What is this?
This one-of-a-kind private, 90-minute cooking class at the Sign Language Café in Marrakesh blends traditional Moroccan pastry-making with the fundamentals of sign language. Led by the café’s talented deaf chefs, the class guides you through preparing beloved Moroccan pastries like crepes and milk pastilla. As you bake, you’ll learn basic gestures in Moroccan Sign Language—enough to engage, communicate, and connect in meaningful ways with your hosts.
The session ends with a Moroccan tea ceremony on the terrace, where you’ll enjoy the sweets you’ve made in a peaceful setting. This experience is ideal for travelers looking to go beyond surface-level tourism—offering both a hands-on culinary lesson and a deeper window into Morocco’s local deaf community. It’s a rare opportunity to support a not-for-profit café that is staffed by deaf professionals, and to experience food as a shared language that transcends cultures and abilities.
What makes this unique?
This experience is private and takes place in a unique setting: the Sign Language Café—the only café in Marrakesh run by deaf professionals. Located within the Center for Language and Culture, a hub that serves more than 3,500 students from across Morocco, the café is a model of inclusion in a city where resources for the deaf community remain limited.
By joining this class, you’re not only learning how to make traditional Moroccan pastries—you’re contributing to a wider social mission. The experience is part of an initiative led by Amal, a women’s training center that has created meaningful opportunities for Moroccan women in the workplace. A portion of your payment directly supports this effort. The value of this experience goes beyond what’s on the plate; it’s about participating in a model of inclusive, community-driven hospitality.
You’ll discover that cooking becomes a shared language—one that bridges cultural and linguistic divides and welcomes guests into a welcoming space.
What is the profile of the host?
This experience is rooted in the mission of the Amal organization, founded by Nora Fitzgerald, which works to create pathways to employment for women in Morocco. After training several talented deaf women chefs through Amal’s culinary program, Nora and her team saw firsthand how difficult it was for them to find work—despite their skill, dedication, and passion. In response, Amal opened the Sign Language Café as a space not just for employment, but for visibility, pride, and meaningful inclusion.
Yasmine, the café’s manager, has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. Committed to community service and cultural exchange, she has helped shape the café into a space that is both welcoming and empowering. With her deep knowledge of Moroccan culture and her passion for the culinary arts, she offers guests an experience that is as warm and generous as it is eye-opening.
What to bring?
Wear comfortable clothing suitable for a kitchen setting, and feel free to bring a camera to capture the experience. No prior knowledge of sign language is required—just curiosity and openness to learn.
