You'll gather at the table for an engaging introduction to the origins of mate and the legends tied to it, followed by hands-on guidance in preparing the infusion the Argentine way. Pronounced mah-tay, it’s rare to see a Porteño without this caffeinated herbal drink of yerba mate leaves in hand. But mate is more than just a beverage — it’s emblematic of sharing, forming connections, and building community. You’ll learn the traditional preparation method, rooted in Indigenous customs, history and identity, and experience the ritual first-hand. The way mate is passed around in a group (even the order) follows unspoken rules rooted in respect and hospitality. All materials to prepare your own mate are included, with herbs and sweeteners available. You'll try hot mate and cold mate (tereré) alongside traditional Argentine biscuits and bread.
