Manila first arrived in Barcelona more than two decades ago, while finishing her studies in Rome. She needed an internship for her thesis and chose Barcelona without expecting how quickly she’d feel at home.“Barcelona, 22 years ago, was a different place,” she says. “It was less cosmopolitan, more local. I remember wandering through narrow streets and finding tiny bars with real flamenco. It felt genuinely lived in.”
 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. Jamaica

The Man Who Built the Coolest Bar in the World. That would be a Jamaican fisherman from Saint Elizabeth called Floyd who thought it would be nice to have a place where he and his buddies could hang out to and from their fishing ventures. He built the bar on a sandbar a mile off the coast in Parottee Bay out of driftwood (the wood was restored after Hurricane Ivan in 2004). In between dips in the turquoise water, you can sip a Red Stripe, eat freshly grilled snapper and play dominoes. Or catch up with Floyd at the bar. Someday, I’d like to watch the sunset from there.

Cagliari’s Historic Center, the heart of Sardinia’s capital, is a vibrant blend of history, culture, and stunning views. 1. The wild Giara horses are the plateau’s most iconic residents. These small, hardy horses are believed to have lived here for centuries, making them a symbol of Sardinia’s untamed beauty.

Jake’s is a Jamaican treasure. In fact, where it’s located is actually called Treasure Beach. 

Getting there from Montego Bay Airport takes a full two and a half hours on rough country roads - more than three if you stop at the jerk chicken place as we did. We stayed in a colorful bohemian cottage on the sea and tasted our first Ackee and Codfish - Jamaica’s breakfast dish - here. 

The evenings are for crooning to live music - reggae or calypso — before falling asleep to the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks literally at your feet.

Late evening photo session at the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. Its 10,000 torii gates cast criss-crossing shadows into the night.

This Shinto shrine has a very mystical quality, especially when it’s pitch dark, with no people around. Perfect for long 20-second exposures to capture the light and the shadows. Or “light painting” with a flashlight. 

That’s me brandishing a lightsaber and painting with it  Now imagine this as a Star Wars location for a fight scene. 

In between sets of Torii Gates, there are family shrines which are even more special, complete with miniature Torii, candlesticks and kitsune.

2. Its ceramics collection is one of the most comprehensive in Europe, showcasing the evolution of Andalusian ceramic art—from traditional techniques to the cultural influences that shaped the craft. 
3. Exhibits explore intangible heritage, including traditional costumes, musical instruments, and agricultural practices, offering a vivid picture of Andalusian life and its deep connection to the land. 
4. The museum itself is an architectural masterpiece, with the Mudejar Pavilion’s intricate design, exposed brickwork, and decorative ceramics embodying the essence of the Neo-Mudejar style. 
5. Temporary exhibitions and activities bring Andalusia’s living traditions to life, with workshops and audiovisual displays that immerse visitors in the region’s ongoing cultural narrative.

Chile’s Piedras Rojas (Red Rocks) is a breathtaking natural wonder in the Atacama Desert, known for its striking red rock formations, turquoise lagoons, and dramatic Andean landscapes. Located at an altitude of over 4,000 meters (13,100 feet) near the Argentine border, this otherworldly destination offers some of the most vivid contrasts in color found in the region, making it a paradise for photographers and nature lovers alike.


1. The stunning red volcanic rocks, rich in iron oxide, create an intense contrast against the blue skies and aquamarine waters of the nearby salt flats.

2. Laguna Tuyajto and Salar de Aguas Calientes, two adjacent salt flats, offer a surreal, mirror-like effect with crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding Andes.

3. Panoramic views of the Andean volcanoes, including Cerro Medano and Cerro Caichinque, provide an unforgettable backdrop for landscape photography.
