This Spanish celebration for the Holy Week dates to the 16th century, and blends social gathering with deep religious devotion. Solemn Catholic processions wind through narrow streets, organized by around 70 of Seville's church brotherhoods, featuring floats adorned with intricate statues of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and scenes from the Passion of Christ known as misterios. In Seville, it was tradition to enjoy these festivities from privileged private balconies owned by local families, offering a splendid vantage point. A local Seville "ambassador" will provide insights into the traditions, history, and significance of Semana Santa. Immerse yourself in this captivating spectacle for about 90 minutes to observe one or two processions.

The Semana Santa processions have grand pasos, or floats, intricately depicting scenes from the Passion of Jesus Christ. Devoted costaleros, dressed in protective garments, practice year-round for the incredible task of carrying these floats through narrow streets. Some of these floats are over 300 years old, serving as a testament to the unwavering dedication of the locals. As you watch from the private balcony, you'll witness the costaleros in action, bearing the immense weight of the floats on their shoulders. Mexico

This is a rare opportunity to learn about the ancient cultural significance and rich history of candle making in an Indigenous Zapotec community. You'll experience the creative process of a master artisan who is at the heart of reviving this traditional art form in this community. 

You'll learn how these intricate works are made and even try your hand at beeswax flower making. A short overview of natural dyes used in their process will also be included, with a special focus on cochineal—once among the most valuable trade commodities for the Spanish, next only to silver and gold. You'll also discover how these candles have long played a key role in marriage proposals and other local traditions in this village.

Afterward, you'll visit the town church to see the ceremonial candles in situ, followed by a traditional lunch in another town that is famous for their giant tree, which is said to be the widest in the world. 

Maestra Viviana Alávez has been producing handmade candles for over 70 years. You’ll meet this inspiring woman, descended from a long line of artisans who have been creating custom works for more than three centuries. She and her family—spanning three generations—work with Mexican beeswax, natural dyes, and the same techniques their ancestors used.

No other community in Oaxaca incorporates the tradition of elaborate marriage proposals with candles like this pueblo. In speaking with Maestra Viviana, you’ll gain insight into the realities faced by women of her era in this community, hear about her challenges and triumphs, and understand how both the local culture and her own life have evolved. By supporting this artisan and her family, you’re also helping to preserve a living legacy.

This 2-hour walking tour explores the street art of Palermo Soho. The trendiest neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Palermo Soho is a both haven for street art and creativity and the epicenter of modern design. Walking around these cobblestone passages and dipping into independent boutiques and cafes is all part of a stay in the Argentine capital, which means that a rendezvous with these painted walls is a sure thing. Seeing them at Grace’s side lays bare the hidden stories of the murals and shares the stories of those who painted them—explaining the messages, motifs, and intentions of each installation. 

Grace also highlights the architectural identity of Palermo Soho and discusses the immigrants who were responsible for building much of the city and, without whom, these canvases and walls would not exist. Born in Buenos Aires, Grace lived 11 years in the USA and four years in Israel. In 2020, Grace created “The Power of Street Art”, an educational program on street art that she has presented in schools, cultural centers, and international platforms. In 2022, she volunteered at the Grenoble Street Art Fest (France), one of the most important urban art festivals in the world, connecting with street artists from Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Chile

Try your hand at making a "lucky" clay pig known as a Chanchito in the intimate studio of a local artist near Valparaíso. No prior experience is necessary and this 1.5-hour crafting experience is perfect for children and adults of all ages. 

Chanchitos are three-legged pigs which are typically made in the village of Pomaire in Chile. This art experience uses a special type of clay which is easy to work with and dries quickly, meaning the finished Chanchito is ready to take away on the day. Over the course of the workshop, you will hear the history of the Chanchito and their significance in Chile. 

You'll also enjoy an inspirational view of the Pacific Ocean from Marcela's private terrace while enjoying soft refreshments and local pastries. If you're lucky, you may even get to sample "pancito amasado" bread baked by Marcela's father, a retired lighthouse keeper.

This fun pottery activity is relaxed and accessible to novice sculptors and potters of all ages. The finished Chanchito is small enough to slip into even the smallest bag and may be kept for yourself or gifted to a loved one back home to bring them luck. While you work, Marcela will explain the history behind these three-legged pigs typically made in Pomaire. She will share further insight on the development of Chilean art and crafts from pre-Columbian times to the modern day as well as mythological stories. While in her studio, you can check out what she is currently working on and hear about her artistic achievements.

Marcela's studio is attached to her home above the Higuerillas fishing hamlet in Concon, a short drive from Viña del Mar or Valparaíso. This area is often skipped by international tourists which means you get to experience a truly local community. To conclude your trip to Concon, Marcela will recommend local seafood restaurants in the "Gastronomic Capital of Chile".

Marcela Rodriguez is a contemporary multi-media artist who grew up living in lighthouses with her lighthouse-keeper father along the rugged Southern Chilean coast. The vast Patagonian landscape and turbulent Pacific Ocean greatly influenced her. While in college, she discovered street theatre and performed with two important Santiago theatre troupes.

In 1992, Marcela moved to Minneapolis in the US and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts and an MFA in painting and drawing. In 2001, she moved back to Chile and developed a passion for printmaking, focusing on lithography. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries throughout Chile, Mexico, Cuba, and the USA.

Marcela has completed two art residencies for printmakers, including a month-long one in Veracruz, Mexico, at La Ceiba Grafica in 2018 and with renowned artists from “Taller 99” in Santiago, 2019. She currently lives and works as a visual artist in Concon, Chile, and teaches at CasaPlan in Valparaíso.

Guided by Şeyma Çınar, a master artist with over 25 years of experience, you will gain insight into the historical significance of Tezhip before creating your own illuminated piece. This version of the workshop focuses on classical techniques, allowing you to appreciate the elegance of Tezhip in its purest form. Turkish tea and snacks accompany the experience, offering a warm and engaging environment.

Unlike longer academic courses, this Tezhip workshop is a compact yet immersive introduction to the art of illumination, allowing you to grasp the essence of this traditional art in just three hours. It is one of the few experiences of its kind that condenses a technique typically learned over weeks and months into an engaging appreciation session.
