This 3-hour photography experience takes place on the periphery of Valparaíso in the Playa Ancha district. This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Faro Old Town, nestled in the capital of Portugal's Algarve region, stands as a testament to a rich and varied history. This enchanting historic area, characterized by cobbled streets and a remarkable medieval cathedral, offers visitors a unique glimpse into the past. Here are the top highlights:

1. The Faro Cathedral, or Sé de Faro, is an architectural marvel originally built in the 13th century. It has since seen Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque influences, evident in its diverse structural elements. Inside, the cathedral impresses with its ornate gilded woodwork, azulejos, and a notable organ with intricate wood carvings. The cathedral also features a climbable tower providing panoramic views of the Old Town.

2. The Old Town's narrow, winding streets are a highlight in themselves. Lined with historic buildings, these alleys offer a serene walk through time, with each turn revealing aspects of Faro's Roman, Moorish, and Christian heritage.

The colorful tiny houses and murals around this little but warming town, are the top ingredient to complete your joy while walking throughout the passages and sharing stories with the locals around!

Orgosolo, a picturesque village in the heart of Sardinia’s Barbagia region, is renowned for its unique blend of history, culture, and artistry. Once known for its rugged and rebellious reputation, Orgosolo has transformed into an open-air art gallery, famous for its politically charged and socially conscious murals. Surrounded by stunning mountainous landscapes, this village offers visitors a chance to explore Sardinia’s deep traditions and vibrant contemporary spirit. 
1. The murals are the village’s most striking feature, with over 150 vivid paintings adorning walls, depicting themes of politics, social justice, and daily life. These works, which began in the 1960s, reflect both local struggles and global events. 
2. Orgosolo’s traditional culture remains strong, with festivals, Sardinian music, and local crafts offering an authentic glimpse into the region’s heritage.

Ortaköy, one of Istanbul’s most picturesque neighborhoods, is a lively hub of culture, history, and stunning waterfront views. Nestled along the Bosphorus under the shadow of the Bosphorus Bridge, this charming district offers a delightful mix of historic architecture, bustling markets, and vibrant street life. Its relaxed atmosphere and iconic sights make Ortaköy a must-visit destination for travelers.

1. Ortaköy Mosque: Admire the exquisite Neo-Baroque architecture of this 19th-century gem, officially known as the Büyük Mecidiye Mosque. Its ornate interior and waterfront location provide one of the city’s most iconic photo opportunities.
2. Weekend Street Market: Stroll through the lively weekend market, where local artisans and vendors sell handmade jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and unique crafts—perfect for finding one-of-a-kind souvenirs.
3. Kumpir Heaven: Indulge in Ortaköy’s famous street food, kumpir—a baked potato loaded with a variety of toppings, from cheese and olives to pickles and salads. It’s a delicious snack to enjoy by the water.

Visitor Tip: Visit early in the morning to enjoy the mosque and waterfront without crowds, or come in the evening for the lively market and beautifully illuminated Bosphorus Bridge. Don’t forget your camera for those postcard-perfect shots!

Ortaköy Neighborhood

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

Outside the western walls of Dubrovnik, Lovrijenac Fortress, often referred to as Dubrovnik's Gibraltar, is a symbol of resistance and strength. This historic fortress offers a strategic vantage point with breathtaking views of the Old Town and the Adriatic Sea. Known for its dramatic appearances in films and TV shows, including the famed "Game of Thrones," Lovrijenac provides a unique blend of real and reel life. Why visit:
 
1: Explore Lovrijenac by admiring its impressive architectural design and strategic location. Built atop a 37-meter-high rock, the fortress was crucial in defending Dubrovnik from maritime threats, showcasing the city's ingenuity in fortification and military architecture.
 
2: The fortress offers stunning views of Dubrovnik’s Old Town and the Adriatic Sea. From its ramparts, you can capture the city's beauty and its relationship with the sea, making it a favorite spot for photographers.
 
3: Lovrijenac has gained international fame as a filming location for "Game of Thrones," where it was transformed into the Red Keep. Fans of the series will enjoy walking in the footsteps of their favorite characters, while others will appreciate the fortress's role in bringing Dubrovnik’s heritage to a global audience.
 
4: Delve into the fortress's past, learning about its role in protecting Dubrovnik’s independence and prosperity. The inscription above its entrance, "Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro" (Freedom is not sold for all the gold in the world), speaks volumes about the city's spirit and values.
 
5: Lovrijenac also serves as a unique venue for cultural events, most notably the Dubrovnik Summer Festival. Attending a theatrical performance or concert here, under the stars, is an unforgettable experience.

Visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat + crowds.

Dramatic: Lovrijenac Fortress

The Triana neighborhood in Seville is a vibrant and culturally rich district that feels like a city within a city. Located across the Guadalquivir River, just a short walk from the historic center, Triana has long been known for its strong ties to Seville’s ceramic artistry and flamenco culture. Strolling through its colorful streets, you’ll discover centuries-old pottery traditions, lively taverns, and a deep sense of community that makes it one of the most authentic parts of Seville.

Highlights of Exploring Triana:

1. Calle San Jorge and Ceramic Shops: Triana is renowned for its ceramics, with a history that dates back to Roman times. Visit the Centro Cerámica Triana, a museum that showcases the art of traditional pottery, or explore the many small ceramic shops where you can find beautifully crafted tiles and pottery—perfect for a unique souvenir.

2. Calle Betis and Riverside Views: One of the most picturesque streets in Triana, Calle Betis, runs along the riverbank and offers spectacular views of Seville’s skyline, including the Torre del Oro and the cathedral. This street is ideal for a leisurely walk, with its colorful facades and lively atmosphere.

3. Flamenco Culture: Triana is the birthplace of many famous flamenco dancers and musicians. Visit Casa La Anselma or other traditional tablaos (flamenco venues) for an unforgettable night of passionate, live flamenco performances in an intimate setting.

4. Local Taverns and Tapas: End your exploration with a visit to one of Triana’s many authentic taverns, such as Bar Las Golondrinas or Taberna Sol y Sombra. Savor local specialties like grilled Iberian pork, fried fish, and the ever-popular salmorejo.

Tip: Visit in the evening when the neighborhood truly comes alive, with flamenco spilling into the streets and locals gathering at taverns for tapas and drinks.

Explore Triana Neighborhood

Antelope Canyon may be the most famous of Utah’s slot canyons,  but if you want to avoid the large crowds, go to Buckskin Gulch - harder to reach but possibly, more enjoyable.

Wire Pass, a gorge carved through the Cockscomb by Coyote Wash, is the most popular entry route into Buckskin Gulch. It takes 1.7 miles to get to the slot canyon from the trailhead. Wire Pass is short, less than half a mile, but its slot canyon is even more confined than Buckskin, and makes for spectacular photos.

Buckskin Gulch twists its way for another 13 surreal miles, but we turn back after a couple of miles to head back to the trailhead. We’ve stopped every few feet to capture various angles of the rock and light - and literally run out of time. You could certainly do a wonderful all-day hike here.
