What is this?
Celebrate the Douro’s harvest season in this fully immersive half-day experience that brings centuries‑old traditions to life. You'll step into the rhythm of the vindima — or grape harvest — hand‑picking grapes on steep, terraced vineyards as local workers do. Next, you'll wade into a stone lagar to press grapes barefoot, stomping to festive music and feeling the must rise beneath you — an authentic ritual that shaped Douro wine production for generations.
After freshening up, enjoy a regional lunch at the estate paired with wines from previous harvests. The morning concludes with a serene cruise aboard a traditional Rabelo boat, drifting past golden hills and leafy terraces. This is a chance to experience one of the region's most iconic cultural events away from the crowds.
THIS IS A SEASONAL EVENT AVAILABLE ONLY DURING DOURO'S HARVEST SEASON FROM MID-AUGUST TO END OF SEPTEMBER.
What makes this unique?
This is a rare opportunity to take part in one of the Douro’s most meaningful traditions — not as a spectator, but as a participant. With scissors in hand and feet in the press, you’ll join a working harvest, guided by winemakers who carry generations of knowledge. Few experiences offer this kind of hands-on access to grape picking and traditional treading, especially in such an intimate setting. The atmosphere is celebratory, with the rhythm of local songs adding spirit to the work.
Afterward, you’ll enjoy a relaxed lunch paired with estate wines — the direct result of efforts like your own. Thanks to Carlos and Paulo’s close ties with small producers, you’ll experience this seasonal ritual in its most genuine form, away from the crowds. It’s a chance to ask questions, connect with the land, and walk away with a deeper appreciation for the people behind the wine.
What is the profile of the host?
Carlos de Oliveira and Paulo Baptista bring heartfelt passion and local expertise to every step of this harvest experience. With lifelong ties to the Douro, they’ve grown up exploring these slopes and celebrating these rituals. Their personal connections with producers grant exclusive access to smaller estates and conversations with winemakers.
What to bring?
Comfortable, closed-toe shoes (you’ll walk in vineyards, but remove for treading), shorts, and a lightweight top you don't mind staining, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, reusable water bottle, towel or change of clothes for treading, camera or smartphone.
