Back at her studio, you’ll taste three distinct mezcals from Guerrero, each carefully selected by Andrea. As you sip, she shares the cultural context behind each variety — from the agave species to traditional distillation methods. You’ll learn how to “kiss” the mezcal, as Spanish speakers say — a slow, attentive tasting style that reveals each glass’s unique character. Each mezcal is paired with locally inspired bites, drawing on the Guerrero heritage Andrea brings to both her cooking and design, and curated to enhance and echo the complexity of the spirits.

Andrea is an anthropologist by training, Master Mezcalier by trade, and a singer. She has fifteen years of experience promoting Guerrero State's mezcal culture and traditions, an area not typically associated with mezcal, but with plenty of flavors that are a joy to discover.

Andrea's own work in mezcal emerged from an extensive family history, where numerous memories and experiences have been intrinsically linked to the enjoyment of this spirit, always accompanied by good food and music. Since 2010, Andrea has been an integral part of the new narrative being woven around mezcal from Guerrero, actively contributing to its recognition and appreciation both nationally and internationally. 

Andrea's knowledge encompasses not only the specific culture of Guerrero, but extends to the diverse traditions that exist throughout the length and breadth of Mexico. She is certified as a Master Mezcalier and as a Leader in Food and Beverage Sensory Evaluation.

This historical walk traces Thessaloniki’s development from antiquity through Byzantine and Ottoman periods, using its religious and civic architecture. You begin at Trigoniou Tower, along the northern walls, where the city’s layered geography is visible from above. Then you follow the line of Byzantine fortifications toward the Monastery of Vlatadon, traditionally linked to the presence of Saint Paul.

The route then descends into the historic city. You visit the small church of Hosios David, known for Christian mosaics, before passing the Ottoman Alatza Imaret and continuing to the Church of Saint Demetrios, Thessaloniki’s most important Byzantine monument. 

From there, the walk continues through the Roman Forum and the Rotunda, originally built as a Roman monument and later adapted for Christian worship. A short pause for coffee marks the transition from the upper city to the modern center. The walk goes past Arch of Galerius, Navarinou Square, and statue of Alexander the Great.

This experience focuses on Thessaloniki’s Jewish heritage, once one of the largest and most influential Jewish communities in Europe. For centuries, Jewish life shaped the city’s identity, with tens of thousands of residents forming a vital presence woven into civic, economic, and cultural life. This community was almost entirely eradicated during the Second World War, when more than 90 percent of Thessaloniki’s Jewish population was deported and murdered.

The absence left behind is still palpable and lives on in the city’s memory. Walking these streets, you encounter not only architecture, but the traces of a people whose presence defined Thessaloniki for centuries and whose disappearance altered the city permanently.

During the course of the route, you will take in a panoramic view of Puerto Madero, Corrientes Avenue, and its Obelisk from an exclusive rooftop perch. You will soak up 360-degree views of Florida Avenue and the beautiful domes of May Avenue from a 14-floor aerial viewpoint. You’ll spy the historically poignant Plaza de Mayo from the Cabildo balconies and gasp at the sight of Recoleta Cemetery view from two bird’s eye vantage points—one of which is restricted to the general public. Hosted by a professional photographer from Buenos Aires, this tango photography experience takes place in the vibrant neighborhood of La Boca. Playing out on the pedestrianized street of Caminito, you will meet two professional and award winning tango dancers before capturing incredible images of them performing to the backdrop of the colorful, mismatched tenement houses La Boca is famed for. Sporting full costume and make-up, the dancers are happy to answer any questions you have about this art form. 

The experience starts over a cup of coffee in a cafe where Bernardo will discuss the best camera settings for capturing tango on the street. He will address compositional tips, focusing techniques, and working with moving subjects. This is an opportunity to ask any questions and get to grips with the functionality of your camera or device (smartphones are welcome). As the activity progresses, he will continue to impart knowledge and mentor you throughout.

If you’re the kind of traveler who feels shy about photographing people on the street, then this experience takes care of that. Hosted by a professional Porteño photographer whose work appears in publications all over the world, you will partake in a private photography session with two tango dancers in La Boca. This dancing duo will be dressed in full costume and make-up and you will have the opportunity to chat before and during the experience—providing a rare access moment to learn about this art form from those who practice it and take a closer look at the fashion.The setting itself couldn't be more appropriate. After all, La Boca is one of the barrios of Buenos Aires where tango found its feet in the 19th century. 

Bernardo will art direct the shoot, indicating where and how the dancers should pose while at the same time assisting you with your camera settings and composition. All you need to worry about is taking compelling photos and feeling the rhythm!

For most visitors, the Algarve conjures images of beaches and seafood. But João’s Algarve is more textured—what he calls the “poetic Algarve.” He cites writers like Sofia de Melo Breyner Andresen and José Saramago, who captured the soul of the region in images of sunsets, fruit, wind, and silence. For João, the true essence of the Algarve lies in its sensory landscape and the stories attached to it.
“In my youth,” he recalls, “many people came here, to the Algarve, and my family—like many others—had small farms. I spent a lot of time working on these farms growing carob, figs, almonds, and olives.” These daily rituals shaped his relationship to the land. “Everybody knows the Algarve for its oranges,” he adds, 
remembering his family’s orchard. “I have good memories of my mother and my sister making lots of cakes—almond cakes, and sometimes orange cakes too.”
What João wants travelers to experience is that same connection: the gestures and flavors that tie people to place. “We still recognize these things—the tradition of fishing, the dry fruits, the rituals of picking and preparing. This is what I want travelers to connect with.”
Still, he knows it's not always simple. “The Algarve is quite diverse. It’s not just one story. A good connection to the people here is important. When asked about his love for Lisbon, Tiago’s enthusiasm is immediate: “I love my city! I really love the historic center of Lisbon!” Though he didn’t always feel that way. Growing up on the city’s outskirts, it wasn’t until returning after time abroad that he saw it anew. “It was as a young and independent adult with an arts and architecture degree, and with the enthusiasm to explore — that I realized how beautiful, diverse, and interesting my city is.”
For Tiago, connecting with a culture means full immersion. “You have to experience it with open eyes, heart, and mind,” he says. That means talking to locals, walking unfamiliar routes, listening more than looking. “Lisbon isn’t just to be seen, but touched, smelled, and tasted.” It’s not a checklist—it’s a presence.
He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. It cannot—and should not—be rushed.” Second, mass tourism threatens the local character he cherishes. Responsible travel, he says, is essential to preserve the culture.
As tourism evolves, Tiago points toward Lisbon’s under-known strengths. “Gastronomy, street art, tiles, contemporary architecture… there’s so much more to discover!”

Picasso Museum Barcelona

In Santorini, we discover and fall in love with Vinsanto, the local dessert wine. So we drive up to Hatzidakis - a charming and intimate local winery - to check out the local grapes. The vines grow low to the ground and close to the road and we almost drive into them while looking for parking. 

The grapes are grown in an unusual way, not in arbors but low to the ground, in baskets made of vine stalks themselves. They are organic and are watered mostly by dew as the island has low water supply.

The tasting room is cave-like and we take home several bottkes of the small batch Vinsanto they produce.

The charming, well-preserved streetscapes of the heritage town in Old Lijiang Is perfect for getting lost  The winding streets lure you in - and shops selling Tiquanyin tea, handmade paper, musical drums, souvenirs and food vie for the attention of tourists. 

The Naxi people of Lijiang are proud, artistic and musically talented. It's a matriarchal society, one that I relate well to, and I enjoyed my interactions with the wise women I meet.

In the market square in Lijiang Old Town, groups of Naxi women get together to perform a few dances. There is no clear structure for their activity, and the women seem to be on their own schedule - some leave after a couple of dances, others hang around. Besides their traditional costume, what is common among them is their energy and zest for life.

Lost in Old Lijiang

A road trip through Spain is literally the best option for those looking for a local, less touristic experience. You can basically rent a car anywhere you want – we started in Barcelona, heading down the coast, and taking stops in Ebro Delta and Denia and other sleepy beach towns down the road. One of our highlights was the Spanish town of Cartagena – a historical hub with beautiful angled roads, traditional culture to explore (expect to be invited to some Cerveza by the locals), and history lessons about Phoenician traders, Roman soldiers, and Christian Reconquistas. If you have some days left, visiting Andalusia is a must. It's by far the most beautiful region in Spain and is known for its majestic horse breed, pristine beaches, hot weather, and super friendly culture.

My sister and I flew into Las Vegas to then see the Grand Canyon. We woke early to get picked up at our hotel and the tour took us to the Hoover Dam, a stop on Route 66 (where the Cars movie took place), and finally the Grand Canyon. We did an easy hike but it took about 4 hours. We stopped multiple times for pictures. It was amazing. The pictures don’t do it justice. 

My sister and I wish we had spent more time there and maybe hiking a different trail.

Hawaii’s Big Island has a lot to offer, including the view from the Southern most point in all of the United States. Unfortunately, there is no real marker for the location. The waters are gorgeous and there is a place to jump in from a height.

The Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, a mesmerizing protected coastal lagoon in Portugal’s Algarve region, is one of the country’s richest natural habitats. Parque Natural da Ria Formosa

The Milano Duomo

Faroe Islands

None of my map apps seem to work. After years of relying on a mechanical voice to navigate me in strange lands, I am back to poring over paper and asking for directions. I actually like driving here! 

Except when negotiating a one-lane tunnel. Then I am terrified! Unless I have right of way, I have to duck in - at just the right moment - into one of the spaces marked M, and stay there till the dark tunnel ahead is clear of oncoming headlights. This game needs nerves of steel! There are two such tunnels to get to Gásadalur, the waterfall that tumbles recklessly into the ocean.

The best photos require descending down the cliff to the beach below. There is a helpful set of concrete steps, and a big signboard in Faroese that can only be a warning, since it has a lot of exclamation marks. 

I hold on for dear life to the wobbly rusted handrail and descend half way before I realize that the rail isn’t connected to the cliff wall! The view, however, is just perfect.

Tumbling Recklessly

Portugal’s Elvas Fortifications, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, form one of the largest and best-preserved defensive complexes in Europe. Located near the Spanish border in the Alentejo region, Elvas played a crucial role in Portugal’s military history, particularly during the Restoration War (1640–1668). The star-shaped fortresses, massive city walls, and underground tunnels showcase the brilliance of 17th-century military engineering, making Elvas a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and photographers alike.

1. Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça, an imposing hilltop fortress, offers breathtaking panoramic views and a fascinating history as a former prison and military outpost.

2. Forte de Santa Luzia, another well-preserved star-shaped fort, features an underground passage connecting it to the city, once used for secret troop movements.

4. The Amoreira Aqueduct, a stunning 16th-century structure with 843 arches, was built to provide water to the fortified city and remains one of the region’s most impressive sights.

5. Historic center of Elvas, with its charming whitewashed houses, cobblestone streets, and landmarks like the Elvas Cathedral and Military Museum, offers a glimpse into the town’s rich past.

Visitor Tip: Visit at sunset for the best lighting over the fortresses and surrounding countryside. Wear comfortable shoes, as exploring the fortifications involves walking over uneven terrain.
