This is a day-long journey into the trade life of Istanbul—told through its markets, caravan inns, and shared meals. This walking tour crosses from the old merchant quarters of the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar to the everyday rhythms of Kadıköy, weaving through Ottoman courtyards, the "hans", and backstreet cafés along the way. You’ll visit a working caravanserai, meet a craftsperson keeping old trades alive, see rare views of the city from various points, and sit down to the same dishes traders still eat today—sour soups, lentil köfte, helva, mussels, meze. You’ll walk through wholesale alleys behind the Spice Bazaar and visit the Süleymaniye complex—once a spiritual and logistical nerve center of the empire. Then you’ll cross the Bosphorus by ferry, stepping into the present-day hum of market life on the Asian side. Enter the Spice Bazaar, still thick with scent and sound since 1660. Climb toward one of Istanbul’s architectural high points—Süleymaniye Mosque, designed by imperial architect Mimar Sinan in the 16th century. This was once a civic hub. Visit the former caravanserai, the soup kitchen (imaret) that fed the poor, and the medical clinic (darüşşifa) that served travelers and locals alike. As you move through the complex, you’ll see how Ottoman ideals of charity, urban planning, and commerce were woven together. Pause in the courtyard to take in panoramic views of the Golden Horn, then, if time allows, sit for helva and tea at a nearby terrace café still frequented by porters and theology students.

Süleymaniye is a beautiful site. The route will stay in the courtyard and grounds and the include the incredible views. Your guide will explain how this is also a working model of Ottoman urban design. Part II : Engaging (45-60 minutes)
Be guided alongside with a curator through the presentation of the gallery and the current exhibitions, introducing the artists and explaining their works, techniques and messages, while answering any questions you might have about artistic, cultural and historical matters. Depending on the programme occurring at the time of your visit, you might be able to discover every corner of the gallery, the two two-storey buildings, their apartments converted into exhibition spaces and the hangar. Essaouira is visually rich. For centuries, its economy centered on murex, a sea snail that produced a deep purple-blue dye. Today, that color still coats the boats, shutters, and doors that define the city’s palette. It's a natural setting for black and white photography—where contrast, texture, and light take the lead.

The walk includes a visit to Zack’s small, charming atelier, where his black and white prints hang beside books and journals that shaped his work. While the session focuses on black and white photography, Zack is happy to guide you if you prefer to shoot in color—using digital or film.

This experience is about learning to see differently. Zack guides you to focus on light, shape, and timing, rather than technicalities or gear. His black and white approach suits Essaouira, where the textures of stone, sea and shadow carry the story.

The route covers some of the city's most photogenic areas—archways, fishing docks, carved doors, and open courtyards. You'll capture scenes that reflect Essaouira’s past and present: street vendors, old facades, the pause before a gesture. The variety is broad—architecture, street life, seascapes—but the pace stays slow and observational.

This is also a personal process. You’ll explore what draws your eye, what holds your attention, and how photography can be used not just to record, but to understand. It’s suited to anyone with curiosity—no technical skills required. What you take home isn’t just images, but a sharper way of looking. This walk begins at Piazza Navona and moves through some of Rome’s most atmospheric backstreets. You’ll pass through winding alleys where the city’s layers come alive—ancient pathways, tucked-away courtyards, and places that feel both unexpected and strangely familiar.

Highlights include the widest alley, the steepest slope, and the narrowest passage in the historic center. Some alleys are so narrow they feel like corridors between buildings—unnamed, uneven, and often missing from standard navigation apps. The route includes streets with unusual names and corners shaped by archaeology, local lore, and centuries of lived history.

Leading the walk is Isabella, a licensed guide and art historian with deep roots in the city. Her focus isn’t on tourist landmarks but on spaces where time has settled quietly. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”

This itinerary reflects what Manila calls the “true essence of Catalonia” — a place of cultural pride, natural beauty, and distinct local identity. Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Whether through demonstrations or cultural festivals, they come together. They’re efficient and organized, but also keep that relaxed Mediterranean vibe. It’s a unique combination.”

Casa Batlló Magic Nights

A slow-paced night photo walk. On foot over odd shaped cobblestones. 

It does not start well as it starts raining even as we take a cab to Pantheon to meet our local photographer and lose a wallet in the cab. We miraculously get It back (another story) and we start our walk .. lethargic, in deference to summer, but still aware of art and life.

We walk from the Pantheon through Piazza Navona to Ponte Vittorio Emmanuel for views over to the Vatican.  The streets are wet, and Piazza Navona is teeming with Romans doing la passeggiata, an evening ritual I wish we could reapply in other cities. 

Later, joining the locals in their celebration of Summer along River Tiber (Lungo il Tivera Roma) well into midnight, it is easy to forget all about work and settle more definitively into a vacation frame-of-mind. 

Afterwards, a stroll to Campidoglio for priceless views of the illuminated Roman Forum, seems like just the thing to do.

To Rome, With Love

Naples, Italy, is home to Spaccanapoli, the city’s most famous and historic street that slices through the heart of the ancient center. This narrow, bustling thoroughfare is more than just a road—it’s a journey through Naples’ rich history, culture, and daily life.
