This is a day trip journey from Guadalajara to the Western Sierra, focused on coffee, artisans, myth, and mountains, guided by an anthropologist, exploring people and place. 

You leave Guadalajara early, tracing the road west into the Western Sierra — scenic landscapes of red earth and pine slopes. Your first stop is Amacueca. Here, farmers show how cherries are hand-picked, pulped, roasted — the scent is warm and nutty. You taste a cup brewed on the spot.

The route continues to Tapalpa, a Pueblo Mágico of whitewashed walls and timber balconies. You wander its plaza and visit selected artisans. 

Later, at the Enigma Valleys, giant stones stand scattered. Alejandro shares local legends — of spirits, giants, storms — that have made this site both sacred and mysterious. You understand why these boulders are more than geology: they’re reminders of endurance.

It’s a full day — mountain air, conversation, cultural heritage, and a sense that Jalisco belongs to those who live its rhythm. 

Alejandro expertly connects what you see to the historical and cultural context: how geography shaped coffee in Amacueca, why Tapalpa’s craft traditions endure, and how Enigma Valleys reveal belief systems.

In Amacueca, you join growers for tastings and roasting demonstrations, you learn what the grower looks for when judging a good harvest, how scent signals readiness. In Tapalpa, Alejandro introduces artisans he selects for their quality, people he has long trusting relationships with — you see leather tanned with natural oils, clay that fires to a deep rust tone, maguey fibers hand-braided for strength. At the Enigma Valleys, surrounded by stones worn smooth by time, Alejandro recounts oral histories linking the rocks to ancient storms and deities, legends and spiritual significance, while you stand amid the same winds that shaped them.

This experience is about exchange — between you and the people, communities, landscape and story — all grounded in Jalisco’s living culture.

The first stop is Amacueca, a tranquil highland town nestled in Jalisco’s Western Sierra known for its pitayas –(cactus fruit), centuries-old Catholic heritage (the oldest Catholic temple and convent in western Mexico), and emerging coffee culture. Here, faith, agriculture, and artistry have intertwined for generations.

You’ll walk through the cobbled streets to a family-run coffee farm and roastery, where the scent of roasting beans mingles with the mountain air. Here, you explore small-scale coffee plots, learn about hand-picking and roasting, and see how altitude and microclimate influence flavor.  Of course, you’ll sit for a cup brewed fresh from the local roast.



The Western Sierra de Amacueca region produces shade-grown arabica coffee with mild acidity and chocolate/nutty notes. It is one of western Mexico’s most authentic coffee regions, its small farms overshadowed by Jalisco’s more famous agave fields but no less remarkable in craftsmanship. In this stop, you step directly into that continuity — from colonial spirituality to contemporary agricultural artistry.

Your guide, an anthropologist, ties these threads together: how the first missionaries built the convent that still anchors the town; how Catholic rituals merged with indigenous cycles of rain and harvest; and how today’s farmers use traditional shade and hand-roasting techniques to sustain biodiversity and quality.

The route winds toward Tapalpa, a Pueblo Mágico whose name means “land of colors.” Set among pine forests and rolling valleys, Tapalpa is known for its colonial streets lined with whitewashed walls and red-tiled roofs, its balconies bright with geraniums, and the scent of wood smoke drifting through cobbled lanes.

Here, you walk the town’s narrow streets with your host, meeting local artisans and craftspeople who work with leather, clay, and woven maguey fiber — materials drawn directly from the surrounding land. As you pause for lunch at a local fonda, you’ll sample Tapalpa’s mountain specialties — and between bites, hear how food, faith, and family life sustain this community’s rhythm. 

Tapalpa was one of the first towns in Mexico to receive Pueblo Mágico status (2002) — an honor recognizing not only its preserved architecture but its living culture.

Unlike destinations where “magical town” has become a brand, Tapalpa still feels intimate and local. Its craft markets, run by family workshops, continue to use centuries-old methods — tanning with natural oils, hand-spinning maguey, and woodcarving with regional pine.

Crafts in a Pueblo Mágico

The road from Tapalpa climbs gently toward the Valle de los Enigmas, also known as the Valle de las Piedrotas — this is the highlight of the tour. Here, colossal monolithic Giant Stones stand as silent guardians in a vast natural amphitheater, inviting visitors to marvel at their intriguing shapes and legends. Each is the size of a house, weathered into shapes that seem both natural and intentional.

No one knows for certain how these stones arrived here. Geologists suggest ancient volcanic activity — basalt expelled and sculpted by erosion. Locals tell other stories: that the rocks were meteorites, or that giants once played here, leaving the stones as toys abandoned mid-game.

As you walk among the stones, Alejandro shares both science and legend — oral histories passed down through local families, theories from archaeologists, and the meanings that still endure in the stories told today. It’s an arresting final stop — a conversation between land, myth, and time itself.

The Enigma Valleys encapsulate what makes the Western Sierra distinct — a landscape where myth and geology intertwine, and where formations carry both a scientific explanation and a spiritual echo.

Spain

Toledo is one of Spain’s most historically significant cities, with roots dating back to a pre-Roman settlement. It was once the capital of Spain and remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site today. Over the centuries, it became known as the City of Tolerance—or the City of Three Cultures—due to the coexistence and influence of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian communities.

This private walking tour begins with a panoramic car tour of the city, followed by visits to monuments that bring Toledo’s layered history to life. Highlights include the Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes, a premier example of 15th-century architecture; the Synagogue of El Tránsito, a striking example of Jewish presence and power in medieval Toledo; and the Cathedral of Toledo, the Primate Cathedral and a defining symbol of Catholic influence expressed through Gothic art and architecture.

This experience traces the historical layers of Córdoba. It begins at the only Mosque–Cathedral in the world, one of the most complex religious monuments in Europe, where Umayyad Islamic architecture and later Christian interventions coexist within a single structure. From there, you cross the Roman Bridge, a vital link since antiquity that still defines the city’s relationship with the Guadalquivir.

The walk continues into the Jewish Quarter, whose narrow, irregular streets preserve the medieval urban fabric. In the Synagogue, one of only three surviving medieval synagogues in Spain, you learn how it endured. Along the way, you pass historic courtyards, civic buildings, and lesser-known sites that reveal daily life beyond monumental landmarks.

At the entrance of the Maimonides Hotel (10 Torrijos Street), next to the Mosque-Cathedral. This is a ten minute taxi or 25 minute walk from the Córdoba train station.

You can travel by car from Seville and Málaga in an hour and a half. Córdoba can also be reached by train within 45 minutes-1 hour from both. Toni can advise you on travel options, but transport to/from Córdoba are not included.

Portugal

Experience Porto's historic tile heritage on this visual walking tour through the city's iconic azulejo façades. You begin downtown at São Bento railway station, where more than 20,000 azulejos depict key moments of Portuguese history. From there, you explore prominent religious buildings, including the beloved Capela das Almas, while also pausing along side streets to find lesser-known façades that reveal how this craft lives beyond monuments.

In Porto, azulejos are an essential part of the city’s history. Alongside an art historian, you trace the evolution of azulejo from devotional and narrative panels to 20th- and 21st-century ceramic works integrated into the modern city. The experience includes a visit to a local tile shop and a materials bank, where you gain insight into traditional techniques that are still used today. You then wrap up at a historic mid-20th-century café decorated with original tiles, offering time to pause, reflect, and absorb the atmosphere of old Porto.

You explore how tiles have framed Porto’s streets, stations, cafés, and neighborhoods for centuries, forming part of the city’s collective memory. Rather than presenting tiled façades as a list of isolated highlights, this walk narrates how the tradition developed. Framed by an art historian, the experience follows a coherent arc: from monumental storytelling at São Bento to public, street-facing devotional panels and modern ceramic compositions by living artists. You also encounter discreet façades that reveal how azulejos continue to evolve.

The experience also examines how this heritage is sustained. Olga gets you access inside a materials bank, where original azulejos are catalogued, preserved, and recirculated so historic buildings can be properly maintained. A visit to a tile shop — where visitors can explore and purchase tiles — shows how production continues today. The walk concludes in a historic tiled café, shifting the focus to interior azulejo as living material culture.

Chile

Hosted by an architect, this full-day excursion analyzes Santiago’s preserved pre-colonial grid and the strategic placement of a city within a natural basin. You'll see the cathedral, Plaza de Armas, and a network of covered pedestrian galleries cutting through the city blocks, while discussing the eclecticism of the historic downtown. The itinerary continues at the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (built in 1972 and renovated in 2009 after a national competition), Santa Lucía Hill (the founding site of colonial Santiago), the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art (designed by Smiljan Radic), and La Moneda Cultural Center.

Diego Baloian is an architect holding a degree from the Universidad Finis Terrae and a Master's in Cultural Heritage from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). As the founding partner at DBG Architecture and Massantiago, his work focuses on architectural design, the restoration of heritage buildings, and urban planning. He has led and participated in projects and seminars in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Switzerland, and Hungary. 

Diego has also organized conferences and exhibitions on Latin American architecture in collaboration with Guiding Architects Network, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETH).

Morocco

This is an exhilarating and demanding ascent to the Toubkal Refuge, starting from the village of Imlil. This demanding trek spans a total climb of 2500 meters (8,202 feet) to 3207 meters (10,522 feet) at the refuge, suitable for those with good fitness levels but does not require technical climbing skills. 

The trek passes the spiritual landmark of Sidi Chamarouch, a Muslim pilgrimage spot located in a very scenic place, before the steep climb to the refuge, set just below the summit of Mount Toubkal. Here, trekkers can enjoy a well-earned picnic lunch while taking in panoramic views of the surrounding High Atlas Mountains. 

This trek offers a challenging yet rewarding experience, providing both a sense of accomplishment and spectacular scenic beauty. This full-day trek typically taking about 8 hours. However, the pace depends on your comfort, and Ahmed's team will ensure the group moves at a speed that suits you.
