Join a vibrant carnival buzzing with excitement! On Shrove Tuesday 9, February, the grand parade of the Carnevale of Tempio Pausania unfolds, culminating in the dramatic trial of Re Giorgio, accused of the city's woes. Thousands gather in the square as the float representing the king meets its fiery fate, marking the end of an exhilarating Carnevale.

After a traditional lunch, and led by local photographer Gianmario Pedroni, you'll cross streets filled with colorful guests—flag-wavers, majorettes, and musicians—each adding to the spectacle. Costumed performers dance energetically, their masks telling stories of tradition and playful anonymity.

Among the masks, you'll see the enigmatic Domino, a black cloaked mask exclusive to Tempio Pausania, used to tease friends or approach a long-desired love. You'll also meet the raucous “lu traicogghju”, echoing the carnival's wild past, and “lu linzolu cupaltatu”, a local mask created from a bedsheet.

This experience is very exclusive: Led by the official photographer of the event, Gianmario Pedroni, you will be able to access special areas closed to the public to see and photograph the parade up-close. As the son of a local float constructor, Gianmario shares insight into behind-the-scenes stories of the artisans and their work. Starting the tour at his studio allows you to see and hear the stories of his work. 

Shrove Tuesday in Tempio Pausania reaches its pinnacle with the dramatic trial of King Giorgio, culminating in the fiery end of his float. This captivating spectacle attracts thousands, seamlessly blending tradition and entertainment in a vibrant atmosphere.

This is an immersive Moroccan cooking experience in a family home in  Essaouira, guided by Latifa, a local expert with over 10 years of culinary expertise. Your journey begins with a visit to the bustling souks (markets) of the ancient medina, where you’ll choose the freshest ingredients—fragrant spices, halal meat, fish, and farm-fresh vegetables—needed to prepare your meal. Medieval village of Siurana

The Vasari Corridor, an elevated kilometer-long passageway, is a symbol of the Medici family's influence in Renaissance Florence. Commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici in 1565, this corridor connects the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace, offering a unique journey through Florence's history, art, and architecture. 1 - Designed by Giorgio Vasari, the corridor was constructed to allow the Medici family to move freely and safely between their residence in Palazzo Pitti and the government headquarters in Palazzo Vecchio. 2 - As you walk through the corridor, you are surrounded by an exquisite collection of artwork, mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries, including a unique collection of artists' self-portraits. 3 - The corridor has witnessed both tragic and triumphant moments in Florence's history. In 1993, a section of the corridor was heavily damaged by a terrorist attack commissioned by the Italian mafia, destroying several artworks. These damaged paintings have been pieced back together and displayed as a reminder of this dark chapter in the city's history​​.

4 - The section over Ponte Vecchio offers breathtaking views of the Arno River and the city. In 1939, Benito Mussolini ordered the enlargement of the corridor's windows for Adolf Hitler's visit, allowing an even more impressive vista. This panoramic view was reportedly so admired by Hitler that he ordered Ponte Vecchio to be spared from bombing during World War II​​.

5 - The corridor concludes with a view of the Church of Santa Felicita, where the Medici attended Holy Mass from a privileged vantage point.

Namibia

It’s a new day in Sossusvlei. And I am rising towards the sky, timed perfectly with the rising sun, in a wicker basket attached to a hot air balloon. It’s my first balloon ride!

The sand dunes of the Namib desert are taking their time turning orange in the glow of dawn. Our pilot tells us that in Namibia, the only time one can fly a balloon is the sunrise hour. She can’t steer the balloon but she can control the altitude, and depending on the wind channels at each altitude, choose her preferred “course”. 

It’s more peaceful than I imagined. The sound of quiet is unnerving, but no one in the gondola wants to break the peace. In fact, the only sound to be heard is the feverish clicking of cameras. I could get used to seeing the world from this perspective.

Originally built as Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum in 123 AD, it has transformed through the ages, serving as a fortress, papal residence, and prison. Smoke spewing volcano 🌋 that one can climb, tree blanketed mountains, pastel buildings, cobbled streets and quintessential garden courtyards with fountains give picture postcard views on every corner we turn.

The town Is made for walking with stone arches In bold colors, baroque architecture, churches from Spain and vibrant markets bursting with colorful woven garments like ponchos, hats & table cloth and handicrafts.

It’s the birthplace of chocolate 🍫 and there are several museums that teach how the Mayans made ‘the food of the gods’. Adjoining chocolate cafes serve decadent treats and chocolate liqueur.

The coffee ☕️ is divine too and apart from sampling the local shops, we visited a local plantation to learn about coffee making.

Antigua is one of our favorite Central American cities.

Jamaica

Jake’s is a Jamaican treasure. In fact, where it’s located is actually called Treasure Beach. 

Getting there from Montego Bay Airport takes a full two and a half hours on rough country roads - more than three if you stop at the jerk chicken place as we did. We stayed in a colorful bohemian cottage on the sea and tasted our first Ackee and Codfish - Jamaica’s breakfast dish - here. 

The evenings are for crooning to live music - reggae or calypso — before falling asleep to the sound of the waves breaking on the rocks literally at your feet.

Each evening, we wait for sunset to happen ... in fact the whole town stops whatever they are doing and gathers near the edges of the cliffs In Oia. 

It’s a ritual that we quickly make our own. We time our dinner, walks and activities so that we can get a prime seat to watch the performance. On the odd day that we miss it ... being on the wrong side of the caldera ... we feel we’ve missed a significant event in our day.
