Come and explore the history of Lima’s Pueblo Libre district through its food. This central area is where Peru’s independence from Spain took shape in the early 19th century, which led to its renaming from Magdalena Vieja to “Free Town.” Désirée will explain the events leading up to July 28, 1821, and how this part of Lima was first settled by pre-Columbian cultures. She will take you to Quinta de los Libertadores, which served as residence and political headquarters for independence leaders such as José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar, as well as to the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology, and History of Peru.

There’s a lot of history to absorb, which is why Désirée has designed this walking tour as a food odyssey. She will accompany you to a local market to taste juices, fruits, Andean breads, and to learn about medicinal herbs still used today. You’ll watch ceviche being prepared at the market before tasting it, and stop at a traditional tavern for pisco and local bites.

This historic district is one of the least visited in Lima, despite having staged some of Peru’s most important political moments. Pueblo Libre played a key role during the independence period, hosting leaders who shaped the new republic decades after the rebellion of Túpac Amaru II had challenged colonial rule. It was in this context that the motto “Firme y Feliz por la Unión” (Firm and Happy for the Union) emerged, reflecting early efforts to define national identity and cohesion after independence.

Désirée grew up in Pueblo Libre and sheds light on these moments of history through food. Beyond monuments, she introduces you to families who have run market stalls for decades. Experience the elegance of the Nani Bernardo Palace, designed by Architect Vittoria in 1550. Marvel at its harmonious aspect, enriched by a valuable hidden Venetian garden. Should Nani Bernardo be unavailable, the alternative stop is Ca' Rezzonico Palace, another marvel of Venetian architecture - or a similar equally stunning palace, specially selected by Lucia. 

This is a private palace that is accessible only by appointment and with the help of our connection with Lucia. 

Designed by Architect Vittoria, on commission from the Bernardo family, the Palace was built in 1550. 
Around 200 years ago, the current owner's ancestors added a new Italian garden to the palace, demolishing a series of houses on the side closest to the Grand Canal in the process and gave the Palazzo Nani Bernardo an entirely new, and harmonious aspect that is still evident today.

Another element is the really valuable back garden, very nice and extraordinarily extended in length, made during the eighteenth century. In case Nani Bernardo is booked out for a private event, we will replace this stop with Ca. Rezzonico Palace or an equally stunning palace.

This is one of the last remaining boatyards of Venice. Typically hard to access since it's a working facility and tours are not provided without prior notice. It's also essential to have someone local to interpret the workings of the place for you. [Note: There are times when the Squero is closed for maintenance. In these instances, Lucia will ensure that you see the Squero from the outside and explain the workings in the best possible way.]

 “Tourism has definitely changed things,” she admits. “Places like La Rambla are overcrowded. Many locals have been pushed out by the rise in tourist rentals. But Catalans are proud of their traditions. They’ve started resisting these changes to preserve the city’s character.” That character is what Manila has grown to love. “I chose Barcelona because I felt an immediate connection. The Mediterranean lifestyle, the weather, the proximity to mountains and sea — it feels like home but also stretches me outside my comfort zone.” She relishes the contrast to her native Sicily. “I can take a train and be skiing in the Pyrenees in just over an hour. Where else do you get that?”
What keeps her in Barcelona is the balance of tradition and openness. “The cuisine, the olive groves, the vineyards — they remind me of southern Italy, but they’re uniquely Catalan.” And the city’s connectivity has made it easy to stay rooted while maintaining close ties to Italy. She speaks with admiration about the people: “Catalans are proud, resilient, and united. They have a strong sense of identity and community. He also names two challenges: First, Lisbon’s historic neighborhoods are deeply distinct—each like its own mini-city. “Lisbon is multidimensional. We arrive by RIB boat from Longyearbyen, dressed in survival suits, across a choppy Arctic Sea, with puffins and seals for company.

Isfjord Radio on Cape Linné, is an abandoned strategic communications station, with a decidedly interesting past, now converted into a stylish expedition lodge. 

Nothing could have prepared me for the extreme sense of isolation and wilderness. 

Imagine sitting all alone at latitude 79 degrees north and watching polar bears prowling outside the kitchen window. Two days ago, that is exactly what the staff at Isfjord Radio did.  After all, Svalbard’s travel slogan reads: “3000 polar bears, 2500 humans”. 

Hiking into the middle of nowhere, or along the coast looking for 1500-kilo walruses, is done with licensed guides, a couple of mandatory rifles for protection and huskies for company. It is a beautiful, stark landscape, filled with mystery and a sense of the unknown. 

Which direction should we head? Anywhere you want to go, comes the reply.

Extreme Wilderness

Immerse yourself in Portugal’s culinary heritage with a hands-on Cataplana in Faro cooking class, where you’ll learn to craft one of the Algarve’s most cherished dishes. The cataplana is both a traditional dish and the name of the clam-shaped copper pan in which it’s prepared, with roots that trace back to Moorish influences in Portugal. This seafood-centered stew combines fresh shellfish, fish, aromatic herbs, and vegetables, cooked together in the cataplana pan to lock in flavors and create a beautifully layered dish.

These workshops aren’t just about cooking; they’re a chance to dive into the heart of Portuguese culture, connect with local traditions, and enjoy delicious flavors along the way.

Australia

The Great Barrier Reef is famous not only because it is the largest coral reef in the ocean, but also because it is the most beautiful one. For those who like snorkeling or diving, an unsurpassable underwater world opens up.

My highlight in Australia was definitely the day trip to the reef. From Cairns, we took the tourist boat out to sea. Since the water is relatively cold, you get a wetsuit and then have hours to discover the unique underwater world.

I saw sharks, turtles, huge colorful corals, man-sized fish, thousands of small schools of fish, a clam, rays, snails, and lots of underwater plants.

Remember that you are a trespasser in the underwater world, so be careful not to touch or destroy anything. Use organic sunscreen and always be respectful of your surroundings.

The world’s largest reef

Karaköy, one of Istanbul’s oldest port neighborhoods, has undergone a vibrant transformation, becoming a hub of creativity and modern culture while retaining its historic charm. Located near the Galata Bridge and along the Bosphorus, this district offers an eclectic mix of street art, trendy eateries, and boutique stores. Karaköy’s energy is contagious, making it an essential stop for anyone looking to experience Istanbul’s dynamic blend of old and new.

1. Street Art Wonderland: Stroll through the district to find walls adorned with bold, colorful murals and graffiti by local and international artists. Each piece adds a touch of modern flair to Karaköy’s historic streets.

Karaköy Neighborhood

Faroe Islands

I’m seduced by the untouched beauty and drama of the Faroe Islands. Driving into Tórshavn, I witness a rare Faroese sight.

The ocean is bright red. The beach is packed with onlookers. It’s a grindadráp, a pilot whale hunt. Heavily regulated, it’s being carried out with process perfected over millennia. A local couple points out their son to me, he is on one of the boats — “unless we send a boat, we won’t get our share of the whale meat.”

When a school of pilot whales is sighted, boats gather around and slowly drive them towards the chosen bay or beach, for it’s illegal to kill the whales in the open sea. This time, there are about two hundred of them. Every bit of them will be consumed or used — and none can be sold.

I’m shocked, outraged, fascinated, caught up in the excitement and terribly conflicted. As a traveler, I respect — and seek to understand — culture and tradition. And the Faroese are holding on to this one — as it symbolizes for them their relationship with the sea.

Culture Shock

Girona, Spain, is a historic city in Catalonia known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, colorful riverside houses, and ancient city walls. Blending Roman, Moorish, and Gothic influences, Girona offers a rich cultural experience, from its iconic cathedral to charming cobblestone alleys featured in films and TV shows like Game of Thrones. The city’s mix of history, vibrant food scene, and peaceful river views make it a must-visit destination for history buffs, photographers, and food lovers alike.

1. Girona Cathedral 
Famous for having the widest Gothic nave in the world, the cathedral offers stunning views of the city from its grand staircase and was featured in Game of Thrones as the Great Sept of Baelor.

2. The Old City Walls (Passeig de la Muralla)
Walk along the medieval walls for panoramic views of Girona’s rooftops, bell towers, and surrounding countryside.

3. The Jewish Quarter (El Call)
One of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe, with narrow stone alleys, hidden courtyards, and the Museum of Jewish History offering insight into Girona’s multicultural past.

4. Onyar River and Colorful Houses
The brightly painted houses along the Onyar River create one of Girona’s most iconic photo spots, especially when viewed from the Eiffel Bridge, designed by Gustave Eiffel himself.

5. Arab Baths (Banys Àrabs)
Visit the 12th-century Romanesque baths, inspired by ancient Roman and Moorish bathhouses, for a peaceful glimpse into Girona’s medieval past.

Visitor Tip: Visit in spring or fall to avoid crowds and enjoy pleasant weather. For food lovers, Girona is home to El Celler de Can Roca, one of the world’s best restaurants—reservations are essential months in advance!
