Guided by Valeria’s local insight and cultural expertise, your day begins with hotel pick-up in Valencia city, followed by a brief stop at the iconic City of Arts & Sciences, a major landmark reflecting the city’s contemporary identity.

From there, you travel to Albufera Natural Park, a protected landscape of rice fields, wetlands, and tranquil waters. Weather permitting, you enjoy a guided visit around the park before meeting a local boat owner for a relaxing ride across the lagoon.

In this unique lakeside setting, you are served an authentic Valencian paella, freshly prepared, allowing you to experience the dish in the place where it originated. After the experience, you return comfortably to Valencia.

Albufera Natural Park lies ten kilometers south of Valencia, a protected wetland where rice fields meet open water behind the Dehesa del Saler sandbar. Paella’s origin stories point to this setting: farmers cooking rice in the fields with what the land provided. Eating paella beside the lagoon is a world of difference from eating it in town. Closeby, we will have a lunch at Trindade, a freemason inspired tiled restaurant, once a brewery and before, a convent.

The day commences with a captivating morning hike led by a specialized nature guide to Cava Carosello atop Monte Alveria, revealing the historical roots of Noto. Participants have the opportunity to swim in the Asinaro River and discover the natural plunge pool, Urvu. Following the hike, guests are welcomed to a local almond farm, where experts in almond production offer Almond Milk and a light lunch crafted from locally sourced ingredients. The tour commences on foot at the northern end of the Gothic quarter (near La Rambla) and finishes at the southern end. You’ll weave your way through small streets and squares and past major monuments such as the cathedral and old Roman walls.

Carnevale in Mamoiada (February 7 and 9, 2027) immerses you in the rich culture of Sardinia’s festivities. The decorated streets of this ancient village come alive with haunting rhythms of cowbells, hypnotic movements of dancers, and tradition preserved through centuries: it’s a celebration of history, mythology and community.

THIS EXPERIENCE IS LIMITED TO FOUR PARTICIPANTS ON 7 and 9 FEBRUARY, 2027.

You will watch the Mamuthones, cloaked in black sheepskins with grotesque wooden masks, moving in slow, ritualistic dances. Meanwhile, the Issohadores, with vibrant red shirts and white masks, wield lassos to capture the dancers (and spectators!).

The soroban, or Japanese abacus, has been used in Japan for centuries and remains a living tool for calculation, concentration, and memory. In recent years, its popularity has grown again as people seek more tactile alternatives to digital methods.

In this experience, you visit a premier soroban academy near Tokyo that has a reputation for training students who compete at a high level in national soroban competitions. At the academy, you join the class itself, learning the techniques of this mental conditioning tool alongside young students and discovering how this training sharpens concentration, memory, and speed. 

As part of the visit, you assemble your own soroban before class and use it during the lesson, so the experience can continue later as a daily practice.

Madrid to Porto Between Lands

A road trip itinerary from Madrid to Porto via Toledo and Galicia, blending culture, drives, locals.

The riad sends a donkey called Couscous to meet us and pick up the luggage; the taxi will only go so far into the medina. 

As our merry procession winds through the narrow, confusing alleyways, we panic slightly. No problem, says a djelleba-clad staff member, you’ll have a map and cell phone to call if you’re lost. But he graciously accompanies us to our dinner booking and explains how we should get back to the riad. We leave invisible bread crumbs along the way – kebab shop, sweets stall, bakery etc. 

After a long meal, at 11:30 pm, the souks have closed, the streets look very different, and our bread crumbs have obviously gone to bed. It takes two wrong turns and much poring over the map before we find our way back. Our sense of adventure is fully piqued. 

Inside, the restored riad is palatial, with courtyards, heated pool, tiled terraces and stylish artwork. Breakfast is whenever you want, and wherever, says the charming Afaf. 

Shall we move in permanently, we wonder.

It’s Halloween time in Beacon Hill in Boston. After much consideration, I decide that I am too old to collect candy from my generous neighbors.

So I pick up my camera instead and wander through Boston’s most historic neighborhood to celebrate its annual Halloween tradition.
