What is this?

Discover the fascinating history of Funchal, Madeira’s capital, while learning the basics of photography on this photo walking tour through the heart of the city. The Portuguese island has long been a hub for photographers – in 1865, it welcomed Portugal’s first photography studio, now turned into a museum. Accompanied by a local photographer, you’ll begin facing the Atlantic at Funchal’s Marina, then wander through the Zona Velha, the city’s oldest district, home to the iconic Lavradores Market, where tropical fruit stalls, fishmongers, and flower vendors come together. The tour continues along the cathedral and the municipal garden with plenty of stops to take in the architecture and the island’s unique flora. Along the way, you’ll hear how Madeira has evolved from a sugarcane and wine producer to a therapeutic haven and modern holiday destination. The experience ends at a local café, offering a chance to unwind, review your images, and exchange thoughts on your favorite shots.

What makes this unique?

Many walking tours of Funchal cover the city’s historical landmarks, but few focus on photography. This experience does both: you’ll trace Funchal’s layered history while engaging with its present through the lens of your camera. The city has had a connection with photography since the mid-19th century, when its strategic location along the Atlantic brought in new technologies and artists with ships docking from Europe and beyond. Madeira became home to some of Portugal’s earliest professional studios — most notably the Vicente family atelier, active for over a century and now preserved as the Madeira Photography Museum. Beyond the museum, you’ll stop at popular landmarks, covering the city’s historic and artistic evolution. Marta, a local photographer, has spent endless hours walking through Funchal with her camera. She’ll show you her favorite spots, share techniques on composition and light, and help you frame Madeira’s capital through your eyes.

What is the profile of the host?

Fluent in both Polish and English, she brings a unique perspective—combining the curiosity of an outsider with the insight of someone who’s spent time exploring the city’s inner corners. She began by leading historical walking tours, guiding visitors through Funchal’s historical landmarks. Over time, she felt drawn to share her other passion for photography. Now, she brings both worlds together.
