Chile

This full-day photography excursion takes you to two contrasting natural wonders in the Atacama Desert of Chile: the Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna) and Rainbow Valley (Valle del Arcoiris). It is hosted by Mirko, a professional photographer specializing in landscapes and wildlife and a licensed guide. Upon leaving San Pedro de Atacama, Mirko will pull over at one of his favorite viewpoints to appreciate the sunrise over the Andes mountain range. While sipping coffee and sharing a breakfast of marraqueta bread rolls, you'll warm up your photography skills for the day by shooting the soft morning light. 

You will then explore the ravines and dunes of Moon Valley, coming to understand how it earned its name. After lunch at a local restaurant in San Pedro de Atacama, you'll head to the Cordillera Domeyko to study the 3,000-year-old petroglyphs of Yerba Buenas before ending the day in the multi-colored Rainbow Valley.

Mirko has selected these two locations for their contrasts. The morning is spent exploring the salt mines, rugged amphitheaters, and sweeping dunes of Moon Valley where Mirko will explain the geological anomalies. By visiting early in the day, you're spared the inevitable afternoon crowds and have a more relaxed photographic experience. 

The afternoon takes place at two of the Atacama Desert's hidden treasures: Yerbas Buenas and Rainbow Valley. Yerbas Buenas (Hierbas Buenas) is an open-air exhibit of pre-Columbian rock carvings which provide insight into ancient Indigenous cultures. Mirko will explain the symbolism behind the petroglyphs and how these served as more than pretty pictures! In Rainbow Valley, the mountains are painted hues of red, green, white, yellow, and blue as a result of the oxidation of different mineral deposits over millions of years. You will arrive in time to catch the soft light of the waning sun. Lunch in town serves as a way to chat informally with Mirko.

Traditionally used to decorate manuscripts, textiles, and ceramics, Ebru has been cherished in Turkey since the Ottoman era, blending artistic expression with meditative practice.

Set in a tranquil Istanbul gallery, this hands-on session begins with an introduction to Ebru’s rich history and cultural significance. You’ll observe a live demonstration by a master artist, learning the techniques of working with fabric—how to prepare the base, control the pigments, and create balanced, flowing designs. Using natural earth pigments, you’ll craft a vibrant scarf, watching colors float, swirl, and settle into intricate shapes before being transferred onto fabric. By the end of the session, you’ll take home a unique wearable piece of Turkish heritage.

Unlike traditional paper marbling, this experience explores the delicate and complex process of marbling on fabric, a technique requiring precision, patience, and expert guidance. Textiles absorb pigments differently than paper, making the final result even more dynamic and unpredictable—each piece is truly one-of-a-kind. With over two decades of experience, Nesime has been leading workshops at her Galatart Ebru Workshop in Istanbul since 2009. Her passion for preserving Turkish marbling has led her to explore its many forms, from bookbinding to fabric design. She has perfected the intricate process of transferring Ebru onto textiles, creating wearable and decorative artworks that honor this historic craft. Through her engaging workshops, Nesime not only teaches technique but also shares the rich symbolism and meditative qualities of Ebru, ensuring that each participant leaves with a deeper appreciation for this living tradition.

Café Nicola's history as a literary and intellectual hub offers a glimpse into Lisbon's artistic past. With a mezcal educator as your guide, you’ll visit unique ancestral clay pot production facilities, and artisanal copper alembic distilleries. They are owned and operated by Zapotec families, one of the region’s most prominent Indigenous ethnolinguistic groups, with whom both Alvin and Randall have developed strong bonds of friendship over the years. Your hosts and the distillers (palenqueros) will make you feel right at home, whether at their distilleries or in their modest homesteads.

You’ll come to understand the mezcal production process, from agave growing and harvesting to fermenting and distilling. You’ll do this at a handful of family distilleries off the mass-production trail, where family members take a conscientious approach to mezcal production.

This is truly an in-depth exploration of the whole mezcal production process and agave culture. Your hosts will bring an anthropological perspective to the tour, meaning that not only will you enjoy expert tastings on mezcal and its varieties, but you will also come to a greater understanding of the cultural and social world that exists, inextricably, in the distilleries (palenques) of Oaxaca.

At a family palenque, you’ll learn every step of traditional mezcal production: agave reproduction, growth, and harvesting; roasting the carbohydrate-rich piñas in a sealed in-ground oven over firewood and river stones; hand-crushing the baked agave with a wooden mallet; fermenting in wooden or clay vessels; and finally, distilling in locally crafted clay pots.

You’ll gain a clear understanding of why traditional mezcal production is considered one of Mexico’s most sustainable industries, and why no two batches of agave distillate can ever be identical. At a second nearby palenque, you’ll meet a young, determined woman producer who has built and operates her own distillery — an exceptional accomplishment in a mezcal world still shaped by machismo. This visit offers rare insight into both technique and resilience.

Clay Pot Distillation

Lunch follows in San Baltazar Chichicapam, one of the earliest towns to champion “single-village” mezcal — its nuances shaped by the abundance of local agave species and subspecies. You’ll enjoy a meal at a small roadside eatery, either before or after visiting a traditional palenque where mezcal is produced using artisanal copper alembics.

By this point, you will likely have sampled upwards of 50 different agave distillates. Before returning to Oaxaca City, you’ll also learn about pulque, the pre-Hispanic fermented beverage. You’ll taste the fresh aguamiel (honey water) extracted that very morning from a mature agave, then sample pulque at various stages of fermentation as it transforms through contact with naturally occurring environmental bacteria.

Here, we are also usually, and very kindly, invited into the home of one of the distiller families, compadres of Alvin and Randall. Alvin Starkman and Randall Stockton are Government of Mexico-licensed to teach about the culture of mezcal and fermented beverages. Alvin’s academic background is in social anthropology while Randall’s is in philosophy, and over their years of learning about and sharing mezcal they have been able to apply their interests in culture in order to create mezcal tours which are rich in detail and context, and more culturally sensitive. They are both permanent residents of the City of Oaxaca, and while they are retired from their previous professional lives, agave distillates remain a full-time passion.

This 10-day Morocco journey begins and ends in Marrakesh, unfolding through coastal Essaouira and the High Atlas Mountains in between. From artistic neighborhoods and sensory rituals to ocean air and mountain trails, this itinerary invites you to see Morocco not just as a destination but as a series of living moments, each led by chefs, photographers, artisans, and storytellers.

You will take part in Sufi evenings, hands-on cooking, contemporary gallery visits, and village walks. DAYS 1-2 – MARRAKESH | Ease into the journey with Amanda’s Courtyard Kitchen, a warm welcome into Moroccan cooking set in a private home. Begin with a guided art tour and curator-led meet-up at Comptoir des Mines Galerie. Spend the afternoon in Gueliz, Marrakesh’s modern district, to visit the Yves Saint Laurent Museum and Jardin Majorelle, spaces that blend color, fashion, and legacy.

DAY 3 – MARRAKESH TO ESSAOUIRA | Begin the morning with A Thousand and One Crafts, a guided walk through the artisan medina of Marrakesh. After lunch, travel west through argan country toward the coast. Essaouira is directly west of Marrakesh, a 2.5 to 3 hour drive, a straight shot to the Atlantic. It offers a gentle and relaxed pause after the intensity of Marrakesh. Arrive before sunset and take in the sea breeze.
