Testaccio is a historic district in central Rome, which naturally developed into the city’s first working-class neighborhood after Rome became Italy’s capital in 1871. This walk explores its layered history, from the former slaughterhouse—now a center for arts and innovation—to the Monte dei Cocci, an artificial hill from the 1st century CE made of broken oil amphorae unloaded at the nearby Emporio river port.

In the same neighborhood stands the Non-Catholic Cemetery, final resting place of poets, writers, and political thinkers such as Keats, Shelley, Gramsci, Camilleri, and Corso. Testaccio is also where Maria Montessori first tested her educational method, where Gabriella Ferri sang of Roman life, and where Elsa Morante and Pier Paolo Pasolini found inspiration for their stories.

She was the first in Italy to publish a study on gentrification comparing her own neighborhood, Testaccio, with Astoria in New York. This is a walking tour that explores how Barcelona city planning is shaping the future of urban living. Although Barcelona is renowned for its historical architecture, it is certainly not a museum. The transformation of Barcelona into a ‘smart city’ is best exemplified in the 22@/Poblenou neighborhood. This area features urban landscaping, bold new civic structures and museums, and cutting-edge projects from top local and international architects, together forming a futuristic cityscape. Here, global issues such as conservation, sustainability, and the transition to a digital economy are being actively addressed.

We meet at the largest purpose-built design museum in the world and start our journey from there. The Poblenou / 22@ area is bustling with construction and pilot schemes that are shaping the 21st-century city. We spend nearly four amazing hours in the Sand River Circuit in the midst of a spectacular head of grunting wildebeest. Led by “collective intelligence”, these animals complete a 1000 mile loop over the course of a year, and most survive for several seasons of this tough journey! 

When we arrive in the Grumeti Reserves, further south, we find the last few hundred thousand or so wildebeest. Here they are extremely purposeful and move in a single-file. Perhaps they have realized that they are late and will miss out on all the new green grass in the northern plains. They kick up a storm of dust as they move forward with determination - though it is not unusual to see the whole herd running swiftly back if something ahead spooks them. 

It is here that we see the consequences of the ‘battle’ - injured animals or those too weary to complete the journey. This is sad to watch as they will soon become easy prey to the predators. 

Such is the ⭕️ of life.

One Million Wildebeest

Yves Saint Laurent gifted Jardin Majorelle to Marrakech, the city that adopted him and his partner in the 60s. They bought an electric-blue villa and its garden, preserved the vision of its original owner (landscape painter Jacques Majorelle), and opened it to the public. 

What makes this feel like a psychedelic mirage in the desert?

Hot pink bougainvillea bursting from terracotta planters. Architectural cacti in lemon-yellow planters. Bamboos growing against cobalt-blue walls. Colorful birds flitting through palm trees. Saint Laurent’s gorgeous collection of Moroccan art, that I totally covet. 

It also has a museum that features jewelry in a setting that our guide Khadija keeps referring to as “a dream”. A dark room with a star-spangled ceiling and low voltage spotlights shining on stunning jewelry sets.
