What is this?

In Mérida, beneath the arcades and close to the hum of market vendors, this fully private, four-hour walking experience begins at Plaza Grande. There is time to take in the Cathedral and the historic center before continuing into the bustling markets of San Benito and Lucas de Gálvez. Along the way, your expert guide shares insight into daily life in Mérida, key moments in the city’s history, and the cultural traditions that continue to shape the city today. Designed as a deeper introduction to Mérida’s local life, history, and gastronomy, this experience unfolds across 12 curated stops, combining storytelling, cultural context, and tastings. You begin with a refreshing agua fresca, then sample a range of dishes that reflect the richness of Yucatán cuisine: panuchos and salbutes, empanadas de chaya with queso de bola, fresh tortillas, cochinita pibil, lechón, gringa de pastor, local fruit, and an artisanal paleta. Vegetarian guests can enjoy dishes such as sopa de lima or papadzules.

What makes this unique?

Throughout the route, your guide explains how Mérida’s cuisine and customs have been shaped by layered histories and local ways of life. The experience goes beyond tasting to offer a closer understanding of how markets, family traditions, ingredients, and everyday rituals continue to define the city. In addition to culinary stops, it includes cultural moments that reveal other facets of Yucatán’s living heritage, including an introduction to the Ma Kech tradition. There is also a stop to learn about Xtabentún, a regional liqueur with deep cultural roots, offering further insight into the beliefs, ingredients, and traditions that surround Yucatán’s food and drink culture today. Because this is a private experience, it allows you to move at your own pace, linger where your interest is strongest, and enjoy a well-considered route through Mérida’s historic center and main markets. This is a thoughtful immersion into the city’s gastronomy, history, and living culture.

What is the profile of the host?

Daniel has been creating culinary experiences in Mérida since 2017, developing a deep understanding of how markets, family-run eateries, and regional ingredients reveal the history, identity, and everyday life of a place. His work is rooted in the belief that food offers one of the clearest ways to understand Yucatán: through the people behind it, the customs that shape it, and the stories carried in each dish. While Daniel shapes the vision, routes, and standards behind each experience, he shares hosting with a small team of trusted local guides. Anette, Fernando, Laura, Marcos, and Sylvie bring local expertise, cultural pride, and genuine warmth. All have lived in Mérida for many years and have a strong connection to its neighborhoods and daily life. Together, Daniel and his team combine thoughtful route design, grounded storytelling, and close relationships with vendors to create experiences that go far beyond standard sightseeing.
