What is this?

This immersive day trip to Cócorit, Sonora invites you to connect with the rich cultural traditions of the Yaqui people. Starting from Hermosillo, you’ll be picked up by bilingual, expert guides at your accommodation. The day begins with a visit to the Museo del Yaqui, where you’ll explore Yaqui history, the trauma of the deportation era, their cosmovision, and ethnobotanical knowledge. You’ll then walk the quiet, mural-lined streets of Cócorit, visit community spaces, and meet local artists preserving traditional crafts such as wood carving and embroidery. A highlight of the experience is a stop at the beloved Gela Bakery, known throughout the region for its warm, flaky guava empanadas. After a full day of exploration, your guides will bring you back to your accommodation in Hermosillo. This cross-cultural day trip includes transportation, meals, and cultural guidance — offering a full-sensory journey into the heart of Sonora’s Yaqui heritage.

What makes this unique?

This tour offers direct engagement with Yaqui people — their traditions, perspectives, and living spaces. With Q&A, open dialogue and optional hands-on participation — it’s a meaningful exchange rooted in learning, connection and respect for one of Sonora’s most enduring Indigenous communities. You’ll explore Indigenous cosmovision, visit artisan workshops to observe or try embroidery and carving, and spend time in community spaces where daily life unfolds. These aren’t performances — they’re real, lived experiences. You’ll also learn about the Yaqui's ongoing efforts to preserve their language and land, and pass down traditions to future generations. Your hosts are native to the borderland region and committed to breaking stereotypes through thoughtful, place-based learning. Their bilingual guidance ensures both safety and depth, helping you navigate local customs, stories and knowledge with care. This is an immersion into living heritage — offered with humility, warmth and insight.

What is the profile of the host?

Alex and Rocío have been running tours along the U.S.–Mexico borderlands for many years, primarily as a way to share positive, accurate information about the region they call home. Beginning in 2019 with efforts to disseminate local history, they soon expanded to offering tours and experiences that connect visitors with communities on both sides of the border. Alex’s earliest memory is a family visit to Tijuana—an experience that sparked a lasting fascination with the people and heritage of Mexico. While at university, he focused his studies and research on the Hispanic cultural heritage of the American Southwest and Mexico. Rocío is a graphic designer who has managed communications projects for a range of institutions, including government agencies and nonprofits in both the U.S. and Mexico. She loves sharing the diversity and richness of the region through visual storytelling.
