What is this?
Discover two of Vila Real’s oldest traditions in an experience celebrating the region’s food and pottery heritage.
You’ll begin at a century-old bakery, where you’ll step behind the scenes to see regional pastries made using recipes passed down through generations. You’ll sample local specialties, including one inspired by the iconic Bisalhães black pottery.
Then continue to the village of Bisalhães, where you’ll gain rare access to one of Portugal’s most endangered crafts, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
In a working atelier, one of the few remaining master potters will demonstrate the techniques behind the region’s distinctive black clay before guiding you as you shape your own piece at the wheel. On rare occasions, if timing and weather allow, you may also witness the traditional open-air firing. Your completed piece is then fired, carefully packaged, and shipped to your home — a tactile memory of Douro, shaped by your own hands.
What makes this unique?
This experience introduces you to the families preserving two of Vila Real's oldest traditions. You'll begin by meeting the owner of a century-old bakery, whose great-grandmother rescued recipes from a local convent, ensuring pastries such as the Crista de Galo and Covilhete remain part of the city's identity today.
The journey then continues to Bisalhães, where only a handful of master potters still practice the black clay tradition, inscribed on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2016. Rather than observing from a distance, you'll work alongside one of these artisans, learning techniques passed down through generations as you shape your own piece. More than a workshop, this is a direct connection to a living cultural practice shaped by place, patience, and touch—one whose future depends on the people who continue to practice it and those who choose to support it.
What is the profile of the host?
Carlos and Paulo are lifelong residents of Vila Real with close ties to the region's artisans and family-run businesses. They accompany you throughout the day, introducing you to the people shaping the region's most enduring traditions.
At the bakery, you'll be welcomed by the owner, whose family has safeguarded centuries-old convent recipes.
Later, in Bisalhães, you'll meet one of the few remaining master potters from a family lineage of black-clay artisans. Trained from childhood, they will guide you through each stage of the craft, from preparing the clay to shaping it on the wheel, while sharing stories of the community oven (soenga), the village's way of life, and the significance of UNESCO's recognition. Their warmth, expertise, and dedication transform the workshop into an intimate encounter with one of Portugal's most fragile living traditions.
What to bring?
Comfortable, casual clothing you don’t mind getting dirty, or a light apron, and a camera or smartphone.
