The Acropolis of Athens is more than the ruins we see today—it’s a palimpsest of history shaped by Byzantines, Franks, Ottomans, and modern Greeks. Yet much of this past has been erased.

While exploring the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and all the other standing monuments, you’ll also uncover what no longer stands: the Frankish Tower, the Ottoman village, the mosque and other lost fortifications. These structures weren’t just casualties of time; they were deliberately removed to align with a national narrative shaped after the modern state’s foundation.

This experience shifts the focus from what remains to what has been erased, revealing how history gets curated. It challenges the conventional view of the Acropolis, exposing the political choices that defined its present form. By retracing what was lost alongside what endures, it offers a deeper understanding of power, memory, and the narratives that shape our perception of the past. The highlight of our tour is a visit to a renowned restaurant set in an Art Nouveau-style apartment. Consuming Architecture is an experience that will linger long after your holiday is over.

We begin our journey with a glass of vermouth or cava, a Spanish sparkling wine, in a historic ultramarinos in the Eixample, recently named one of the most beautiful shops in the world. Here, we'll discuss the development of the area and its singular architectural style. From there, we stroll to another historic venue, nestled in a first-floor modernista apartment. It boasts an outdoor terrace, perfect for further drinks and engaging conversation.

The final stop of the tour is a real gem – a singular modernista building with a breathtaking entrance. Here, after the guide has shown them the premises and explained its fascinating history, guests (without the guide) will enjoy a three-course meal with wine in a sumptuous private dining room.

For João, the true essence of the Algarve lies in its sensory landscape and the stories attached to it.
“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

The Charming Soul of Lisbon

Jamaica

A Black River Safari took us into the heart of the largest freshwater wetland ecosystem in Jamaica, the Great Morass at the Black River. This area, spanning 125 square miles, is a haven for biodiversity, featuring giant mangrove trees and an array of swamp animals, including the endangered American crocodile, protected under the Wildlife Protection Act in Jamaica. 

The guides spotted crocodiles of various sizes in the water and along the riverbanks, including baby crocodiles. Also several bird species call this area home. As we glided along the river, we saw snowy egrets, great egrets, and great blue herons, among other bird species.

The River teems with mangrove trees, ferns, and water lilies. The mangroves are particularly noteworthy, with some species having roots extending 40 feet downward. A curious aspect of the Black River is its dark color, which becomes more noticeable as you move upstream. This is due to the peat soil at the bottom of the river, which, despite giving the river its dark appearance, keeps the water clear. 

If you're interested in learning more about the crocodiles, many tours conclude with a visit to the Crocodile Nursery, where young and injured crocodiles are cared for until they are ready to return to the wild.

Mangroves + Crocodiles

The Verona Arena is a Roman amphitheater located in the heart of Verona, Italy. Built in the 1st century AD, this ancient structure is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world and continues to serve its original purpose as a venue for entertainment. The Arena is renowned for its impressive size and acoustics, and it has been a symbol of Verona’s rich history and cultural heritage for nearly 2,000 years.

1 - Ancient Architecture: The Arena’s well-preserved Roman architecture is a marvel in itself. With its massive stone arches and tiered seating, it once held up to 30,000 spectators. Walking through its grand entrances and up the stone steps, visitors can imagine the excitement of ancient Roman games and gladiatorial battles that once took place here.

2 - Opera Performances: One of the most iconic experiences at the Verona Arena is attending an opera under the stars. Every summer, the Arena hosts the Verona Opera Festival, a world-renowned event that draws top performers and music lovers from around the world.

The Verona Arena

Portugal’s Rota Vicentina is a spectacular network of coastal and inland hiking trails along the rugged southwestern coastline of the Alentejo and Algarve regions. Stretching for over 750 km (466 miles), these well-marked trails pass through stunning cliffs, wild beaches, rolling sand dunes, and charming fishing villages, making it one of Europe’s most breathtaking long-distance walking routes. The Rota Vicentina is divided into two main paths: the Fishermen’s Trail, which hugs the dramatic coastline, and the Historical Way, which winds through cork forests, rural farmland, and traditional villages.


1. The Fishermen’s Trail, one of the most scenic routes in Europe, follows clifftop paths, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and hidden coves.

2. The Historical Way takes hikers inland through rolling hills, cork oak forests, and remote villages, showcasing the authentic culture of the Alentejo.

3. Wild beaches and dramatic rock formations, including Praia da Amália, Praia do Malhão, and the famous Cabo Sardão, where storks nest on sea cliffs.

4. Charming fishing villages, such as Zambujeira do Mar, Vila Nova de Milfontes, and Odeceixe, offering cozy guesthouses and fresh seafood along the route.

5. A rich ecosystem, home to rare birds, wildflowers, and diverse marine life, making the route perfect for nature lovers and photographers.

Visitor Tip: The best time to hike is spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) for mild weather and fewer crowds. Pack sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water, and sun protection, as some sections have little shade. For a shorter experience, try a one-day walk between villages along the Fishermen’s Trail.

Rota Vicentina Coastal Walks

Located in the heart of Istanbul’s historic peninsula, Sultanahmet Park offers one of the city’s most iconic and photogenic settings. Nestled between two architectural giants—the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque—the park serves as both a peaceful resting place and a central point for exploring the city’s rich Byzantine and Ottoman heritage. With its symmetrical fountains, tree-lined paths, and flower beds that change with the seasons, the park offers locals and travelers alike a moment of calm surrounded by centuries of history.

1. In the center of Sultanahmet Park, a circular fountain draws visitors toward stunning panoramic views of both the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, especially magical at sunrise or twilight.

2. Throughout the park, well-kept walking paths and benches invite visitors to slow down, relax, and take in the atmosphere of Istanbul’s most historic district.

3. With tulips blooming in spring and colorful flower beds year-round, Sultanahmet Park adds a vibrant and natural contrast to the surrounding stone domes and minarets.

4. The park’s location makes it a convenient meeting point or rest stop between visits to nearby landmarks like the Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace, and the Hippodrome.

5. Street vendors often set up around the edges of the park, selling simit, roasted chestnuts, or fresh pomegranate juice—offering small local flavors to enjoy while admiring the view.

Tip: Arrive early in the morning for the most peaceful experience and unobstructed photo opportunities between two of Istanbul’s most legendary monuments.

Sultanahmet Park

Ethiopia

In Lalibela, I am moved by the devotion and faith of pilgrims who have walked for weeks, and hundreds of miles across the country, to celebrate Genna - Ethiopia’s Christmas - on January 7. Here, the year is 2011, since Ethiopia still observes a pre-Julian calendar. I am immediately taken in by the idea of being 7 years younger, albeit for a fleeting moment.

Pilgrims arrive early - between midnight to 5 am -  to get a prized standing spot inside the tiny but iconic Biete Gyorgis. As I watch pilgrims read from their bibles, often from inside their shroud, using a candle or torch, I realize I’ve never seen such fervor in worship.

By 6:30 am, Biete Giyorgis, the iconic rock-hewn church of Lalibela, has no more standing space, so these pilgrims huddle outside and around trees and pray from their copies of the Bible, guided by the chanting from the church, that fills the air with spirituality. It’s poetic and beautiful.

Salta’s old town center has rich history and a living folk culture. Colonial facades, neo-classical architecture, church with bell tower and crowds of happy people meeting up with friends before dinner.

My night ends at a peña (music/social club) where local musicians perform songs and the audience sings and dances along.

[💃] 
There’s the chacarera, a lively partner dance with much stomping. During zamba, couples circle each other, waving white handkerchiefs. Finally in the cherished malambo, a male gaucho performs his best steps to show off his strength and boldness to upstage other competitors. Then the dancers go around the room looking for partners from among the audience, and it’s fascinating to see the eagerness of the crowd to join in.

There’s a lot of Fernet-and-Coke - or the local Torrontés - on the tables to go along, and soon everyone is singing to the chorus. Their spirit is infectious.

Folklore Movement

Once a symbol of imperial might, El Badi Palace in Marrakesh now stands as a striking ruin, echoing the glory of a bygone era. Commissioned in the late 16th century by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur of the Saadian dynasty, this vast palace was designed to showcase Morocco’s newfound wealth and power after the triumphant Battle of the Three Kings. Though centuries of dismantling have stripped away its lavish finishes, the remaining structure still commands awe, offering a compelling glimpse into the grandeur of Saadian architecture and ambition.

1. At the heart of El Badi Palace is its historic foundation, built between 1578 and 1593 as a royal statement of wealth, inspired by Moorish and Andalusian design.

2. Within its ruined walls, the former splendor of El Badi Palace is hinted at through traces of opulence—once boasting over 350 rooms adorned with Italian marble, Sudanese gold, and intricate Moroccan tilework.

3. Visitors are drawn to the palace’s massive central courtyard, where a large reflecting pool and sunken orange gardens create a tranquil oasis amid the stone ruins.

4. From the upper terraces of El Badi Palace, panoramic views stretch across the Marrakesh medina, offering a stunning perspective of the city’s rooftops and Atlas Mountains in the distance.

5. Adding to the atmosphere of El Badi Palace are the resident storks, who nest on the palace walls and lend a serene, timeless feel to this open-air monument.

Tip: For softer light and fewer crowds, visit in the early morning or late afternoon.
