What is this?

This is a walking tour that explores how Barcelona city planning is shaping the future of urban living Although Barcelona is renowned for its historical architecture, it is certainly not a museum. The transformation of Barcelona into a ‘smart city’ is best exemplified in the 22@/Poblenou neighborhood. This area features urban landscaping, bold new civic structures and museums, and cutting-edge projects from top local and international architects, together forming a futuristic cityscape. Here, global issues such as conservation, sustainability, and the transition to a digital economy are being actively addressed. We meet at the largest purpose-built design museum in the world and start our journey from there. The Poblenou / 22@ area is bustling with construction and pilot schemes that are shaping the 21st-century city. This area is a fascinating mix of skyscrapers and more traditional buildings, all nestled within a district that is perfect for exploring on foot.

What makes this unique?

You will gain background information about this area and be able to contextualize the current developments within the historical and political landscape of the city. By understanding the historical background of Barcelona, travelers will gain a deeper appreciation of the city's significance in terms of urban planning. The developments occurring today are a continuation of the progress made in the past, starting with the renowned engineer Ildefons Cerdà, who created the city's unique square-shaped grid. The buildings in this area are a testament to commerce, education, shopping, culture, and design. A highlight of our tour is the visit to the largest building site in the city, as of now.
