stir, and season while learning the stories behind time-honored recipes, from tzatziki to tomato fritters to melt-in-your-mouth main dishes. The menu changes with the seasons, and so does the energy—it’s part cooking lesson, part gathering.

As the aromas of your creations fill the air, the session culminates in a communal meal enjoyed under a pergola. A Morning Photo Walk Ljubljana

In Santorini, we discover and fall in love with Vinsanto, the local dessert wine. So we drive up to Hatzidakis - a charming and intimate local winery - to check out the local grapes. The vines grow low to the ground and close to the road and we almost drive into them while looking for parking. 

The grapes are grown in an unusual way, not in arbors but low to the ground, in baskets made of vine stalks themselves. They are organic and are watered mostly by dew as the island has low water supply.

The tasting room is cave-like and we take home several bottkes of the small batch Vinsanto they produce.

The charming, well-preserved streetscapes of the heritage town in Old Lijiang Is perfect for getting lost  The winding streets lure you in - and shops selling Tiquanyin tea, handmade paper, musical drums, souvenirs and food vie for the attention of tourists. 

The Naxi people of Lijiang are proud, artistic and musically talented. It's a matriarchal society, one that I relate well to, and I enjoyed my interactions with the wise women I meet.

In the market square in Lijiang Old Town, groups of Naxi women get together to perform a few dances. There is no clear structure for their activity, and the women seem to be on their own schedule - some leave after a couple of dances, others hang around. Besides their traditional costume, what is common among them is their energy and zest for life.

Lost in Old Lijiang

The Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Agrigento, Sicily, is a breathtaking testament to Greek civilization in Italy. Spanning over 1300 hectares, this archaeological marvel showcases some of the best-preserved Ancient Greek structures in the world, enveloped in a landscape of olive trees and almond blossoms. Here are the no-miss highlights:

1: The site's most iconic structure is the Temple of Concordia, one of the best-preserved Doric temples in existence. Erected in the 5th century BC, it stands as a stunning example of Greek architectural prowess and harmony.

2: Another remarkable structure is the Temple of Hera Lacinia, located at the eastern end of the site. Although partly ruined, it offers an evocative glimpse into the past, especially enchanting at sunset when its columns are bathed in golden hues.

Ancient Greece in Sicily

Faroe Islands

I’m seduced by the untouched beauty and drama of the Faroe Islands. Driving into Tórshavn, I witness a rare Faroese sight.

The ocean is bright red. The beach is packed with onlookers. It’s a grindadráp, a pilot whale hunt. Heavily regulated, it’s being carried out with process perfected over millennia. A local couple points out their son to me, he is on one of the boats — “unless we send a boat, we won’t get our share of the whale meat.”

When a school of pilot whales is sighted, boats gather around and slowly drive them towards the chosen bay or beach, for it’s illegal to kill the whales in the open sea. This time, there are about two hundred of them. Every bit of them will be consumed or used — and none can be sold.

I’m shocked, outraged, fascinated, caught up in the excitement and terribly conflicted. As a traveler, I respect — and seek to understand — culture and tradition. And the Faroese are holding on to this one — as it symbolizes for them their relationship with the sea.

Agora Open Air Museum

The Vasari Corridor, an elevated kilometer-long passageway, is a symbol of the Medici family's influence in Renaissance Florence. Commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici in 1565, this corridor connects the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace, offering a unique journey through Florence's history, art, and architecture. Top 5 reasons to take this stroll:
1 - Designed by Giorgio Vasari, the corridor was constructed to allow the Medici family to move freely and safely between their residence in Palazzo Pitti and the government headquarters in Palazzo Vecchio. This architectural marvel, completed in just five months, includes small windows overlooking the streets and the Arno River. 

2 - As you walk through the corridor, you are surrounded by an exquisite collection of artwork, mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a unique collection of artists' self-portraits. 3 - The corridor has witnessed both tragic and triumphant moments in Florence's history. 4 - The section over Ponte Vecchio offers breathtaking views of the Arno River and the city. This panoramic view was reportedly so admired by Hitler that he ordered Ponte Vecchio to be spared from bombing during World War II​​.
