Get out of the city of Bordeaux to spend the day in the countryside villages of the Gironde. You meet Anne in Langon and explore one of the best open-air markets along the banks of the Garonne River. At the market, you enjoy tastings guided by Anne, a chef who lives in the surrounding countryside, regularly shops here, and knows the producers and vendors personally. Together, you purchase a selection of products to share later for lunch.

After the market, Anne takes you to Bazas, the most important town between Bordeaux and Toulouse for nearly 2,000 years. Here, you walk through the village’s historic center, following Roman traces and learning about its links to Henry IV and Château Haut-Brion.

For lunch, you can choose to enjoy what you bought at the market with Anne as guests in a local hotel’s dining room, or sit at a restaurant on the cathedral square. After lunch, you have some time to continue exploring the village, before returning to Bordeaux.

This day is built around places that sit outside the usual visitor routes — working villages where the market still sets the rhythm. It is common to find yourself as the only international visitor, making the experience especially meaningful for travelers drawn to French life, history, and a quieter way of engaging with a place.

Bazas adds depth beyond “pretty streets.” Its cathedral — a UNESCO-listed site on the Routes of Santiago de Compostela — anchors the town’s status as a historic place of passage and authority. Anne Jordan, chef and guide with over thirteen years of experience, has lived in Bazas since the very moment she and her husband visited the village and decided to stay, a decade ago. She has cooked in private yachting and in Michelin restaurants in Paris before making her home in the French countryside.

Her training as a chef and her work as a guide shape the way she leads you through the flavors of the region around Bordeaux. San Mateo Almomoloa, located in the southwestern region of the State of Mexico, is home to one of the most distinct Nahuatl dialects still spoken today. Náhuatl is one of 68 indigenous languages in Mexico, and its speakers take great pride in sharing their ancestral knowledge and traditions.

During this full-day experience, you will travel by car from Mexico City to this community, where your adventure begins. Immerse yourself in the daily rhythms of local life, learning about agricultural practices and engaging in meaningful cultural exchanges. In an interactive language class led by a native Náhuatl speaker from the community, travelers will learn the basics of this ancient language. The class is designed to not only teach the language but also to provide an immersive understanding of the cultural significance behind the words and expressions used by the Náhuatl people. 

During your tour through the fields, your hosts will also point of wild plants still used today for their medicinal and flavorsome properties. This is part of their domestic conservation of traditional knowledge. In addition, guests will assist the community in removing litter from the fields and roadsides.

In the town, you will be hosted by Guillermina Ríos Palma, a speaker of the San Mateo Almomoloa dialect of Náhuatl. She has stood out for her dedication to preserving her native tongue. She has participated as a lead collaborator in linguistic documentation projectssuch as the Náhuatl Dialectology Project led by the National Institute of Indigenous Languages. She has also been active in compiling vocabulary to safeguard linguistic memory. Guillermina is an authentic and proud Indigenous woman who, along with her family, is always willing to share her lifestyle and the deep connection her community has with nature.

She studied Ancient Greek and Art History in Berlin, then returned to Rome to complete a Master’s degree focused on Renaissance art and restoration. For the past eight years, she has been guiding travelers through the city she knows intimately, blending history, art, and storytelling to reveal the layers of Rome most people miss.

Peru

This archaeologist-led experience takes you to two of Cusco’s most prominent sacred sites: Convent of Santa Catalina and Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun). Together, they help you see how Indigenous beliefs shaped Cusco’s spiritual landscape before colonization.

As you’ll learn, the area now occupied by Santa Catalina was once an acllawasi, “House of the Chosen Women.” This Inca institution housed women selected for their lineage and skills in ritual crafts such as weaving and ceremonial food preparation. It functioned as a communal and spiritual center, supporting practices tied to agriculture, astronomy, and the worship of the Sun.

Built in the 15th century, Qoricancha was the most important religious site in the Inca Empire. Dedicated to Inti, the sun god, its finely fitted stone walls were once sheathed with gold and silver plates. Delsi connects the dots between these two sites—one tied to a sacred institution, the other to state cosmology—and what they reveal about Cusco’s legacy.

Visiting Santa Catalina and Qoricancha with a local archaeologist offers a way to dig below the surface of Cusco’s sacred history through material evidence. Delsi brings depth to what these sites still hold: how the acllawasi functioned within Inca society and how its footprint survives within a later convent complex. At Qoricancha, you see the meeting point between Inca religious architecture and colonial rebuilding: precision of Inca masonry, logic of the original sacred enclosure, and how later structures were placed directly onto that base.

The broader historical context helps you understand how these sites fit into the larger narrative of Cusco and the Inca Empire, fostering awareness of the city’s layered history and the challenges of cultural heritage preservation. Delsi Espinoza is a local, fully licensed archaeologist from San Sebastian in Cusco. She has more than 15 years of experience working in the Cusco region on various official projects in a variety of locations. She has worked directly with the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, international organizations, local municipalities, and national parks, including Machu Picchu, Saqsaywaman, Pikillaqta, and Urubamba, amongst others. She has led excavation projects, maintenance programs, and education initiatives in the region since graduating as an archaeologist from the Universidad San Antonio Abad Cusco in 2014.

Visitors come for its quiet beauty, local craftsmanship, and the chance to wander through a village that still reflects centuries of rural life.

Capileira is known for its handmade woven textiles, or jarapas, produced in small family workshops that carry on an old Alpujarran craft tradition. The village and its surroundings are also sources of local cheeses, honey, and cured meats. This area forms part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its blend of cultural heritage and natural landscape. Bubión is unique for its serene atmosphere, traditional whitewashed homes, and its dramatic location between Capileira and Pampaneira, offering an authentic glimpse into Alpujarra life. Pampaneira is a lively, picture-perfect village in the Poqueira Valley, known for its whitewashed houses, flat slate roofs, and narrow stepped streets that reflect the area’s Berber heritage. Its artisan soul is everywhere: handwoven jarapas, ceramics, soaps, leather goods, and regional foods like honey, cheeses, and herbal teas fill small workshops and stalls.

You can wander shaded plazas, hear the water of ancient fountains—one famously tied to local love lore—and enjoy a coffee or simple regional dish on terraces overlooking the dramatic valley. With footpaths linking Pampaneira to Bubión and Capileira, it’s the place to take in the rhythm of daily life that defines the Alpujarra.

The Charming Soul of Lisbon

5 days in Lisbon with palaces, tiles, fado, markets and a day trip to the mountains and villages.

Iceland

This being a ‘chill trip’, we did not want to hike 10 hours on a glacier. Instead we trek on the Vatnajokull glacier looking for ice caves with wind on our face and ice under our feet.

Earlier, we woke up at 7 and drive in cold and windy January to Skaftafell National Park to meet Einar, our guide. 

This cave... like others ... started forming In August but you are never sure it will be stable to explore till later. In September, the loose ceiling collapsed  and this brilliant cave was formed.

These fragile and transitory structure require constant maintenance from falling rock and melting icicles. Einer enters the cave and spots a few boulders on the roof. He removes them to prevent harm to the cave and us. 

As we move around, the cave looks different as our viewing angle and the sunlight outside changes.

We are in complete awe ... and hungry. Luckily a steaming meal of lamb and potatoes is close by.

Ice Caving

The delta is clearly a fluke of nature, and the way to appreciate it best is from the air, especially in June and July when you can see the progress of the rain water flooding into the area and turning it into a lush paradise teeming with wildlife.
